IMPROVEMENT IN LAMPS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 207,314, dated August 20, 1878 application filed June 22, 1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES F. SPENCER, of the city of Rochester, county of Monroe, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Lamps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a front elevation of my improved lamp. Fig. 2 is an end elevation looking at right angles to Fig. 1.

My improvement relates to those lamps which, like the German student-lamp, are adjustable up and down upon a standard.

The invention consists in the combination of a cylindrical lamp-body, having abearin g upon its back side, and a standard set upon one side of its supporting-base and extendingup within the shade, the bearing of the lamp sliding on the standard, and secured by a set-screw, the whole so arranged that the lamp is brought 1 centrally over the base to properly balance, as

hereinafter more fully set forth.

- A represents the base, which is preferably of circular form, and is weighted to keep its place. B is the standard or rod upon which slides the lamp-body. This rod is attached fast to the base on one side, as shown in Fig. 2.

It is preferably square in cross-section or flattened on the back side to prevent the lamp,

which slides up and down thereon, from turning around axially.

C is the lamp-body. It is a cylinder lying horizontally in front of the standard, and having, on its back side, a bearing, a, which slides upon the standard, and is secured thereto at any desired adjustment by means of a setscrew, b. The burner is attached in the center of this lamp, and supports the ordinary shade or reflector D. The top of the standard passes up inside the shade, so that its upper portion is entirely hidden, and the shade does not interfere with the adjustment, as the standard can pass through the open top.

The special object of this invention is to produce oheapness in a vertically-adjustable lamp. Lamps like the German student, with the oil-fount on one side and the burner on the other side of the standard, are expensive, and occupy much space. Ordinary round lamps cannot be attached to the standard, as herein described, owing to their large size and projection. The only way of attaching such lamps heretofore has been to make a tube passing through the center of the lamp, sliding on the standard, in which case two burners have to be used, one at each end.

By making the lamp of cylinder form, as do scribed, with the bearing on the back side, and by setting the standard on one side of the supporting -base, the lamp is brought centrally over the base to properly balance, and a single burner in the center of the lamp can be employed, and the ordinary shade be used, making the lamp in simple and convenient form, and at the minimum of cost.

aving thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- 1. In a vertically-adjustable lamp, the combination of the cylindrical lamp-body C, provided with the bearin g aon its back side, and the standard B, set on one side of its support ing-base, the bearing sliding on the standard and being secured by a set-screw, the whole arranged as described, so that the lamp-body rests over the center of the supportingbase to properly balance the lamp, as herein shown and described. a

2. In avertically-adj ustable lamp, the standard B, set on one side of its supporting-base, in combination with a cylindrical lamp-body sliding thereon, arranged with a central burner and shade, the said standard passing up through the shade, as herein shown and described.
