This invention relates to sanitary appliances and more particularly refers to improvements in combined water closets and bidets.

In a co-pending application for patent entitled Combined toilet and bidet, Serial No. 6,062 now Patent 2,036,934, I have described and claimed a bidet adapted to be used Ain combination with an ordinary water closet, the principal characteristic of said bidet being that it is so designed 10 that it affords ample room for the performance of the service for which it is intended.

To this end, the bidet is formed with a front portion preferably extending beyond the closet bowl and is also preferably wide enough to provide a generous amount of room, enabling the user to ei'liciently bathe the exposed part of the body.

However, when the bidet is used on top of the seat, in order to provide suicient depth for its front portion permitting the hand to be inserted in place without diiculty, it is necessary to have the top of the bidet well above the level of the seat so that in some instances the height of the bidet from the floor may cause some discomfort to the user.

In another co-pending application for patent entitled Bidet attachment for water closets, Serial No. 12,239 now Patent 2,035,985, I have described and claimed an improved arrangement of bidet and toilet seat, whereby the said seat and bidet be raised or lowered in position without interfering with each other. The seat forming part of said arrangement is open at the front end so that the frontwardly extending portion of the bidet can project within the opening of the seat down to the top of the toilet bowl, t-he result being that the bidet can be made to extend to a lower level above the level of the seat than if a seat of the closed front end type were used.

However, I have found that there are instances in practice where it is desirable for the top of the bidet to be at a still lower level than is made possible by the use of an open front end seat in connection with an ordinary toilet bowl. It is of course understood that the. level of the top of bidet over the level of the top of the toilet bowl is determined by the necessity of providing sufficient depth at the front end of the bidet for the free insertion of the users hand. In order to meet this condition, it is perforce necessary for the top. of the bidet to remain at a level which is sufficiently above the level of the ordinary toilet seat to make it inconvenient for children and short persons to use it with proper comfort.

I have therefore devised the arrangement forming the object of the present invention, the primary object of which is to provide in a combined water closet and bidet, a novel and improved type of closet bowl making it possible to reduce to a minimum the height which the bidet ,5 must reach above the level of the seat, without losing the advantages pertaining to the arrangement described in my second application above referred to.

Another object of the invention is to provide. a l0 novel and improved combined water closet and bidet, including a seat of the iront type, in which the closet bowl is formed at the front end with a depression registering with the opening at the front end of the seat, making it possible for 15 the front portion of the. bidet to project downwardly to a level materially lower than that of the top of the closet bowl.

A further object is to provide a novel and improved construction of combined water closet and 20 bidet, making it possible for the contour of the bidet itself to follow a relatively smooth curve free of sharply depressed portions, and therefore easier and less expensive to produce and more pleasing to the eye. 25

Other objects and advantages of my invention will more fully appear as the description proceeds and will be set forth and claimed in the appended claims.

My invention is illustrated by way of example 30 in the accompanying drawings in which:

Referring to Figs. 1, 2, 3, of the drawings, 2U designates a toilet bowl made integral with the usual rearwardly extending portion 2| and having a curved depression 22 at the front end i adapted to receive the front portion 23 of the bidet 24.

Said bidet consists of a basin-'like structure 15 which is pivotally mounted at the rear and can be moved from the position on top of toilet seat 25, as shown in full lines in Fig. 3, to the position 24 shown in dot and dash lines in the same figure.

As stated before, the seat is of the open front end type, and opening 26 at the front thereof remains directly above depression 22 so as to permit front extension 23 of the bidet to project therewithin.

25 By virtue of this arrangement it is possible to make the bidet sufficiently deep for eicient use and yet cause its outwardly extending flange portion 21 to remain but slightly above the level of the seat. As customary the seat is preferably provided with rubber cushioning buttons 28, and in a similar m-anner the underside of the flange portion of the bidet is provided with rubber cushioning buttons 29.

The bidet is preferably pivotally mounted coaxially with the seat, although pivotal supports on different axes can be used if desired.

By referring more especially to Fig. 3, it will be seen that the fact that the closet bowl is formed with a depression at the front permits `Aan easier merging of the curved bottom of the front portion of the bidet with the curved bottom of the body portion thereof than would otherwise be possible without making the body portion of bidet of an undesirably shallow depth.

The structure illustrated in the drawings differs from those shown in the drawings pertaining to my other copending application above referred to in several other respects.

A novel feature of the arrangement shown 0 resides in the manner of supplying water to 0 the bidet. As shown in Figs. 1 to 5, the seat,

In correspondence of each one of said inlets tubular member 35 is provided with an opening such as 4|, which registers With its respective inlet when the bidet is in its lowered position 75 ready for use and which is out of register when the bidet is moved to its raised position. bidet is provided with a rearwardly extending hollow bracket 42 having sleeve portion 43 firmly secured onto the central portion of tubular member 35, so that said tubular member shares the angular displacements of the bidet. Said tubular member is provided with an opening establishing a connection for the passage of liquid from the tubular member to the inside of the bracket.

As a result the tubular member 35 acts as a cock to admit or cut off the supply of water to the bidet, respectively, when said bidet is lowered in operative position or raised therefrom. In order to prevent leakages, the ends of tubular member 35 are preferably mounted Within their respective supports through the intermediary of a stuffing box arrangement constituted by nut 44 and packing 45. In addition to this, the water supply pipes are controlled by valves such as 46, 41, which are preferably placed Within easy reach of the user.

Water can be discharged into the bidet either through two discharge outlets located near the top of the bidet at the rear as shown at 48 in Figs. 10, l2, or else through a nozzle 49 upwardly extending from the bottom of the bidet, said nozzle being adapted to direct a jet of water against the exposed portion of the users body.

Suitable selective means are provided for supplying the water so as to fill the bidet or to issue from nozzle 49. By way of example in the drawings I show a multiple-Way valve interposed between tubular member 35 and the bidet, the body 50 of said valve forming part of bracket 42.

Said valve also includes a cock 5| rotatably mounted within the valve chamber 52, said cock being formed with an annular chamber 53 provided with two ports 54, 55, arranged at right angles to each other on the same plane and adapted to register with passage 56 connecting chamber 52 with tubular member 35.

Cock 5| is also provided with diametrically opposite ports 51, 58, adapted to establish communication between annular chamber 53 and tubular member 59 when the cock is in the position shown in Figs. 9, 10, 11, and adapted to establish communication between said annular chamber and passages 60, 6|, leading to outlets 48 when the cock is displaced 90 degrees in a clockwise direction with respect to Figs. 10, 11.

Tubular member 59, which is preferably concealed by a shield 62, runs under the bidet to a point where it can be connected to the elbow portion 63, by means of which the nozzle 49 is secured onto the bottom of the bidet. It will be observed that outlets 48 of the passages 69, 6|, lead to the inside of the bidet through offset portions such as shown at 64, which form with the body of the bidet an opening acting as an overflow.

After use the water is discharged from the bidet through bottom openings 66 arranged in circumferential series around nozzle 49, said openings leading to an underlying chamber 61 formed by a casing 68, thebottom of which is provided with discharge openings 69. Said openings 69 are controlled by a rotatable valve member 10 pivotally mounted at 1|, said valve member being provided with corresponding openings 12 adapted to register with openings 69 when the valve is in the discharging position, said openings 69 being blocked by the solid portions of the valve intervening between adjoining openings 12 when the valve is The turned 45 degrees from the position shown in Figs. 6, 8.

The valve may be operated by means of a control lever 13 having a stem I4 running through the core l5 of cock 5I. At its lower end stem 14 is provided with a pulley 15 or some other suitable means for connecting a cable 11 which runs within shield 62 and around valve member 10 with which it is in positive engagement as shown at 18 in Fig. 8. It is thus seen that by swinging lever 73 to one or the other of two extreme positions, Valve T! can be set in open or closed position at will.

Although I prefer to make the bidet in the form 15 shown in Figs, 1 and 3, where its front portion projects beyond the closet bowl, it is within the scope of my invention to have the front of the bidet extend about as far as the closet bowl and no more if desired, as shown at 19 in Fig. 13; this 20 manner of construction being preferable in such cases where there are space limitationsv that would interfere with the use of the longer type of bidet.

The constructional details of my invention may 2D vary from those shown without involving any material departure from the inventive idea. The drawings should, therefore, be understood as being intended for illustrative purposes only and not in a limiting sense.

I accordingly reserve the right to carry my invention into practice in all those ways and manners which may enter fairly into the scope of the appended claims.

I claim:

l. As a new article of manufacture, a water closet bowl comprising a basin like structure having the upper part of its front wall portion cut off to form a depression centrally located with respect to the longitudinal axis of said bowl.

A combined water closet and bidet comprising a water closet bowl having the upper part of its front wall portion cut oil to form a depression centrally located with respect to the longitudinal axis of said bowl, and a bidet supported on top of 40 said bowl, having a front portion downwardly extending within the depression at the front end oi' said bowl, said bidet being pivotally mounted onto said bowl.

3. A combined water closet and bidet compris- '00 ing a water closet bowl having the upper part of its front wall portion cut olf to form a depression centrally located with respect to the longitudinal axis of said bowl, a seat resting on top of said bowl, having an open front end forming a gap in correspondence of said depression, and a bidet supported on top of said seat, having a front portion downwardly extending through said gap and within said depression, said seat and bidet being pivotally mounted onto said bowl, and being tiltable to operative or inoperative position independently of each other.

4. A combined water closet and bidet comprising a water closet bowl having the upper part of. its front wall portion cut off to form a depression centrally located with respect to the longitudinal axis of said bowl, a seat resting on top of said bowl, having an open front end forming a gap in correspondence of said depression, and a bidet supported on top of said seat, having a front portion downwardly extending through said gap and within said depression, said seat and bidet being pivotally mounted onto said bowl, and being tiltable to operative or inoperative position independently of each other, said front portion extending frontwardly beyond said front end.

5. A combined water closet and bidet comprising a water closet bowl having the upper part of its front wall portion out oir to form a depression centrally located with respect to the longitudinal axis of said bowl, a seat resting on top of said bowl, having an open front end forming a gap in correspondence of said depression, a bidet supported on top of said seat, having a front portion downwardly extending through said gap and within said depression, and a cover for said bidet, said seat, bidet and cover being pivotally mounted onto said bowl, and being tiltable to operative or inoperative position independently of one another.

6. A combined water closet and bidet comprising a water closet bowl having the upper part of its front wall portion cut oi to form a depression centrally located with respect to the longitudinal axis of said bowl, a seat resting on top of said bowl, having an open front end forming a gap in correspondence of said depression, a bidet supported on top of said seat, having a front portion downwardly extending through said gap and within said depression, and a cover for said bidet, said seat, bidet and cover being pivotally mounted onto said bowl, and being tiltable to operative or inoperative position independently of one another, the front portion of said bidet and cover extending frontwardly beyond the front end of said bowl.

7. A combined water closet and bidet comprising a water closet bowl having the upper part of its front wall portion cut off to form a depression centrally located with respect to the longitudinal axis of said bowl, a bidet supported on top of said bowl, having a front portion downwardly extending within the depression at the front end of said bowl, and a cover for said bidet, said bidet and cover being pivotally mounted onto said bowl, and being tiltable to operative or inoperative position independently of each other.
