Description

Patented Jan. 5, 1937 Alfred J. Robertson, Vancouver, British Colum- SADDLE mail! bia, Canada, assignor to Stanley Erhardt, doing business as the Whitman Saddle Manufacturing Co.
Application February 25, 1935, Serial No. 8,095 In India, April 7, 1934 2 Claims.
My invention relates to improvements in saddle girths, and the object of the invention is to devise a saddle girth which will hold the saddle firmly in place, and not only this, but will obviate any danger of the saddle becoming displaced or falling off.
A further object is to provide such a girth as will expand to the play of the muscles and yet afford a rm and non-slipping attachment for the saddle.
1 My invention consists of an inelastic safety band which is placed next the body of the horse and stop loops placed near the end of the band, a supplemental band extending at the ends l5 through the stop loops and provided with suitable buckles, stops designed to come in Contact with the stop loops and an intermediate elastic section secured preferably in the centre of the supplemental band and forming part thereof, the parts being otherwise arranged and constructed in detail as hereinafter more particularly explained.
Fig. 1 is a 'perspective view of my improved girth. l
Fig. 2 is a plan intermediately broken away.
Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section of the girth also intermediately broken away.
Fig. 4 is a transverse cross section through the centre of the girth.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail showing the means whereby the elastic loops are connected to the supplemental band, and
Fig. 6 is a cross section showing the connection of the stop pin to the supplemental band.
In the drawing like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
l is an inelastic band which is designed to be placed against the body of the horse. 2 are stop loops which are secured in proximity to each end 40 of the inelastic band, both the band and stop loops being formed of leather. 3, 3 is a supplemental band formed in two .parts as indicated. 4 are stop pins secured to the supplemental band 3, 3. The supplemental band 3, 3 is supplied 45 with end buckles and is formed at the central portion with divided at loops 1, 1. 5 are links preferably made of steel and having a straight side and a divided side having an opening sufciently wide to permit of the insertion of the 50 divided flat loops l which areV arranged so that each member may be turned substantially at right angles for insertion into the divided link at each side, the space of the divide being so narrow that the flat links cannot be Withdrawn 55 except by turning them substantially at right angles, or practically into the same position in which they are inserted.
6 are loops of elastic material which are necessarily inserted through the divided opening of the steel link previous to the placing of the Vflat loops in position on the link. The loops 5 are capable of expansion and contraction so that the supplemental band is permitted of a longitudinal movement parallel to the inelastic band l limited to the extent of the stop pins 4 contacting with the stop loops. 2.
Having now particularly described the parts involved in my invention, I shall now briefly describe its utility.
'Ihe girth is placed around the body of the horse and is connected with the saddle in the usual manner. The supplemental band permits of sufficient tension so as to cause the band to fit snugly to the horse in order that the saddle may be securely heldin position, and at the same time, on account of the elasticity of the central portion of the supplemental band, allow of sufficient give so. as to make the band comfortable on the body of the horse. The amount of give is only limited by the stop pins co-ming in contact with the stop loops so that in case of a rupture the band is safely in position and, therefore, insures the safety of the saddle.
The amount of play between the loops 2 and the stop pins 4 permit, therefore, of a slight further expansion of the elastic section coming into play to compensate for the expansion of the body of the animal during motion. On the girth being attached and tightened the elastic section 6 elongates causing the girth as a whole to grip the animal with the desired pressure. The elastic section t may be made of any desired Itensile strength.
Although I have described my invention in detail the size and positioning of the parts may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim as my invention is:
l. A saddle girth comprising an inelastic band fitting against the body of a horse, incapable of extension or buckling, a supplemental band located on the exterior of the inelastic band independently adjustable on the outside of said inelastic band, and comprising two parts having flat divided loops at the adjacent ends thereof, rubber straps having loops formed on the respective ends thereof, C-shaped links connecting the rubber straps to and between the adjacent ends of the parts of the supplemental band, each of said links having straight sides respectively disposed through the flat divided loop of the part of the supplemental band and through the adjacent loops of the rubber straps, and means for limiting the outward movement of the supplemental band longitudinally on the outside of the inelastic band.
2. A saddle girth comprising an inelastic band fitting against the body of a horse, a supplemental band located on the exterior of the inelastic band and made in two parts having flat divided loops at the adjacent ends thereof, rubber straps having loops formed on the respective ends thereeach side of the same to project beyond the ends 10 of the stop loops.
