' This invention relates to bames for improving the cooling air flow over the cylinders of aircooled internal combustion engines and for preventing wasted air iiow in the intercylinder 5 spaces.
Objects of the invention are to provide an improved form of baille and a simplified securing means therefor which will be adaptable to conventional engines without the incorporation of special baiiie supporting means on the cylinders.
An associated object is to provide a quickly demountable attachment for the bames which will give a minimum resistance to the air iiow and to provide a system of support and baille construction which will withstand the vibration and air loads to which these parts are subject, particularly in aircraft engines.

In the drawings an adjacent pair of cylinders comprising the iinned heads lIt secured to' the finned barrels I2 in the usual way is shown as for a radial engine. It should be understood that in sir-cooled cylinders it is very undesirable to have obstrucv 'tionsto theairiiowthroughthenspaces, and itwill beseenthatifthebamesweresecured by studs these would require bosses which would blankoutsomeofthespscesandthusspoiithe air ilow and cooling effect of the adjacent ns. Itwill also be appreciated that the fabrication of such `bosses in the case `of cylinder barrels, wherein the fins are turned from the solid, would present .considerable manufacturing diiiiculty. 5 According to the present. invention the thin iianges i6 and i8 produce a minimum of obstruction to `the air iiow. In order to work on the cylinders and other engine parts it is often necessary to remove the baiiles, and it will be seen the fastening device here disclosed permits of rapid disassembly by merely unscrewing the nuts from the single stud 22. y
By referring to Fig. 2 it will be seen iliat otherwise wasted air iiow between adjacent cylinders 15 is, by means of this baille, deiiected around' to the leeward side of -the cylinders, which would get poor cooling in the absence of the baille.
It is to be understood that the above described embodiment of the invention is for the purpose' of illustration only, and various changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. In an engine having a plurality of nned 25 air-cooled cylinders, a sheet metal baiiie for controlling air iiow around a plurality of said cylinders, said baille having formed at several ofthe edges thereof overturned flanges adapted respectively for ntting engagement between the ilns of more than one of said cylinders. ,y

In an' engine having a plurality of finned air-cooled cylinders, a sheet metal baille for controlling air i'iow around n.v plurality of said cylinders, said baille having formed at several` of the edges thereof overturned flanges adapted respectively fos` ntting engagement between the iins of morethanoneofsaid eylinderaandmeansbearum sonore than one of saisi cylinders ior holding lsmid baille in assembled relation with said 40 cylinders.
3. 1n an air-cooled engine including a pair of spaced nnned cylinders, a baille spanning said cylinders on one side thereof, said baille having bearing portions foriitting engagement between adjacent iins at the yupper and lower portions of the respective cylinders, a bar spanning said cylinders lying on the opposite side thereof from said baille and having bearing portions for iitting engagement between thefins of the cylinders. and means for adjustably clamping said bar to said baille, said means lying in the intercyiinder space. y y ROLAND CHILTON.
