This invention relates to separable fasteners employing tapes or stringers having coupling links arranged and'spaced longitudinally of one edge thereof and more particularly to the slider 5 employed for coupling and uncoupling the stringers; and the object of the invention is to into the several positions permitting free movement of the slider on the stringers and also toy retain the slider against movement thereon; a further object being to provide a retaining member of the class described having a V-shaped portion disposed within the channel of the slider to serve as means for guiding the links of the stringers and to facilitate separation thereof when said member is in what may be termed a neutral or inoperative position, said pin member being disposed at the forward end of the transverse partition wall of the slider and forming in conjunction therewith the contractedside walls extending in the direction of the contracted or object being to provide said pin member of the portion thereof disposed outwardly of one side wall of the slider with a nger piece or pull part which may be fixed or movably supported in connection therewith; a still further object being to provide means for frictionally retaining the pin part in its neutral or inoperative position; and with these and other objects in view, the invention consists in a device of the class and for the purpose specified which is simple in construction, eilicient in use, and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the follow' ing specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which:

For the purpose of illustrating one use of my invention, in Figs. 1, 3 and 4 of the drawing I have shown a portion of two separable rfastener stringers I0 and II, onrone longitudinal edge portion of each of which are secured links I2 and I3 adapted `to be coupled and uncoupled as in other devices of this class. At I4, I have shown a slider employed for coupling and un- 20 coupling the links of the stringers, the slider consisting of top and bottom walls I and I6 joined together centrally of the wide end portion thereof by a body I1 to form two channels I8 and I9 for the links I2 and I3 at the wide end portion of the slider, which channels converge into a single channel 20 at the narrowor contracted end of the slider. The top and bottom walls or plates I5 and I6 of the slider include inwardly extending side flanges I5a, Ilia which engage the links of the fasteners to aid in coupling the same together.
At 2 I, I have shown a retaining member, wedge or cam in the form of a pin transversing the slider, preferably adjacent the wide end portion thereof and also preferably arranged forwardly of the coupling body I1. The pin includes an enlarged head or finger part 22 disposed outwardly of one wall or plate of the slider preferably the top wall I5. The other end of the 40 pin is riveted over as seen at 23 to retain the same against displacement from the slider while permitting free rotation of the member 2| in the slider.

into a position at 180 to that shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing, the unrecessed portion of the pin or member 2| will be moved into engagement with the links of the fastener to forcethem in'to engagement with the side flanges or walls |5a, |60, of the slider to securely retain the slider against movement on the stringers or to act as a cam or wedge between the links of the stringers to prevent movement of the slider thereon. One of the several locked or retained positions of the pin or member 2| is illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawing.
The enlarged part 22 as shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive includes an extending arm portion 25 having a bead 26 at 'the inner surface thereof to engage a socket or recess 21 in the top wall I5 of the slider to frictionally retain the member 2| in its neutral or inoperative position as seen in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing. With this construction, a finger piece or pull 28 is also employed, the same being pivotally supported in connection with the part 22 as indicated at 29. The nger piece or pull is also provided with an aperture 3|) adjacent the free end thereof tofacilitate attachment of a strip or ribbon thereto if desired in the manner illustrated in Fig. 8 of the drawing.
In Figs. 6 to 13 inclusive, I have shown several modified forms of construction, but in all of said figures the slider is substantially of the same structure as the slider shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive as is also the internal structure of the pin or member 2|. For this reason, said parts will be identified by the reference numerals as follows. In Fig. 6, |4a represents the slider and 2|a the pin member; in Fig. '7, these parts are represented at |411, 2lb; in Fig. 8, at |4c, 2|c; in Figs. 9 and 10, at |4d, 2|d; in Fig. 11, at |4e, 2|e; in Fig. 12, at |.4f, 2li; and in Fig. 13, at |4g and 2|g.
In Fig. 6 of the drawing, the enlarged portion 22a, of the member 2|a is in the form of a rectangular block to which is pivotally coupled a finger piece or pull 28a in the form of a horse shoe by means of which the slider may be moved longitudinally of the stringers and also by means of which the member 2|a may be rotated into several positions to retain the slider against movement on the stringers.
In Fig. 7 of the drawing, I have shown at 22h an enlarged part on the member 2lb which has an apertured extension 3| normally extending in the direction of and preferably beyond the wide end portion of the slider and with which a pull tape or other member indicated in dot and dash lines at 32 may be coupled.
In Fig. 8 of the drawing, I have shown at 22e an enlarged portion on the member 2|c which has apertured extensions 3|a and 3 Ib similar to the extension 3| but extending in opposite directions from the pin member 2|c. This construction may be used to support a pull tape or ribbon 32a or also as a means for locking and retaining the slider in the manner taught in Figs. 9 and 10, utilizing the apertured end 3|b of the part 22e forthis purpose.
In Figs. 9 and 10 ofthe drawing, I have shown a part 22d substantially similar to the part 22h, but in this construction, the slider also includes a projecting apertured portion 33 adapted to register with the apertured end portion 3|c of the part 2|d to receive a padlock or the like 34 for locking the slider against movement on the stringers. With this construction, when the part 22d is in its locked position as seen in Figs. 9 and 1|), the pin'member 2|d is in locked p0- simon instead ortho position which is illustrated in Fig. 7 oif the drawing. In this connection it will be understood that with all of the constructions shown, the position of the enlarged part or finger portion 22-22g may assume any angular position on the slider when the retaining or wedge pin member is in locked or operative position depending entirely upon the fancy or desire of the manufacturer in the different uses of the fastener. In other words, some manufacturers might require that the part 22-22g assume positions such as shown in Figs. 1, 6, 7, 11, 12 and 13 when the pin member is in its operative position and an angular position to those named when said pin member is in inoperative position as would be the case with the structure shown in Figs. 9 and 10.
In Fig. 11 of the drawing, the part 22e is in the form of a semi-pear-shaped member having a wide end portion 35 normally arranged at the wide end portion .of the slider and a contracted end portion 36 normally karranged adjacent the contracted end of the slider. This part will be relatively at and will adapt the slider to separable fasteners for use on gloves and other apparel of this type or where the need for a pull or finger piece part is not necessary.`
In Fig. l2 of the drawing, the part 22f has a contracted end portion 31 normally extending in the direction of the wide end portion of the slider and terminating in .an enlarged knob or f head 38 which may be aperturedl as indicatedl at 39 to receive a pull chain or' cord if desired.
In Fig. 13, the part 22g is substantially simiiar to the part 22e of Fig. 11 except' that the contracted end 40 includes an upwardly projecting apertured knob or head 4| which will serve as a finger piece and with which a pull chain or cord may be attached.
With all of the forms of construction shown, the pin member in addition to serving as means for securing or retaining the slider against movement on the stringers also serves to couple the side walls I5 and I6 of the slider together. When the slider is.made of a single die cast body as shown in the accompanying drawing, this pin member will serve to reinforce the slider. However, in this connection it will be understood that myy invention is applicable to sliders of any desired form and construction, and the particular form and contour of theV retaining or wedging member employed may be modified to suit the slider as well as the particular links employed on the stringers.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

In separable fasteners employing stringers having spaced links thereon adapted to be coupled and uncoupled, a slider movable longitudinally of the stringers to couple and uncouple said links, said slider having spaced side walls, means extending transversely through the side walls of the slider and'arranged vintermediate said Walls in the path ofv movement of the links therethrough for controlling the movement of the slider on said stringers, and said means comprising a rotatable member of less cross sectional area intermediate said side walls than in the planes of said side walls to forma recess for Afree movement of the links through said slider in one position of said member.

In separable fasteners employing stringers having spaced links thereon adapted to be coupled and uncoupled, a slider movable longitudi- 'nally of the stringers to cou-ple and uncouple said links, said slider' having spaced side Walls, means extending transversely through the side walls of the slider and arranged intermediate said walls in the path of movement of the links therethrough for controlling the movement of the slider on said stringers, said means compris-` ing a rotatable member of less cross sectional area intermediate said sidewalls than in the planes of said side walls to form a recess for free movement of the links through said slider in one position of said member, and said member being adapted in other rotatable positions thereof toengage said links and preventmovement of the slider thereon.

In separable fasteners employing stringers having spaced links thereon adapted to be coupled and uncoupled,'a slider movable longitudinally of the stringers to couple and uncouple said links, said slider having spaced side walls, means extending transversely through the side walls of the slider and arranged intermediate said- Walls in the path of movement of the links therethrough for controlling the movement of the slider on said stringers, said means comprising a rotatable "member of less cross sectional area intermediate said side walls than in the planes of said side walls to form a recess for free movement of the links through said slider in one position of said member, said member being adapted in other rotatable positions thereof to engage said links and prevent moveside walls of the slider and arranged intermef diate said walls in the path of movement of the links therethrough for controlling the movement of the slider on said stringers, said means com' prising a rotatable memberI of less cross sectional area intermediate said side walls than in the planes. of said side walls to form a recess for free movement of the links through said slider in one position of said member, said member being adapted in other rotatable positions thereof to engage said links and prevent movementY of .the slider thereon, said member having an enlarged integral part outwardly of one side wall of the slider by means of which said member maybe rotated, and said part and slider having interengaging elements for frictionally retaining said part and member in one position with respect to said slider. 5. In separate fasteners employing stringers having spaced links thereon adapted to be coupled and uncoupled, a slider movable longitudinally of the stringers to couple and uncouple said links, said slider having `spaced side walls,
means extending transversely through the side' walls of the slider and arranged intermediate said walls in the path of movement of the links therethrough for controlling the movement of the slider on said stringers, said means comprising a rotatable member of less cross sectional area intermediate said side walls than in the planes of said side walls to form a recess for free movement of the links through said slider in one position ofs aid member, said member being adapted in other rotatable positions thereof to engage said links and prevent movement of the slider thereon, said member having an enlarged integral part outwardly of one side wall of the slider by means of which said member may be rotated, said part and slider having interengaging elements for' frictionally retaining said part and member in one position with respect to said slider, and a finger piece or pull on said part.

In-separable Ifasteners employing stringers having spaced links thereon adapted to be coupled and uncoupled, a slider movable longitudinally of the stringers to couple and uncouple said`links,'said slider being channeled to re ceive said links, a pin extending transversely through the slider and the channel thereof and arranged inthe path of movement of the links through said channel for controlling the movement of the slider on said stringers, said f pin being rotatable in the slider, and the shank of the lpin within said channel being recessed for free movement of the links through said slider in one position of said pin and in other rotatable positions of said pin to engage said links to prevent movement of the slider thereon.
7, In separable fasteners employing stringers having spaced links thereon adapted to be coupled and uncoupled, a slider movable longitudinally of the stringers to couple and uncouple said links, said slider being channeled to receive said links, a pin -extending transversely through the slider and the channel thereof and arranged in the path of movement of the links through said channel for controlling the movement of the slider on said stringers, said pin being rotatable in the slider, the shank ofthe pin within said channel being recessed for free movement of the links through said slider in one position of saidI pin and in other rotatable positions of said pin to engage said links to prevent movement ofthe slider thereon, said pin having an enlarged part externally of the slider, by meansof which` said pin may be rotated, and .said part having a finger piece portion movably supported in connection therewith.

A slider for separable fasteners of the class described comprising a member consisting of spaced side plates joined at one wide end portion by a transverse body forming diverging channels at said end of the member, said channels converging to a single chamber -opening outwardly through the other narrow end of said member, a pin transversing said member intermediate said diverging channels and at the inner endportion of said body, and said pin being recessed to register with and partially form said channels in one position of the pin in said member in which position of said pin said member is freely movable longitudinally of the fastener. .u

A slider for separable fasteners of the class describedA comprising a member consisting of spaced side plates joined at one wide end portion by a transverse body forming diverging channels at said end of the member, said channels converging to a single 'chamber opening outwardly through the other narrow end of said member, a pin transversing said member intermediate said diverging channels and at the inner end portion of said body, said pin being recessed to register with and partially form said channels in one position of the pin in said member, in which position of said pin said member is freely movable longitudinallyof the fastener, and
means outwardly of one of the side plates of said slider for operating said pin to move the same into position to block at least one of the channels r`of said slider.

A slider for separable fasteners of the class described comprising a member consisting of spaced side plates joined at one wide end portion by a transverse body forming diverging channels at said end of the member, said channels converging to a single chamber opening outwardly through the other narrow end of said member, a pin transversing said member intermediate said diverging channels and at the inner end portion of said body, said pin being recessed to register with and partially form said channels in one position of the pin in said'member, in which position of said pin said member is freely movable longitudinally of the fastener, means outwardly of one of the side plates of said slider for operating said pin to Amove the same into position to block at least one of the channels of said slider, and said means including a finger piece portion. A slider for separable fasteners of the class described comprising a member consisting of spaced side plates joined at one Wide end portion by a transverse body forming diverging channels at said end of the member, said channels converging to a single chamber opening outwardly through the other narrow end of .-said member, a pin transversing said member intermediate said diverging channels and at the inner end portion of said body, said pin being recessed to register with and partially form said channels in one position of the pin in said member, in which position of said pin said member is freely movable longitudinally of the fastener, means outwardly of one of the side plates of said slider for operating said pin to move the same into position to block at least one of the channels of said slider, and means for retaining said rst named means in one position on said slider.

A slider for separable fastener stringers comprising side plates, a round pin member transversing said plates and dividing the slider into diverging channels at one end portion of theV side plates being substantially V-shaped in crossl sectional form in forming the channels in said slider, `and means outwardly of one of the side plates of said slider for rotating said pin member to project a part lthereof into at least one of said diverging channels to obstruct said channel to prevent movement of the slider on said fastener stringers.

A slider for separable fastener` stringers comprising side plates, a round pin member transversingbsaid plates and dividing the slider into diverging channels at one end portion of the slider, said channels converging at the other end of the slider, the pin member intermediate said side plates being substantially V-shaped in cross sectional form in forming the channels in said slider, means outwardly of one of the side plates of said slider for rotating said pin member ing channels thereof, said pin being rotatable in v the slider, means for preventing lateral displacement of the pin from said slider, and said pin being recessed Within the slider to partially form the diverging channels therein in one rotatable position of the pin in saidslider.

In a slider for separable fastener stringers, said slider having diverging channels at one wide end thereof which converge into a single channel at the other narrow end of the slider, a round pin passed transversely through the wide end portion of the slider intermediate the diverging channels thereof said pin being rotatable in the slider, means for preventing lateral displacement of the pin from said slider, said pin being recessed within the slider to partially form the di verging channels therein in one rotatable position of the pin in said slider, and the unrecessed portion of said pin being adapted to obstruct at least one of the diverging channels of said slider in another rotatable position of said pin.

A slider for separable fastener stringers comprising front' and rear plates spaced apart to form a chamber therebetween, a transverse body portion arranged between and joining said plates at one end of the slider and extending into the chamber thereof to divide said chamber into diverging channels at said end of the slider, means transversing the slider and chamber thereof at the inner end of said transverse body portion for partially forming at least one of said diverging channels in one position of said means, and said means being movable into position to partially close said channel in retaining the slider against Qmovement on the fastener Stringer.
17. A slider for separable fastener stringers comprising front and rear plates spaced apart to form a chamber therebetween, a transverse body portion arranged between and joining said plates at `one end of the slider and extending into the chamber thereof to divide said chamber into diverging channels at said end of the slider, means transversing the "slider and chamber thereof at the inner end of said transverse body portion for partially forming at least one of said diverging channels in one position of said means, said means being movable into position to partially close said channel in retaining the slider against movement on the fastener stringer, said means comprising a pin-like member rotatably mounted in said side plates, and an enlarged part outwardly of one of the side plates facilitating the rotation of said member.
