Description

J. 1 QUINN Oct. 13,1936.
STOCKING Filed Dec. 50. 1950 gwuwnto'o 9m 6. fw
atbomq ?atented Oct. 13, 1936 UNlTEl) s'rm'ss PATENT @FFIQE 2 Claims.
The object of my invention is toprovide a construction of womans stocking whichcontains certain improvements in the calf or leg portion of a stocking including features of novelty in the formation of the welt forming the upper end of the leg portion.
The improvements in the welt portion consist in forming the outer ply thereof, with a frontal outer portion having a lace or open work knitted structure with the sides and back outer layers of the welt reinforced, preferably by loosening the tension of the yarn and inter-knitting therewith the reinforcing threads or knitting with a heavier yarn, preferably of a circumferential length of more than one-half the total circumference.
I also prefer to knit the inner ply of the welt of a thread or yarn which may be of a gauge similar or approximately similar to that em- 2 ployed in the leg portion of the stocking and of plain knitting, and to bring out the design of the lace-like frontal ply this inner ply of the welt may be formed of a yarn or thread insuring a contrast with the said lace effect even to providing relatively darker color than that in the lace effect, or vice versa. This contrasting distinction may extend to the employment of distinctive colors in the welt forming threads.
My invention also includes other features of improvement which, together with the above stated features, are fully described hereinafter and fully defined in the claims.
Referring to the drawing;
Fig. 1 is a side view of a womans stocking emv bodying my improvements;
Fig. 2 is a front view of the upper or leg por tion and welt; I
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the stocking looking down upon the welt end of the same; and
Fig. 4 is a view looking toward the welt and showing a vertical section thereof, taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 3, for more fully illustrating the welt structure.
The body or leg portion of the stocking may be knit in any ordinary way whether for full fashion or seamless stockings and in either case the upper end of the stocking may be formed with a deep welt of special construction which I will now describe.
The welt 3 is provided-with an outer wall formed of a narrow upper plain knitted portion followed by lace-like portions and by a thread preferably and approximately corresponding to the thread from which the body or leg portion of the stocking is knitted and at the front of this welt the threads are knitted to form any suitable lace-like design indicated at 5 including spaced lace-like portions 5 supported by plain knitted portions 2a. The several courses of the remainder of the outer wall 6 of the welt may be knitted 5 with the same threads as are employed in the lace-like portion but the knitting is somewhat looser and is reinforced by an extra reinforcing thread to provide an outer welt portion of materially greater thickness and density. The in- 10 ner wall 7 of the welt is preferably knitted of the same thread or similar thread as employed in the lace-like portion 5 of the outer wall of the welt or it may be knitted of any other gauge of thread which may form a normally knitted 15 fabric of similar character to the straight knitting 2a in the lace-like portion and the knitted structure of the leg or body portion 2, or preferably, the knitting ,of the inner wall 1 maybe of a structure intermediate of the walls 2a and 6 as will be understood by reference to Fig. 3 the lace or open work portions 5 are spaced by plain knitted portions and also bordered at top and bottom by plain knitted courses.
It will also be understood that the knitting 01 the welt portions 5, 6 and 1 may be completed and thereupon the portion first knitted may be replaced upon the needles and continued to be knitted to form the leg portion 2, beginning with the point 4 at the completion of the welt as in- 30 dicated in Fig. 4.
The inner wall 1 of the welt may be knitted with a yarn or thread of a contrasting shade or color to that employed in the lace-like portion 5 of the outer wall and which may be seen through 35 the lace-like portion and which by contrast may make the lace-like portion more distinctive.
It will also be understood that the thread of the lace-like portion 5 of the welt may be of the same character of thread as employed in the 40 body ,of the stocking and may be of a different color or shade than the reinforcing or splice thread of the outer reinforcing portion 6 of the welt.
It will still further be understood that the en- 45 tire welt may be knitted from the same thread and this thread may be the body thread of the stocking and employing a similar or difierent thread for the reinforcing or splice thread formation of the outer welt wall 6, if such splicing 5n thread be used.
The construction herein described provides a reinforcedportion at each side of the stocking at its top and to something of greater extent than the semi-circumference of the stocking so as to 55 provide an ample portion of the reinforced welt to which the supporters may be attached. I prefer to provide the reinforced welt portioni to extend entirely around the back portion of the stocking so as to come back of the knee and to provide a strong, non-stretchable welt portion capable of sustaining the forward and upward pull of the suspension straps and remove more or less the strain from the lace-like front.
I prefer in the case of a full fashion stocking to provide the marking back of the stocking body where the fashioning takes place, in that character of well-known knitting structure as provides a series of minute lace-like apertures 'as shown at 8 in Fig. 1, the said holes being formed at every fourth course in the knitting in making the oblique union 9 with the straight portions It) made at the back seam of the stocking in such full fashion hosiery.
Of course the welt construction for womens stockings described herein may be modified and changed in various ways without departing from the invention herein set forth and hereafter claimed.
I claim:
l. The herein described improvements in hosiery which consist in knitting the leg or body portion of the stocking with a welt at its upper end, the said welt formed with an outer wall reinforced by a splice thread for a distance around the back of the welt to a point at each side of the stocking in advance of the middle thereof, whereby the pulling of attached supporting means in use will cause the reinforced welt to resist stretching at the rear of the stocking, and wherein further, the outer wall of the weltat thefront portion thereof is knitted with open or lace-like structure portions and bounding intermediate plain knitted portions, the same being backed 10 by an inner wall of the welt formed by close knitting.
U 2..I'he herein described improvements in hosiery which consist in knitting the leg or body portion of the stocking with a welt at its upper end, the said welt formed with an outer wall reinforced by a splice thread for a distance around the back of the welt to a point at each side of the stocking in advance of the middle thereof, whereby the pulling of attached supporting means in use will cause the reinforced welt'to resist stretching at the rear of the stocking, and wherein further, the front portion of the outer wall of the welt is knitted as open or lace "work and the inner wall of the welt is formed of a contrastmg shade or color from the shade or color oi. the
,yarn forming the open or lace work in the front
