Description
April 13, 1937. H. M. BARBER I WEB PERFECTING ROTARY PRESS Filed Aug. 10, 1935 INVENTOR. M M
ATTORNEYS invention.
w s Apr. 13, 1937 a UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE In high speed web perfecting rotary presses where quick drying inks and web heating and cooling units are employed, it is very desirable that the several units be so located with respect to each other as to produce the best results while occupying a minimum amount of space.
The object of my invention is to so locate the printing and combined heating and cooling units, the websupply roll and the delivery, that the web can be fed and printed and the inks In ends of the press, each printing unit consisting I of an impression cylinder and form cylinders '(in the present instance four form cylinders) arranged, in one unit around the upper side of their impression cylinder and. in the other unit around the under side of. their impression cylinder; inking mechanisms for the form cylinders; first .and second combined heating and cooling units located respectively above and below their printing units, each combined heating and cooling unit comprising a heating cylinder and one or more (in the present instance two) .cooling cylinders; and a web supply roll located beyond the first printing unit, means being provided for passing the web from the supply roll to. and 7 unit..then to and through the second printing.
unit, then to and through the second combined a heating and cooling unit, and finally directed in the desired direction, as for instance at right angles to said units. 1 r
' A practical embodiment of my invention isrepresented in the accompanying drawing, which represents a diagrammatic side elevation of my The'first printing unit is herein represented I as a four color unit, the impressioncylinder being denoted'by l and its four form cylinders by 2, 3, I, 5, which form cylinders are arranged around the upper side of the. impression cylinder.
The second printingunit for periecting the" web is herein represented as a four color unit, the impression cylinder being denoted by 8 and its form cylinders by 1, '8, 9, 'llirwhich form cylinders are arranged around the under side of the impression cylinder. The inking mecha-' nisms for the form cylinders are denoted by la,
inks to their respective form cylinders in the usual manner. 7
- These two printing units are located in line in substantially the same horizontal plane the required distance apart at opposite ends of the press. I
The first combined heating and cooling unit is herein represented as comprising a large heating cylin er H and two small cooling cylinders l2, It a nged between the heating cylinder and the impression cylinder I. This combined heating and'cooling unit is located in line withthe first printing unit and below the same.
The second combined heating and cooling unit is herein represented as comprising a large heating cylinder i4 and two small cooling cylinders l5, 16 arranged between the heating cylinder l4 and the impression cylinder 6. This combined heating and cooling unit is located in line with 20 the second printing unit and above the same.
The web supp y roll is denoted by I! and it is located beyond the first printing unit and in line with said unit. v 1
The web is led throughthe presses follows: 25 The unprinted web passes from the supply roll I! to and through the first printing unit where the web is printed in multicolor upon one side 1 thereof. The web is then led to and around the heating cylinder H and cooling cylinders l2, ll of the first combined heating and cooling unit.
l rom thence the web is led to and through the second printing unit where the web is printed on its other side. The perfected web is then led to and around the heatingcylinder II and cooling cylinders l5, IQ of the second combined heating and cooling unit.
The perfected web may then be directed from the second combined heating and cooling unit to a predetermined point, as, for instance, around 40 a turning bar It to a point at right angles to said units.
' The means for driving thejseveral units is not shown or. described herein. It is understood 4 5 that the first and second units-may be driven.
separately either for the purpose of making ready or for permitting a single or two separate non-perfected multicolor products to be produced. 50
-It will be understood that guide rolls are pro- 'videdfor passing the web in prescribed paths from the web supply roll 11. to the delivery- It will also be understoodthat any suitable heating medium, such as steam, may be supplied 5' to the heating cylinders H and I and that any suitable cooling medium, such as water, may be supplied to the cooling cylinders I2, I! and II, l6. It will alsobe understood that any well known or approved quick drying inks may be used in the printing units.
From the above description it will be seen that I have provided an arrangement orthe several units of the press whereby the inks on the freshly printed sides of the web may be thoroughly dried with a minimum travel of the web, the form cylinders of the two printing units at the same time being so positioned that ready access thereto may be obtained. What I claim is: v
1. In a web perfecting rotary press, first and second multicolor printing units located in substantially the same horizontal plane in line with each other.at opposite ends of the press, each printing unit comprising an impression cylinder and form cylinders arranged, in one unit around the upper side of their impression cylinder and in the other unit around the under side or their impression cylinder. first and second combined heating and cooling units located in one instance below its printing unit and in the other instance above its printing unit, each of said heating and cooling units comprising a heating cylinder and one or more cooling cylinders located between the heating cylinder and impression cylinder, a web supply roll, and means for leading the web through said units and directing the web in the desired direction.
2. In a web perfecting rotary press, first and second multicolor printing units located in substantially the same horizontal plane in line with each other at opposite ends of the press, each printing unit comprising an impression cylinder and form cylinders arranged, in one unit around the upper side of their impression cylinder and in the other unit around the under side of their impression cylinder, first and second combined heating and cooling units located in one instance below its printing unit and in the other instance above its printing unit, each of said heating and cooling units comprising a heating cylinder and one or more cooling cylinders located between the heating cylinder and impression cylinder, a web supply roll, and means for leading the web through said units and directing the web at right angles to the press.
