TOOL
Filed Jan. 14, 1936 Inventor ,Ziyle Fl@c% Patented Dec. 15, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in pliers and more particularly to a novel attachment for pliers.
The principal object of the tool is to provide 5 means in a single unit which can be used by watchmakers for holding and manipulating practically all parts of timepieces.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a tool of the character stated which in use will be handy, easy to operate and not liable to damage articles being held.
Other important objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to the reader of the following specification.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 represents a side elevational view of the tool.
Figure 2 represents a nose end elevational view of the tool.
Figure 3 represents an enlarged fragmentary perspective view of the jaw ends of the tool.
Figure 4 is a side elevational view of one of the sections of the tool attachment.
Referring to the drawing wherein like numerals designate like parts, it can be seen that the tool consists of the handles AA pivotally connected as at B and provided with jaws CC. The end portions 5 of the jaws C are each blunt and provided with a semi-circular recess 6 to U snugly receive the semi-circular shaped end portion of the lug 'I which supports the semicylindrical shaped attachment segment 8. Each of these sections 8 has a longitudinally extending slot 9 in the back portion thereof while the front portion of the same is entirely open and provided with rather broad plane edge portions I0. These edge portions II0 are provided with transversely extending grooves II at the upper ends thereof and additional transversely extending grooves I2I2 at the intermediate portions thereof. The bottom portions of these semi-cylindrical shaped sections 8 are provided with semi-circular shaped cut-out portions I3. The top I4 of each of these sections 8 is provided 45 with a semi-circular shaped cut-out I with which a radially disposed slot I6 merges as is clearly shown in Figures 2 and 3.
It can now be seen, that the purpose in having the sections 8 semi-circular is to permit the same 50 to fit between the balance arm and balance rim when holding the watch balance by its arms in the grooves II. The smooth surfaces II] are provided for gripping and holding flat objects. The grooves II are intended for holding screws 55 while polishing the heads of the same, holding of balance arms while adjusting timing screws or balance screws or removing hair spring from balance staff. As a matter of fact the grooves serve for holding the regulator lever, detents, winding stems, setting lever, second hand, cannon pinions or wheel arbors for cleaning leaves of pinions.
The semi-circular cut-outs I5 are intended for holding large screw heads, jewel settings, roller tables, hour and minute hands, when used in conjunction with the grooves II and slot l6 for holding thin irregular shaped parts such as setting bridges, etc.
The slots I6 are for the protection of roller jewels when holding balance arms or roller tables.
An important feature is the provision of the opening 9 through the section which allows for passing pinion and arbors as aforestated, allowing the part of the wheel to be worked on to: be gripped or held near the end of the sections thus obtaining a very positive grip. The grooves I2 are intended for holding pallet levers while straightening or renewing the guard pin or doing work on slot, lever or horn of forks.
The opening I3 through the bottom of each section allows for projection of a reamer or drill when holding an object in the end grooves II of the attachment when reaming or drilling is necessary. The cut-outs I3 allow space for aching over bridge plates or holdi mv spring valves in locked position so that the rim of the barrel can be maintained projected.
While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific terms it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a tool of the character described comprising a pair of separable jaws, a semi-cylindrical section attached to the outer end of each of the jaws, said section being provided with plane opposed surfaces each having a transverse groove therein, said sections being of hollow construction and provided with a semi-circular shaped opening in each end thereof, each of said sections being provided at its outer end with a slot merging with and extending radially with respect to the corresponding semi-circular shaped openings.
2. In a tool of the character described com-' prising a pair of separable jaws, each of said jaws being provided with a recess in the extremity thereof, a pair of semi-cylindrical sections of hollow construction each provided with a lateral foot portion at one end, one of the said semi-cylindrical sections being provided for each of the jaws, securing means for securing each of the foot portions in the recess of 2, corresponding jaw, each of the said semi-cylindrical sections being provided with a longitudinally extending slot, transversely extending grooves on the opposing faces of the sections, the remaining ends of the sections being provided with openings, said last-mentioned openings and slots serving to permit parts of the work held in the grooves between the sections to protrude exteriorally of said sections.
