"D H 2 L 122% Patented Sept. 15, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE This invention relates to a non-refillable container of drum-like-form and has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a container of the class referred to with new and novel means at its filling and discharge points to prevent the refilling of the container after the contents of the latter have been discharged.
Further objects of the invention are to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a container of the class referred to which is simple in its con struction and arrangement, strong, durable, compact, thoroughly efficient for the purpose intended thereby, readily assembled and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in View, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter specifically described and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein is 29 shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and. modifications may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.

The drum indicated at I is formed of sheet metal and its body 8, preferably at its center, is provided with a bung-hole or filling opening 9. The drum 1 is also provided in one of its heads I0 with a discharge opening I I in close proximity to body 8. The heads Ill are inset with respect to the ends of body 8.
Welded to or otherwise secured to the wall of bung-hole 9 and extending into body 8 is the outer end of a closable and lockable intake element I2 for body 8. The element I2 includes an outer stationary cylinder I3 having a closed inner end or bottom I i, an open outer end I5 and a circumferentially extending opening I6 spaced from the ends I4, I5. The side edges I! of opening I6 are squared. The inner face of cylinder I3, at the upper portion thereof, is threaded as at IS. The upper face of the closed inner end I4 of cylinder I3 is provided with an eccentrically disposed pocket I9. The end or bottom I4 is of greater thickness than the body of the cylinder and it is formed with an axial opening 20. The element I2 also includes an inner revoluble cylinder 2|, mounted in, of less height than and of an outer diameter to provide a tight fit against the inner face of cylinder I3. The fit is such, however, to enable the revolving of cylinder 2| relative to cylinder I3 by the use of a tool. The cylinder 2| has an open upper end 22, a closed bottom 23 and a circumferentially extending opening 24 spaced at its top from its upper end 22 andhaving its bottom wall provided by bottom 23. The opening 24 is of the same area as opening I6. The side walls 2& of opening 24 are squared. The upper end 22 of cylinder 2| is notched, as at 24", to receive a tool for revolving it in a direction to have a part of the body thereof to close opening I3. Normally the walls of opening 24 register with the walls of opening I6 to form a passage as shown in Figures 2 and 4 to enable the filling of the container. After the container has been filled to the extent desired, the cylinder 2| is revolved to the position shown in Figures 3 and 5 to close element I2. The bottom 23 is of greater thickness than that of the body of cylinder 2| and also than that of the inner end of bottom I4 of cylinder I3. The lower face of bottom 23 of cylinder 2| has an eccentrically disposed pocket 25 carrying a spring controlled locking member 26 which bears against the upper face of bottom I4 of cylinder I3 and is of greater thickness than the depth of pocket I 9. The controlling spring for member 26 is indicated at 21 and is interposed between member 26 and the base of pocket 25. When cylinder 2| is shifted from the position shown in Figures 2 and 3, the member 26 rides against the upper face of bottom I4 until pockets i9, 25 register, at this point member 26 drops into and extends above pocket I 9 as shown in Figure 3. When member 26 is in the position shown in Figure 3, it coacts with the walls of pockets I9, 25 and locks the cylinders I3, 2| together, in the position shown in Figures 3 and 5 to close the passage for the purpose of preventing the shifting of the cylinders relatively to each other to open element I2 to prevent refilling. The bottom 23 is formed with an axial opening 28 which aligns with opening 26. A pivot 29 extends through aligning openings 20, 28 and is headed, as at 30 at each end whereby the cylinders I3, 2| are connected to gether, but at the same time permitting cylinder 2| being revolved relative to cylinder I3 when the cylinders are not locked together by member 26. A peripherally threaded closure plug, cap or disc, not shown is employed for closing the outer end of cylinder I3 and which is to threadedly engage with the threads l8. This cap, disc or plug is to be of known construction.
Welded or otherwise secured to the wall of opening H, as well as extending inwardly into body 8 is a valve controlled element or structure 3| which functions to permit of the discharge of the contents and to prevent the refilling of the drum from the discharge opening thereof. The element 3| includes a cylinder 32 open at each end and formed at its outer end with an inwardly extending annular flange 33 having its free edge threaded, as at 34. The cylinder 32 at the inner end of its inner face is rabbeted, as at 35, and has also formed integral with its inner face a series of spaced radially disposed ribs 36 positioned adjacent to and in spaced relation with respect to the inner face of flange 33. The ribs 36 merge into the edge of an arrestor 31 in the form of a disc having a concaved rear face 31*. The ribs 36 have their inner ends curved, as at 31* and with the are forming a flush continuation of the face 3'! of arrest/or 31. The face of arrestor 31 and rear ends of ribs constitute a stop for arresting the outward movement of a floating ball valve 38 arranged within and of less diameter than the inner diameter of cylinder 32. The ribs 36 are of a length to have their rear ends positioned at a point forwardly of the transverse median of cylinder 32. The forward'end of ribs 36 are of the same width as that of the body of flange 33. Seated against the edges of the rabbet 35 and against the rear end edge 40 of cylinder 32 is an annulus 4| formed with a flange 42 on its outer edge 43. The flange 42 seats against edge 40. The outer edge 43 of annulus 4| bears against the longitudinally disposed edge of the rabbet 35. The inner or forward face of annulus 4| bears against the horizontally disposed edge of the rabbet 35. The annulus 4| extends across the inner end of cylinder 32 and is welded or otherwise se-. cured to the latter. The inner diameter of annulus 4| is less than the diameter of the floating ball valve 38 and has its inner edge beveled, as at 44, to provide a seat for floating ball valve 38. There is associated with the cylinder 32 a peripherally threaded closure cap, plug or disc 45 for normally closing element 3| when filling the drum through element l2. The cap, plug or disc 45 is removed when the contents of the container are to be discharged. This cap, plug or disc 45 detachably engages the threads of flange 33. The threads 34 of the flange 33 are also employed for connecting a discharge pipe 46 to element 3| when cap 45 is removed. The floating ball valve 38 when abutting its seat prevents the refilling cf the drum or container through element 3|. The ribs 36 arrest the opening movement of the floating ball valve 38 and when the latter is off its seat, the contents of the container pass around the floating ball valve 38, around the edge of arrestor 31 and over the outer ends of ribs 36. The arrestor 31 in connection with the ribs 36 prevents the entrance of a wire or other means for the purpose of holding the floating valve 38 off its seat to permit of the refilling of the container.
What I claim is:
1. A non-refillable container comprising a headed drum like body formed with a bung-hole, an intake element anchored to the wall of the bung-hole, extending into said body and having a normally open intake passage for permitting of the initial filling of the drum, said element having interiorly arranged coacting parts for closing said passage and means for locking said coacting parts in passage closing position to prevent the refilling of the drum after the initial filling has been completed, the said locking means of said element consisting of a stationary pocket, 9. shiftable pocket for register with the stationary pocket, and a locking member carried by the shiftable pocket for extension into the stationary pocket when the pockets are in registry.
2. A non-refillable container comprising a headed drum like body formed with a bung-hole, an intake element anchored to the wall of the bung-hole, extending into said body and having a normally open intake passage for permitting of the initial filling of the drum, said element having interiorly arranged coacting parts for closing said passage and means for locking said coacting parts in passage closing position to prevent the refilling of the drum after the initial filling has been completed, the said coacting parts consisting of a pair of concentrically arranged cylinders formed with openings for registry to form said passage, said cylinders being open at their outer ends, one of said cylinders being revoluble relative to the other for moving a part thereof to close the opening in the other cylinder.
