(Cl. 150-3) This invention relates to tobacco pouches, handbags, despatch cases and like containers of the kind which consist of a flexible pocket portion formed or provided with a cover fiap 5 forming an extension of one wall of the pocket. With pouches and cases of this character the disadvantage has been experienced that the pocket cannot easily be maintained in an open position whilst the contents thereof are in course of removal, and the objectof the present invention is to provide an improved construction and arrangement which will obviate this disadvantage.

According to the invention a pouch, handbag,

despatch case or like container of the kind above indicated is provided along either or both edges of the pocket portion with a strip of readily deformable non-resilient material of sufiicient rigidity to maintain the mouth of the pocket open for any length of time but capable of yielding and returning to normal position as the container as a whole is rolled or folded into its closed position.

Reference will now be made to the accompanying drawing which illustrates by way of example 5 a one end of which is folded over to form a pocket b by stitching along the edges 0 the pocket thus formed being preferably lined with a waterproof material. The edge at of the material which forms the opening of the pocket is folded over and a strip of lead e is fixed within it. With this arrangement when the pouch is unwrapped the mouth of the pocket can be opened by deforming the lead strip e so that the pocket will remain open during such time as the contents are all extracted.

When this operation is finished the edge of the opening is flattened to normal position shown in Fig. 1 and the pouch again folded to its inoperative position in the ordinary manner the strip of lead also serving to maintain the mouth of the' pocket closed.

Although the invention has been described above as particularly applicable to the construction of tobacco pouches, it will be obvious that it can be applied equally to other articles such, for example, as handbags and despatch-cases as well as to any leather or fabric containers which require to be held open at certain times.

I claim:

A tobacco pouch comprising a flexible pocket portion defined by opposed walls and having an open mouth, and a cover flap forming an extension of one wall of the pocket portion beyond the mouth thereof and foldable over the pocket portion, and a narrow strip of deformable but nonresilient metal fixed along the edge of the wall of the pocket portion opposite to said extension and adjacent to the mouth of the pocket portion and operative to retain the mouth of the pocket portion in open condition after the same has been opened.
