IMPROVEMENT IN TOBACCO-PIPES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 206,699, dated August 6, 1878; application filed March 29, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB M. BAUI, of Selins Grove, in the county of Snyder and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Tobacco-Pipe, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a top view of my improved tobaccopipe, and Fig. 2 a sectional side elevation of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to such improvements in tobacco-pipes that there is no danger of tire attending the smoking in barns or woods, and that the lid may be readily removed from the bowl of the pipe, so as to be conveniently filled from the pouch. The pipe has also a convenient attachment for igniting the match and lighting the pipe in convenient manner.
The invention consists of a cover or lid bein g attached to the rim of the pipe by a rear and front hook entering a rear socket-hole and front groove below the rim. The lid is perforated, and has a central top slot, with hinged inner friction-plate and outer auxiliary lid.
Referring to the drawing, A represents the bowl of my improved tobacco-pipe; B, the cap, cover, or lid of the same, which is applied to the rim of the bowl by front and rear hooks a a, the rear hook entering a socket hole, b, of the rim, and the front hook the groove 1), out into the front part of the rim. The cover may thereby be slid off by pressing with the fingernail against the side of the front hook, the rear hook being then readily detached from the rear socket.
The cover is connected by a chain or cord to the stem of the pipe, and when removed from the bowl is entirely out of the way while filling and cleaning the pipe, and readily replaced into position, and not liable to get out of order. This admits the more convenient filling of the pipe from the tobacco-pouch than when the old style of hinged lid is used, which is soon bent out of shape or entirely broken on.
The lid B is hemispherical or cone-shaped, and provided along itslower part, near the rim, with small air-holes cl, and at the upper part with a center slot, c, that is closed by a hinged auxiliary lid, 0, which is provided with a metal friction-plate, I), having grooved or roughened surface.
Vhcn the pipe is desired to be lighted the hinged lid is thrown back, so that the match may be readily ignited on the frictional plate, and then brought directly into the pipe just where it is wanted for lighting the tobacco. The cover protects the flame of the match from the wind, so that the light can be readily obtained for the pipe in the open air, and even in the wind, whether walking, driving, or boating, a dry flictional surface being thereby furnished at any moment, in convenient manner, without giving the wind a chance to blow out the match when ignited.
The pipe is perfectlydangerless, as the cover prevents any escape of sparks, and is readily filled by detaching the cover, and lighted by means of the top slot and hinged frictional plate.
Hawin g thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with the rim of the tobacco -pipe, having rear socket and front groove, of a detachable lid having rear and front hooks for being readily attached to or detached from the bowl, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the bowl of a tobacco-pipe, of a cover having a cent-er slot and hinged auxiliary lid closing the same, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the bowl of a tobaeco-pipe, of a detachable lid having center slot, with hinged auxiliary lid, and interior friction-plate attached to the auxiliary lid, substantially as shown and described.
4. A lid for tobacco-pipes, having airholes at the lower part, a central slot, and a hinged lid, with a metal friction-plate, substantially as and for the purpose described.
