Jan. 26, 1937. w. o. LANGlLLE CASING AND SUPPORTING FOOT STRUCTURE Filed Aug. 15, 1935 Patented Jan. 26, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CASIN G AND SUPPORTING FOOT STRUCTURE Application August 15, 1935, Serial No. 36,339
6 Claims.
This invention relates to a hollow casing and supporting foot structure, such, for example, as used to house thev working parts of a foot-operated motor-controller cr rheostat.
The invention has for an object to provide an improved and simplified casing and supporting foot structure which may be readily manufactured and assembled and in which the feet are firmly gripped by the casing.
With the above and other objects in view, as will hereinafter appear, the invention comprises the devices, combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter set forth and illustrated in the accompanying drawing of a preferred embodiment of the invention, from which the several features of the invention and the advantages attained thereby will be readily understood by those skilled in the art.
A feature of the invention is the provision for clamping the supporting feet between the separable cover and base members of the casing. Another feature of the invention is the provision of foot-receiving pockets in the casing whereby the feet are conned in assembled relation with the casing prior to the tightening oi the footclamping means.
In the accompanying drawing Fig. 1 is a longitudinal vertical section through a sewing machine motor controller or rheostat embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the controller. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan View of one end of the controller casing. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary top plan view of the removable bottom member of the controller casing. Fig. 6 is a section on the line 6-6, Fig. 2, and Fig. '7 is a perspective View of one of the supporting feet of the controller.
The controller casing comprises a top or upper member A and a bottom member B, each of which is preferably molded in one piece from phenolic condensation material or articial resin, such as bakelite, which does not soften under heat conditions and has good mechanical strength and high electrical insulating properties. The top member A is preferably of hollow rectangular form and may comprise a to-p wall I and side 1 walls 2 which latter are formed with internal corner ledges 3. The bottom member B may be substantially flat and of rectangular form and is preferably detachably secured to the top member A, within the side Walls 2 of the latter, by means of the corner screws 4 which are screwed into the ledges 3. The bottom member B preferably has rounded corners 5 which are spaced from the rounded internal corner walls 6 of the top member A to form pockets to receive and position the vertical shank 'I of the rubber feet C. The Shanks 'I of the feet C preferably have anges 8 at their upper ends overlapping the bottom member B and these flanges are pref- 5 erably clamped by and between the bottom member B and the ledges 3 of the top member A. The feet C may have at their lower ends the tread portions 9 which may be of annular form and which may underlap the bottom member B 10 although these details are not essential to the invention.
The bottom member B may support the usual carbon compression type rheostat unit I il, such disclosed in the U. S. patent to Chason, No. 15 1,643,292; dated Sept. 27, 1927. The resistance of such a rheostat is controlled by endwise movement of its operating pull-rod II biased by a recovery spring I2. The pull-rod II carries the threaded adjustable nut I3 engaged by the pull 20 strap I4 pivotally connected at I5 to the lever I 6 which is fulcrumed at II on the bottom member B and carries a cross-bar I8 engaged by the lower end faces IS of the pedal slide 2i) mounted in the top member A of the casing. A pair of 25 recovery springs 2I connected to the ends of the cross-bar I8 are anchored to the horns 22 rising from the base B. The rheostat I0 and actuating parts therefor within the casing A, B, form no part of the present invention. 30
The structure may be readily assembled by rst applying the feet C to the corners 5 of the base B, as shown in Fig. 5. The cover A is then applied to the base B and the corner pockets thus formed conne the feet against accidental displacement from the corners 5 until the screws 4 are tightened. The feet C, being preferably made of soft rubber, have a tendency to cling to the carpet or oor surface upon which the rheo- 0 stat is used and prevent creeping of the rheostat away from the position in which it was placed for operation.
It is to be understood that the foregoing detailed description of a preferred embodiment of 45 the invention is not to be construed in limitation of the invention to details of construction and relative arrangements of parts not particularly specied in the appended claims.
Having thus set forth the nature of the in- 50 vention, what I claim herein is:-
1. A hollow casing having two separable sections formed with foot-positioning pockets, and supporting feet having vertical shank portions positioned in said pockets and horizontal termi- 55 nal shank portions clamped by and between said separable sections.
2. A casing comprising a hollow top member having a top wall and side walls formed wit-h in ternal ledges, a bottom member detachably secured to said top member within the side walls of the latter, and feet having Vertical shank portions disposed within and concealed by said side walls, and terminal shank anges clamped between said bottom member and the ledges of said top member, said feet having tread portions adapted to rest upon a at surface and support said casing.
3. A casing comprising a hollow top member having a top wall and side walls formed with internal ledges, a rectangular bottom member detachably secured to said top member within the side walls of the latter, and feet embracing the corners of said bottom member and having shank anges clamped between said bottom member and the ledges of said top member, said feet having tread portions adapted to rest upon a lat surface and support said casing.
4. A foot-operated motor controller casing comprising a rectangular top member having a top and side wall elements the latter of which are formed with internal corner ledges, a rectangular bottom member detachably secured to said top member within the side wall elements thereof, and rubber feet disposed at the corners of said members and having flanges overhanging said bottom member and clamped between the latter and the ledges of said top member.
5. A foot-operated motor controller casing comprising a top member having a top and side wall elements the latter of which are formed with internal corner ledges, a bottom member detachably secured to said top member within the side wall elements thereof, and rubber feet having shank anges overhanging said bottom member and clamped between the latter and the ledges of said top member, said feet having tread portions underlapping said bottom member.
6. A casing comprising a hollow upper member molded in one piece from phenolic condensation material and having a top wall and side walls formed with internal ledges, a bottom member molded from phenolic condensation material and detachably connected to said upper member within the side walls of the latter, and soft rubber feet for supporting said casing, said feet having shank flanges clamped between the bottom member and the ledges of the upper member.
