Application October 19, 1934, Serial No. 749,123
1 Claim.
The present invention relates to a wrench having the advantages of the well known Stillson wrench and providing the advantage of quick adjustability.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of a wrench of this nature which is exceedingly simple in its construction, inexpensive to manufacture, easy tomanipulate, thoroughly efiicient and reliable in use and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of. parts as will hereinafter be more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrench embodying the features of my invention.
Figures 2, 3 and 4 are sectional views taken substantially on the lines 22, 33 and 4-4 respectively of Figure 1,
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Figure 2.
Figure 6 is a detail elevation of the handle and fixed jaw showing a pawl therein.
Figure 7 is a similar view taken at right angles to that shown in Figure 6, and
Figure 8 is a perspective view of the casing.
Referring to the drawings in detail it will be seen that numeral 5 denotes an elongated handle having a fixed jaw 6 on one end thereof. Numeral 1 denotes the movable jaw from which projects shank 8 one edge of which is provided with ratchet teeth 9. The adjacent edge of the handle 5 is provided with a recess l and a pocket H communicating with the recess. A pawl I2 is pivoted in the recess on a pin I4 and is urged outwardly of. the recess by a spring l extending into the pocket ll. Numeral i6 denotes a hollow casing slidable on the shank 8 and is in the form of a U-shaped strap including side plates I1 and I8 and a cross plate I9. Plates I! and [8 have in their upper corners remote from the cross plate [9 registering openings 20, 20 and in the bottom corners arcuate registering slots 2| and the plate H has intermediate its opening 20 and slot 2| an arcuate slot 22. The slots 2|, 2| and 22 are concentrically disposed with respect to the openings 20. The plates I! and I8 straddle the upper portion of the handle and the pin l4 extends into the openings 20 so that the casing is rockably mounted. A pin 23 extends through the handle into the slots 2| to limit the rocking movement of the casing. A pin 25 projects from the pawl through the opening 22 so that the pawl may be manually released from the ratchet teeth 9 when it is desired to shift the jaw 'l away from the jaw 6. Suitable indicia may be provided .on one face of the shank 8 so that the jaws may be preadjusted with respect to the pipe before being engaged therewith.
The recess in is confined between the sides of. the handle. The confining sides of the handle provide the support for the pin l4 which forms the pivot on which both the pawl l2 and the casing l6 rock.
It is thought that the construction, operation, utility and advantages of this invention will now be quite apparent to those skilled in this art without a more detailed description thereof.
The present embodiment of the invention has been described in considerable detail merely for the purposes of exemplification since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description.
It will be apparent that changes in the details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
A wrench of the Stillson type comprising an elongated handle having a fixed jaw thereon and formed with a recess extending inwardly from one edge and confined between the sides of the handle, said fixed jaw further formed with a pocket in the inner wall of the recess and registering therewith, a movable jaw, a shank on the movable jaw formed with ratchet teeth on the edge confronting the edge of the handle wherein is formed the recess, a pawl rockable in the recess and formed with teeth on the outer end engageable with teeth on the shank, a spring seated in the pocket at one end and bearing on the pawl at the other end to retain teeth on the latter in projected engagement with the teeth on the shank of the movable jaw, a yoke member embracing the shank on the movable jaw to permit the shank to slide relative to the handle, a pin supported in the sides of the handle that confines the recess thereby spanning the recess and projecting outwardly on each side of the handle, the pawl rockable on the portion of the pin spanning the recess and the yoke member rockable on the portion of the pin projecting from the handle,
to the pivot pin, the innermost slot receiving the pin on the pawl to limit the rocking, movement thereof and the outermost slot receiving the second pin to limit the rocking movement of. the
yoke member.
