2 Claims. (01. 122-115) This invention relates to boilers of the type constructed for use in dry cleaning establishments where steam is generated for the purpose of being fed to the p-resse-rs, and the primary object of the invention is the provision of an unique boiler having specially formed upper and lower compartments and uniquely positioned tubes.
One of the important aims of this invention is the provision of a boiler of the character mentioned which has a plurality of tubes that are placed so that they will always be submerged in order that they will not burn out or be subject to a burning heat as a result of sediment collecting around the outside of the tubes.
Minor objects of this invention will appear during the course of the specification, referring tothe accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a vertical section through a boiler made in accordance with the invention, and,
Figure 2 is a cross section through the boiler taken on line II-II of Fig. 1.
It is important in the construction of boilers that the flue tubes thereof be kept submerged if at all possible, and also important'that sediment be kept away from around the tubes so that a drying out of one end thereof will not take place.
This invention is best embodied in relatively small boilers having a water supply pipe 4 with a valve 6 arranged so as to admit water to the boiler as desired. A drain pipe 8 having a valve ID therein extends from the lowermost end of tank l2 so as to permit the withdrawal of sediment from the said tank when cleaning the same.
A source of heat in the form of a gas burner or similar member I4 is disposed below the bottom of tank l2 so that the heat therefrom might rise upwardly through the plurality of tubes l8 which extend longitudinally through tank I2 as illustrated. These tubes terminate exteriorly of tank l2 and tend to supply a relatively large heating surface for the water within the tank.
A fuel supply pipe l8, having a valve 20 therein, is in connection with burner l4 and the entire assembly, with the exception of certain of the pipes, is housed in a case 22 that has a plurality of vents 24 formed in the bottom thereof. A flue 26 joins case 22 at the top thereof so as to permit the escape of gases from within the same.
Steam dome 28 is disposed above tank l2 and is connected thereto by a neck 30 that is relatively small in diameter so as to allow the positioning of tank l2 below dome 28 in a manner which permits heat to pass from tubes I6 upwardly against the bottom of dome 28. A pipe 32 in connection with the top of dome 28 serves as a steam draw-off. In practice, the water level indicated by the line 34 is maintained at a point substantially as shown so that a part of steam dome 28 is left empty for the collection of gen- 5 erated steam.
The bottom of tank I2 is closed by a frustoconical head having an annular, inclined wall 35, which joins the cylindrical portion of tank l2 with the bottom 38, through which passes the drain pipe 8. Tubes l6 are preferably arranged in circumscribing paths about the longitudinal central axis of tank 12 so that their lower ends terminate at the inclined annular wall 36.
In so constructing a tank for boilers of the character embodying this invention, sediment will be kept away from around the lower ends of the tubes It as it settles by gravity downwardly toward bottom 38. When sediment does settle it will have a tendency to slide downwardly along the inner inclined face of the annular, inclined wall 36 of the frusto-conical head and pass out through drain pipe 8 when valve H1 is open.
In cleaning the boiler, valve 6 is closed, valve I0 is opened, and the water within tank and dome l2 and 28 respectively is allowed to rush out through pipe 8, thus carrying any collecting sediment and insuring that no foreign matter will be left around the bottom of the tubes l6.
Obviously, when using this boiler, tubes l6 will be completely submerged and the heat, however intense, will not be liable to burn the tubes to the extent of causing renewal.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. A boiler of the character described comprising, in combination a case having heating means at the bottom thereof and a flue at the top; a tank in the lower portion of said case having an inverted frusto-conical head at the bottom thereof and a plurality of tubes, straight throughout their length, extending longitudinally through the said tank and through the heads thereof to terminate exteriorly of the said tank; a steam dome above and in axial alignment with said tank; a neck of relatively small diameter joining the proximal ends of said tank and steam dome; a drain pipe in connection with the tank at the apex of the said inverted frusto-conical head and on the axis of said tank; and a steam take-off pipe in connection with the top of said steam dome, said tubes being arranged in circumscribing paths around the said neck whereby to direct heat against the bottom of said steam dome, said heating means being a ring-shaped burner circumscribing the said drain pipe below the frustoconical head in substantial longitudinal alignment with said tubes.
2. A boiler of the character described comprising, in combination a case having heating means at the bottom thereof and a flue at the top; a tank in the lower portion of said case having an inverted frusto-conical head at the bottom thereof and a plurality of tubes, straight throughout their length, extending longitudinally through the said tank and through the heads thereof to terminate exteriorly of the said tank; a steam "serves as a water intake port and as a drainage dome above and in axial alignment with said tank; a neck of relatively small diameter joining.

a drain pipe in connection with the tank at the apex of the said inverted frusto-conical head and on the axis of said tank; and a steam take-off pipe in connection with the top of said steam dome, said tubes being arranged in circumscribing paths around the said neck whereby to direct heat against the bottom of said steam dome, said drain pipe having a valve interposed therein spaced from said tank, said tank having means for supplying water thereto comprising a water supply pipe, having a valve therein, in. connection with said drain pipe between the valve therein and said tank whereby a part of said drain pipe port.
