This invention relates to improvements in hinges of the concealed type, and aims to provide a hinge of simple construction wherein the Vtwohinge plates may be turned to substantially Idegrees to one another.
It is an object of the invention to provide such a hinge having one relatively small and shallow hinge plate which may be mounted in a box side when only a small portion of the latter has been cut away; thus I aim to provide such a hinge one plate of which may be mounted in a refrigerator box without removing any considerable portion of the insulation.
Another object of the invention is to provide such a hinge wherein only a few simple parts are employed for controlling the path of movement of the two plates relative to one another; and wherein these parts are so arranged as to clear a flange which may project from the door to which one hinge plate is secured in all angular positions of the hinge plates, when this ange is so arranged as to form a seal against which the other hinge plate bears when the hinge is in closed position.
A further object of the invention is to provide such a hinge which is simple and cheap to manufacture, and efficient in operation.
Having thus stated some of the objects and advantages of the invention I will now proceed to describe it in detail with the aid of the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the hinge when open, and
Figure 2 is a plan view thereof.
Figure 3 is a sectional view of the parts by which the plates .are connected but neglecting the latter; this section is taken on the line 3 3 of Figure 1.
Figures 4 and 5 are sections on the lines 4--4 and 5-5 respectively of Figure 2.
Figure 6 is a plan View showing the hinge in closed position, and
Figure 7 is a front elevation thereof.
Figure 8 is a section of a box with the door closed and mounted upon the hinge.
Referring to the drawings, I and 2 designate two hinge plates. The plate I is of shallow box section and has apertures 3 formed therethrough for the passage of fastening means (not shown) to secure the plate in a recess formed in the box C, Figure 8, to which the hinge is applied. The plate 2 consists of two spaced parallel walls 4 connected around portions of their margins by a web 5. Integral with the walls 4 are outwardly projecting flanges 6 suitably apertured as shown (Cl. Iii-166) at 'I for fastening means (not shown) to secure the plate 2 to the door B of the box. A denotes a sealing strip upon the door B.
Through the walls 4 of the plate 2 aligned guide slots 8 inclined towards their extremities remote 5 from the iianges 6 are formed. The walls 4 are substantially parallel to two sides 9 of the plate I. Pivoted on a pin Ill the extremities of which are mounted in the sides 9 of the plate I is one extremity of a segmental control member 10 I l through the opposite extremity of which a pin I2 extends which is slidable in the guide slots 8.
Pivoted upon another pin I3, the extremities of which are mounted in the walls ll of the plate 2 1'5 is one extremity of a curved arm I4. The latter extends into the control member II, and, in certain positions of the hinge, completely through the said member, which usually consists of two iiat parallel portions IIa. connected to one an- 20 other for a part of their length by an integral rib IIb. Intermediately cf its length the arm I4 is pivotally mounted upon a pin I5 the extremities of which terminate in the portions IIa.` of the member II. Thus the arm I4 is pivoted in- 25 termediately upon the said control member I I.
Pivoted upon yet another pin I ii the extremities of which are supported by the sides 9 of the plate I, is one extremity of an arcuate link Il which at its other extremity is pivotally con- 30 nected by a pin I8 to the outer end of the arm I4. The link I 'I in section is preferably formed similarly to the member II, and consists usually of two parallel portions I'Ia held in spaced relation by an integral rib IIb. Towards its extremity 35 remote from the plate I the height of the link Il is reduced to enter between two flanges I 4a formed upon the extremity of the arm I4 remote from the plate 2. Since the width of both the link Il and arm I4 for the major portions of 40 their length is preferably such that they slide freely upon the inner faces of the control member portions IIa. The arm I4 in the present instance is also formed of two spaced parallel portions I4b connected by integral webs I4c.
On the outer faces of the link portions I'Ia and the arm portions IlIb adjacent their pivotal mountings on the plates I and 2 respectively guide strips I'Id and Idd are provided so that 0 the spacing between opposed pairs of strips is such that they slide freely between the inner faces 9 of the plate I, and of the walls 4 of the plate 2 respectively.

As the hinge is moved from closed to open position the pin I2 and the extremity of the control member II through which it passes travel towards the flanges 6 of the plate 2; the pin I2 travelling along the guide slots 8. Due to the movement of the plate 2 the arm I4 is turned about its intermediate pivot pin I5, and the angular movement of the plate 2 relative to the plate I is controlled by the arm I4 and link I1. Due to the curved form of the member II, arm I4 and link II clearance is provided at all times as the hinge is being opened or closed for the door flange A also indicated in Figures 2 and 6, which extends laterally adjacent one side of the plate 2 of the hinge. This fiange is one commonly employed upon refrigerator doors, and is so placed that one side of the plate I and of the box to which the said plate is secured bears against it to form a seal when the hinge and door are in closed position. It will be further noted that the construction herein described contemplates, and permits the use of, a small and shallow plate I of box section; thus I provide a small plate which may be housed in a relatively small cavity in the box C without materially reducing the insulation in that portion of the wall of the box.
While in the foregoing the preferred embodiment of the invention has been described and shown, it is understood that the construction is susceptible to such alterations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A hinge comprising a shallower and a deep-l er plate, one margin of the shallower plate resting substantially parallel and contiguous to the margin of the deeper plate when the hinge is closed, guide means carried by the deeper plate extending substantially at right angles to the the shallower plate and pivoted at its other extremity to said arm.
2. A hinge comprising a shallower and a deeper plate, one margin of the shallower plate resting substantially parallel and contiguous to one margin of the deeper plate when the hinge is closed, guide means carried by the deeper plate which extend substantially at right angles to the aforesaid margin of the deeper plate throughout the greater portion of its depth, an arm having one extremity pivoted upon the deeper plate, a link one extremity of which is pivoted upon the shallower plate, the opposite extremities of said arm and link being pivoted to one another and permitting movement of the two plates through substantially |86 degrees to one another, and a connecting member pivoted to the shallower plate and slidable in the guide means whereby the sliding end of the member moves substantially from rear to front of the deeper plate to control the relative positions of said plates as the hinge is moved from closed to fully open position, said arm being also pivoted on said member.
3. A hinge comprising a shallower and a deeper plate, a curved arm pivoted at one extremity on the deeper plate, a curved link pivoted at one extremity upon the shallower plate, said arm'and link being pivoted to one another at their opposite extremities to permit 'movement of the plates through 180 degrees, opposed guide slots formed in the deeper plate which extend throughout the greater portion of the depth thereof and are curved towards their rear extremities, a curved connecting member pivoted at one extremity to the shallower plate, said member being pivotally connected to the curved arm intermediately of the ends of both the member and the arm, said member also having its other extremity guided by said slots during the movement of the hinge whereby the relative positions of the twoplates are controlled throughout the hinge movement, and the curved ends of the guide slots controlling the angularity of the adjacent faces of the two plates to one another during the commencement of the opening movement of the hinge.
