play devices and the principal object of the invention is to provide a frame in which the display device may be removably secured by a releasable backing member, with means for so mounting the backing member and frame upon a suitable support as to permit vertical, and preferably also lateral and angular, adjustment of the frame relatively to the support.
More particularly the invention relates to means of the character described for supporting a display device upon the bumper, or other member, of an automobile, in such manner that it can be adjustably positioned so that the display device can be effectively observed and in such position that it may not extend beyond the sides of the automobile fenders.
The display device may be in the form of an advertisement for any desirable commodity, or 'an ornamental design, or a number plate, or any other desirable device to which the attention of the public is to be directed.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described in which the display device can be removed from its frame without detachment of the frame from its support.
A further object of the invention is toprovide a support for a frame containing the display device which is of a rigid but pliable material adapted to be bent at rightangles to the plane of the frame, or offset in relation to the plane of the frame, whereby the device may be secured to any suitable support.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described in which the frame containing the display device isprovided with a backing member adapted to be locked to the frame and to clamp the display device therein and which is so hinged to the frame that when the backing plate is unlocked from the frame the parts may be separated to permit introduction and removal of the display device.
A further object of the invention is to provide a holder for a display device comprising a rectangular metallic frame of angle construction presenting a face flange and a peripheral flange, with a transparent pane of glass, or other suitable material, mounted in an integral peripheral resilient cushioning member having a groove to receive the peripheral edge of the pane and notched to permit the bending of the cushioning member around the corners of the frame, and a backing plate releasably connected to said frame adapted to clamp the display device upon the cushioning member in such manner that the resilience of the cushioning member will insure the maintenance of such clamping relation and will also provide a seal which will protect the dis This invention relates to improvements in display device from water or from the dampnessof the atmosphere.
These and other objects and features of the invention will more fully appear from the following description and the accompanying drawings,
and will be particularly pointed out in the claims.

The holder for the display device comprises a preferably rectangular metallic frame of angle bar construction presenting a face flange I and a peripheral flange 2 extending at right angles to the face flange and adapted to contain a transparent pane 3 through which a suitable display device 4, such as an advertising card and fanciful design, or a number plate, may be observed, and a backing plate 5 also fitting within the frame and secured therein by suitable locking means.
The frame may be and desirably is constructed in accordance with the manner disclosed in my prior Patent No. 1,927,564, granted September 19, 1933, but may also be in the form of a continuous frame of angle iron construction bent into rectangular or other suitable shape.
The transparent pane, which preferably is glass, is peripherally surrounded by a cushioning member 6 of rectangular cross section, and preferably of rubber, having a groove 1 to receive the peripheral edge'or edges of the transparent pane. The cushioning member is provided with notches 8 through the front and rear portions of the cush ioning member, but not through the central portion thereof, so positioned as to permit the cushioning member to be bent readily around the edges of the transparent pane without puckering. Desirably the groove is nearer the front face than the back face of the cushioning member,
thereby providing a thickened resilient portion back of the pane for the purpose of insuring a better clamping and sealing action, as will hereinafter more fully appear. The backing plate fits closely within the peripheral flange 2 of the frame and desirably is provided with a central pair of bolt holes 9l0 equidistant from the ends thereof and other pairs of bolt holes I I -I2, I 3-I4, (see Figs. 2 and 3) the pairs of bolt holes II---l2 and I 3-I 4 being spaced apart longitudinally or horizontally of the backing plate at suitable distances from the bolt holes 8 and 9 and upon opposite sides thereof selectively to receive said bolts, so that said bracket may be positioned vertically or horizontally, relatively to said holder.
The backing plate 5 has secured to it near its lower edge a tab, or preferably a plurality of tabs I5, provided with eyes I6 and located symmetrical distances from the longitudinal center of the lower edge. Similar tabs I'l provided with eyes are secured to the lower edge of the frame in proximity to the tabs I5, the eyes of the tabs I5 and I! being in axial alinement.
A similar tab or tabs I8 are secured to the upper side of the angle iron frame and the backing plate is provided respectively with upper and lower notches l9 and 20 through which the tabs l1 and I8 respectively extend.
Desirably means are provided for both pivotally connecting the backing plate to the frame and locking the backing plate in closed position in such manner that it will clamp the display device against the cushioning member which surrounds the transparent pane. In the preferred construction shown a locking bar, or preferably a pair of reversely arranged locking bars 2| are provided which extend transversely of the frame and have their ends bent at right angles to extend through the tabs of the frame and backing member above described. The upper end portions 22 of the locking bar extend into a preferably short distance through the tabs I8 when in looking position, while the lower ends 23 are of considerably greater length and extend through the eyes of the tabs l5 and I1 and a considerable distance therebeyond, so that when the locking bars 2I are slid lengthwise of the frame toward its respective ends, the ends 22 may be removed from the eyes of the tabs I8, thereby releasing the connection between the upper edge of the backing plate and the frame, while a pivotal connection is maintained between the backing plate and frame by the ends 23 of said look- .ing bars.
When the locking bar or bars 2I are thus disengaged, the frame may be swung away from the backing plate 5 in the manner illustrated in Fig. 4 to permit the insertion or removal of the display device 4. When the display device has been inserted in the frame it may then be swung to closed position illustrated in Fig. 4, and the locking bars forced inwardly to cause the ends 22 thereof to enter the eyes of the tabs I8, thereby permanently locking the backing plate to the frame.
The eyes I! and I8 are so located that when the frame is in closed position the display device will be clamped against and will compress the backing member, particularly the thickened portion thereof, and the resilience of said cushioning member will not only maintain a firm clamping relation between the display device and the backing member, but also will effectively seal the frame against the entrance of moisture or water which might injure the display device, particularly if the latter were of cardboard.
A further object of the invention, as above stated, is to provide a suitable supporting means which may be adjustably secured to the backing member so that the frame may be supported in any desired position. To accomplish this purpose a supporting bracket is employed which preferably is in the form of a relatively thin flat bar 24, of rigid but somewhat pliable metal, having near its upper end a central longitudinal slot 24 and bolts 25 which extend respectively through the pair of bolt holes 9 and ID, or through the pair of bolt holes II and I2, or i3-I4, to provide a connection between the supporting bracket and the backing plate which permits the bracket to be positioned in vertical, horizontal, or angular relation to the longitudinal axis of the holder 50 that the holder may be properly mounted on any suitable support. Desirably a spacer plate 21 is interposed between the backing plate 5 and the supporting bar 24 of sufficient thickness to maintain the plane of the plate in substantial parallelism with the face of the supporting bar 24, and also to prevent bending of the backing plate when the nuts on the bolt 26 are set up.
Means are provided for securing the lower end of the supporting member to a suitable support, such as a bumper of an automobile. A preferred means which is illustrated herein comprises a clamping plate 28 which is secured to the bar 24 by bolts 29 and 30 which are spaced apart a distance approximately equal to or slightly greater than the width of a bumper bar 3I so that the bumper bar may be clamped between the plate 28 and the supporting bar 24 by the bolts 29 and 30 when the nuts 32 and 33 are set up. The lower part of the supporting bar 24 may also be provided with a hole 34 through which a bolt or screw may be inserted to secure the same to some other form of support.
As illustrated in Fig. 3 the pliability of the bar 24 will permit the lower portion thereof to be bent at an angle, such as a right angle, to the plane of the supporting bar. The pliability of the supporting bar will also enable it to be bent to provide an offset 35, as illustrated in Fig. 5, which under certain conditions will be desirable.
As illustrated in Fig. 2 various adjustments of the connection between the supporting bar 24 and the frame may be provided. As illustrated the supporting bar may be swung laterally to the right, as in dotted lines, or to the left, and the bolts inserted in the bolt holes I0 and I2 in the backing plate, and thereafter clamped by the bolts and washers, as illustrated in full lines, or the supporting bar may be positioned in angular relation to the frame, as illustrated in dotted lines at the left of Fig. 2, in which case the lower bolt 26 extends through the backing plate, the spacer 21 and the supporting bar 24 with the bolt 26 engaging the edge of the supporting bar 24 or located in such close proximity thereto that the washer will overlie the edge of the supporting bar and when the nuts 26 and 32 are set up will effectively clamp the frame to the supporting bar 24 into angular position illustrated, or in such other angular position as may be permitted by this construction.
It will be understood that the particular embodiment of the invention as shown herein is of an illustrative character, and that various changes may be made in construction, arrangement of parts and in the manner in which the backing plate is secured to and locked to the frame within the spirit and scope of the following claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is:

A holder for a display device comprising a rectangular frame of angle construction presenting a face flange and a peripheral flange, a transparent pane mounted in said frame, a backing plate fitting within said frame having at its lower end tabs provided with eyes, complementary tabs having eyes mounted on the inner lower side of said frame adjacent to the tabs upon said backing plate, other tabs mounted upon the upper side of said frame, locking bars extending transversely of said frame having ends bent at right angles thereto, one of said ends slidably extending through and well beyond the lower complementary tabs of said backing plate and frame, and the other of said ends slidably extending a relatively short distance through the tabs at the upper end of said frame, whereby said locking bars will hold the backing plate locked to said frames when engaging the eyes of both sides of said frame, but upon sliding of the locking bars lengthwise of said frame the shorter ends of said locking bar may be detached from their tabs, while the longer ends of said locking bar provide a pivotal connection between said backing plate and said frame permitting the frame to be opened for the introduction and removal of the display device.

A holder for a display device comprising a rectangular metallic frame of angle construction presenting a face flange and a peripheral flange extending at right angles thereto, a transparent pane mounted in an integral peripheral resilient cushioning member of rectangular cross section having a groove to receive the peripheral edges of said pane and notched to permit bending of said cushioning member around the corners of said pane, a display device removably seated upon said cushioning member, a backing plate releasably secured to said frame fitting within said peripheral flange, and means for locking said backing plate to said frame to clamp said display device against said resilient cushioning member.

A holder for a display device comprising a rectangular metallic frame of angle construction presenting a faceflange and a peripheral flange, a transparent pane of glass mounted in an integral peripheral rubber cushioning member of rectangular cross section having a groove to receive the peripheral edge of said glass and located nearer to the front side of said cushioning member than to its back, said cushioning member being notched to permit the bending of the same around the corners of said pane, a display device removably seated upon said cushioning member, a backing plate hinged to said frame, means for locking said backing plate to said frame in such manner that the resilience of said cushioning member will clamp the display device firmly against the backing plate.

A holder for a display device comprising a rectangular metallic frame of angle construction presenting a face flange and a peripheral flange, a transparent pane of glass mounted in an integral peripheral rubber cushioning member of rectangular cross section having a groove to receive the peripheral edge of said glass and located nearer to the front side of said cushioning member than to its back, said cushioning member being notched to permit the bending of the same around the corners of said pane, a display device removably seated upon said cushioning member, a backing plate hinged to said frame, means for locking said backing plate to said frame in such manner that the resilience of said cushioning member will clamp the display device firmly against the backing plate, a flat frame-supporting bar of pliable metal having a central longitudinal slot near its upper end, bolts extending through a suitably spaced pair of bolt holes in said backing plate and through said slot and provided with nuts and washers to clamp said backing plate to said supporting bar, and means for securing the lower end of said supporting bar to a suitable support.

A holder for a display device comprising a metallic frame of angle construction presenting a face flange and a peripheral flange extending substantially at right angles thereto, a backing plate fitting within said peripheral flange and hinged thereto at its lower edge to permit introduction and removal of the display device, means for locking said backing plate within said peripheral flange, a bracket secured to said backing plate adapted to permit opening and closing of said holder for removal and replacement of the display device without detaching said holder from said bracket, and means for securing said bracket to a suitable support.

A holder for a display device comprising a metallic frame of angle construction presenting a face flange and a peripheral flange extending substantially at right angles thereto, a backing plate fitting within said peripheral flange and hinged thereto at its lower edge to permit introduction and removal of the display device, means for locking said backing plate within said peripheral flange, a bracket secured to said backing plate adapted to permit opening and closing of said holder for removal and replacement of the display device without detaching said holder from said bracket, comprising a narrow flat plate having a central slot near one end, a pair of bolts adjustable in said slot, a pair of bolt holes in said backing plate spaced apart vertically and located centrally of the length thereof to receive said bolts, and means for securing said bracket to a suitable support.

A holder for a display device comprising a metallic frame of angle construction presenting a face flange and a peripheral flange extending substantially at right angles thereto, a backing plate fitting Within said peripheral flange and hinged thereto at its lower edge to permit introduction and removal of the display device, means for locking said backing plate within said peripheral flange, a bracket secured to said backing plate adapted to permit opening and closing of said holder for removal and replacement of the display device without detaching said holder from said bracket, comprising a narrow flat plate having a central slot near one end, a pair of bolts adjustable in said slot, a pair of bolt holes in said backing plate spaced apart vertically and located centrally of the length thereof, other pairs of bolt holes in said backing plate respectively so spaced apart horizontally from said bolt holes as selectively to receive said bolts and permit the bracket to be positioned in vertical, horizontal or angular relation to the longitudinal axis of the holder, so that the holder may be properly mounted on any suitable support.
