This invention relates to cases or containers for lip sticks as well as to other similar tubular or cap-like bodies; and the object of the invention is to provide an improved clip for devices of the character described consisting of a single strip or band of metal bent, folded and fashioned to form a clip which is readily mounted in connection with its support and attached thereto without the use of other fastening or securing means; a further object being to provide a clip of the class described which when attached to the support will form an ornamental knob or end portion arranged outwardly of the closed end of a cap to present a neat and finished appearance; and with these and other objects in view, the invention consists in a device of the class and for the purpose specified, which is simple in construction, efficient in use, and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which:

In Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, I have indicatedat 5 an elongated thimble-shaped cap or casing having a closed end wall 6. At 1, I have shown the holder for a lip stick 8 which is insertable into the cap or casing 5, a bead 8 being provided on the holder to limit the insertion of the holder into the casing, as will appear on a consideration of Fig. 2 of the drawing.

At I0, I have shown a clip which is preferably fashioned from an elongated strip of metal, one end portion l2 of which is bent and characterized to give predetermined curvature and ornamentation thereto. The side edges l3 at said end are of curved or irregular contour, whereas the other end portion I4 has contracted side edges so that when the clip I0 is formed, the end I 4 will present a triangular finishing or ornamental member on the outer surface of the end wall 6 of the cap 5 as is indicated in Fig. 3 of the drawing. 5

The strip is also fashioned or folded as indicated at [6 to form an inwardly extending angular portion II. which forms the upper end of the spring arm of said-clip and gives resiliency thereto. The part I! passes through an aperture I8 formed in the side wall of the body 5 adjacent the end wall 6. The stripis further bent to form the part l9 adapted to be positioned adjacent the inner surface of the side wall of the cap and again bent to form a part 20 adapted to be arranged adjacent the inner surface of the end wall 6 of the cap and again bent to form a short part 2| which extends through an aperture 22, preferably formed at one side of the'center of the cap so as to position the triangular member I 4 substantially centrally of the end wall 6 of the cap.

In initially forming or bending the strip to form the clip 10, the end portion [4 will extend in the plane of or constitute a continuation of the part 2| to facilitate the insertion through the aperture 22. It is understood that a clip is attached to the cap 5 by first passing the end portion l4, 2| through the aperture l8, working the parts 20 and I 9 also through the aperture l8, and finally passing the end l4 including the part 2| through the aperture 22, after which the end I4 is bent or folded over by the use of suitable tools, one a mandrel or cylinder fitting in the cap 5 and engaging the part 20 to hold it securely against the inner surface of the wall 6, and another, a tool or punch to fold or bend the member l4 into the position shown, after which operation, the clip Ill will be securely retained in position upon the cap. 40

In Fig. 4 of the drawing, I have shown a slight modification wherein the end portion 2| a of the clip where it projects beyond the end Wall of the cap is externally threaded to receive a threaded cap or finishingknob 23,.which will provide. a detachable mountingof the clipin connection with the cap or supporting body instead of the fixed mountingshown in'Figs. 1 to Binclusive. With this latter constructiomthe partsllla and Na of theclip maybe composed of round wire and the clip proper, not shown; will be formed by simply flattening the wire.

In Fig. 5 of the drawing, I have shown another modification wherein I have substituted for the member 14 a bead Ma which is formed by simply i heading over the protruding end of the part 2|. The bead I la may be in the form of a knob, button or rivet head or may have any desired shape and contour.

In Fig. 6 of the drawing, I have shown another modification of the structure shown in Fig. 4 which differs from Fig. 4 primarily in that the threaded part 2 la projects a greater distance beyond the end wall of the cap to provide for the mounting of a spring 24 between the end wall of the cap and the knob 23. With this construction, the clip will be tensionally mounted in connection with its support and will have in addition to the normal spring tension of the clip arm, the tension of the spring 24 which may be adjusted by adjustment of the knob 23 on the threaded extension 2la.

With my construction, Ieliminate the necessity of utilizing fastening devices apart from the unitary strip from which the clip is made, thus effect-' ing a saving in the use of such additional material or securing means. At the same time, I have avoided the complications which would be experiencedv in making the assemblage and in performing the securing operation where independent securing devices are employed. In .this connection, a comparisonv of the present structure with the structure disclosed in my prior Patent #2,005,794 of June 25, 1935, will clearly illustrate the point here made. In the disclosure in this patent, a rivet or other fastener is employed and the clip is stamped to form an opening to receive the rivet, whereas, in the present construction, the clip itself is of'simpler construction and the cost of assemblage has been materially simplified, thereby cutting down to a great degree the cost of producing the entire device, namely, the cap or other tubular body with'the clip attached thereto. The clip mounting shown in Figs. 4 and 6 of the drawing is also of simple construction and may be readily attached to the support.

While I have illustrated one use of my invention, the same type of a clip in a slightly modified design and contour may be applied to other similar articles of manufacture in connection with which clips are employed for mounting the article in connection with-a garment or other support. In the case of lip sticks, the clip serves as a means for retaining the lip stick in predetermined position in a pocketbook or a pocket formed therein so as to maintain a definite and positive position of the lip stick at all times to render the same accessible for use as well as in retaining the lip stick against accidental displacement.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: r

1. The combination with a thimble-shaped cap, the closed end wall of which is provided with an aperture and the side wall thereof with an opening adjacent said end wall, of a clip comprising a mounting end portion composed of angular parts, one of said parts being arranged adjacent theinner surface of the end wall of the cap, another of said parts extending from one end of the first named part through the aperture in said end wall, means on said part outwardly of said end wallfor retaining the clip against displacement from said cap, and the other end portion of said clip comprising a spring arm arranged outwardly of the side wall of said cap.

2. The combination with a thimble-shaped cap, the closed end wall of which is provided with an aperture and the side wall thereof with an opening adjacent said end wall, of a clip comprising a mounting end portion composed of angular parts, one of said parts being arranged adjacent the inner surface of the end wall of the cap, another of said parts extending from one end of the first named part through the aperture in said end wall, means on said part outwardly of said end wall for retaining the clip against displacement from said cap, the other end portion oi said clip comprising a spring arm arranged out-' Wardly of the side wall of said cap, and said mounting end portion including another part arranged angularly to the other end of the first named part and engaging the inner surface of the side wall of said cap.

The combination with a tubular supporting body having a closed end wall with an aperture formed therein, and the Wall of said tubular body adjacent said end wall having an aperture therein, of a clip comprising a unitary strip of metal, one end portion of said strip comprising a curved spring arm disposed outwardly of said body adjacent the end wall thereof, the other mounting end portion of said strip extending from said arm through the second named aperture into said body and including a part extending outwardly through the aperture in said end wall, and said outwardly extending part having means thereon to secure and retain the clip against displacement from said supporting body.

The combination with a tubular supporting body having a closed end wall with an aperture formed therein, and the wall of said tubular body adjacent said end wall having an aperture therein, of a clip comprising a unitary strip of metal, one end portion of said strip comprising a curved spring arm disposed outwardly of said body adjacent the end wall thereof, the other mounting end portion of said strip extending from said arm through the second named aperture into said body and including a part extending outwardly through the aperture in said end wall, and said outwardly extending part having means thereon to secure and retain the clip against displacement from said supporting body, said last named means comprising a knob in threaded engagement with said outwardly extending part.

5. The combination with a tubular supporting body having a closed end wall with an aperture formed therein, and the wall of said tubular body adjacent said end wall having an aperture therein, of a clip comprising a unitary strip of metal, one end portion of said strip comprising a curved spring arm disposed outwardly of said body adjacent the end wall thereof, the other mounting end portion of said strip extending from said arm through the second named aperture into said body and through the aperture in said end wall, and said outwardly extending part having means thereon to secure and retain the clip against displacement from said supporting body, said last named means comprising a head or knob on said outwardly extendin part and arranged in spaced relation to said end wall and a spring on said part between the knob and end wall.
