UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J OIIN IV. lItEEN, OF PONTIAC, MIOII, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF IIIS RIGHT'TO BEN. M. PL'UIIB AND JAS. H. MANDEVILLE, OF WASHINGTON, D. O.
IMPROVEMENT IN RULERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 205,795, dated July 9, 1378; application filed November 28, 1877. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. GREEN, of Pontiac, in the county of Oakland, in the State of Michigan, but temporarily residing in the city of W'ashington, in the District of O0- lumbia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rulers for Drawing Ornamental Lines, which is fully described in this specification.
The principal object of this invention is to add artistic beauty to commercial papers, and to documents which, from their nature, would always be prized by the owner, by making waved or corrugated lines across the paper.
The invention consists in a ruler, or any other similar device for drawing purposes, having an indented or corrugated edge, curved or angular, for the drawing of waved lines or waved lines in series, or a succession of other than straight lines, for the ornamentation of commercial and other papers.
In the drawing, Figure 1 shows the ruler, and Fig. 2 a hand in the act of drawing waved lines. Figs. 3 and 4 are modifications.
The ruler A may be made of any material, gutta-percha being preferable. The notches B need no description, as an inspection of the drawing is all that is necessary to give any person an idea of the invention.
The modifications O D are for drawing more prominent lines than can be drawn over the notches B. Lines to I) c 17, produced by this ruler, are also shown in the drawing.
Although this invention is shown as applied to a straight ruler, it is also the intention to apply it to draftsmens curves of different forms for the purposes of ornamentation in drawin One surface or edge may be left plain, in the usual manner, if desired, and the indentations may be of various designs, as shown by the modifications, and which may be interchangeable.
The notches may continue the whole length of the ruler, or the ruler may be made with alternating distances of straight and notched edge.
It is obvious that the invention may be applied to a round ruler as well as to a fiat ruler.
The pen patented to me August 14, 1877, No. 194,038, is specially adapted for drawing lines with this ruler.
In the preparation of deeds, policies of in.- surance, and commissions in the diplomatic, civil, military, and naval branches of the government, where blank spaces need to be filled and where artistic beauty is always desirable, especially when it can be had at no loss of time, this ruler will be of service. A person can draw a waved line across the paper as quick as he can draw a straight line, and, with a few minutesof practice, he can draw waved lines in series, or he can so join two lines as to give them the appearance of a cord drawn upon the paper. He would need but a minute or two to border the fly-leaf of a book in ornamental designs, and where difi'ercut-colored inks are used such designs may be made of very attractive appearance.
In the filling up of checks or drafts a use of this ruler will prevent their alteration, for, by drawing a heavy line, the sudden motion or slipping 0f the pen causes it to penetrate the paper, making it very difficult to erase the line drawn. It would be no less difficult to erase a series of lighter lines, because it would be nearly impossible to reproduce them, or to attempt to do so, without detection.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A ruler or other similar device for drawing lines, having a notched edge, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I hereunto subscribe my name in presence of two attesting witnesses this-.Jth day of November, 1877.
J OIIN W. GREEN. [L. s.]
