' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NAPOLEON DU BRUL, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN ClGAR-PACKER PRE SSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 205,065, dated June 18, 1878; application filed June 6, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NAPOLEON DU BRUL,
of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Cigar-Packer Press, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to an improved apparatus for facilitating the compressure of cigars within an ordinary cigar-box, for the purpose of enabling the lid to be easily closed. The customary appliance for this purpose is a simple screw-press, which, on account of its slow motion, unavoidably consumes much time to operate.
Retaining the screw for the purposes of adjustment to diverse sizes of boxes, I provide a movable platen, sliding vertically in suitable guides and elevated by a cam-lever, that combines the several advantages of rapid operation, gradual increase of force on approaching the final squeeze, self-lock of the platen, and, finally, a quick release, which enables the speedy withdrawal of the packed box.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a packer embodying my invention, the platen being shown in its depressed condition. Fig. 2 is an axial section of the same, the platen being shown in its elevated position. I
From a base, A, rise two standards, B B, whose tops are united by a transom, O, whose screw-threaded orifice 0 contains the screwstem D of an adjustable head or follower, E. The screw D is furnished at its upper end with a lever or handle, F.
The active instrument of compression is a pair of cam-levers, G G,which, being pivoted to the frame, bears, by its cams g g, on the under side of lugs H, which project from a platen, I. The cam-levers are united at their extremities by a rod, K, which does duty as ahandle.
An indentation, h, that receives the cam g at the position of extreme elevation of the platen, serves to lock the parts to such position until relieved by retraction of the handle K.
Lugs L, which project from the base A, serve to hold the lever-cam to the position shown in Fig. 2.
Wings J upon the ends of the platen, occupyin g openings 1) in the standards, operate to hold and guide the platen to its proper horizontality at every point of elevation.
In practice, a slab of wood which fits loosely within the box is placed on top of the cigars, and the box thus charged and covered is then inserted in the press.
In the preferred form of my invention here illustrated the base, standards, and transom are of one cast piece, and the frame-standards serve the purpose of guiding the sliding platen, thereby avoiding the necessity of an y addition al complicated pieces or extra work to fit them up, and making a very cheap and at the same time solid and durable press, and by that construction I am enabled to have the cam lever to work centrally on the vertically novable platen, and to avoid any uneven pressure or strain to the press, as when the cam-lever works more on one side than on the other.
I claim as new and of my invention- 1. The combination of cam-lever G G and vertically-workin g platen I with screw D, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. Ina cigar-packer, the combination, with the frame A B O and screw-adjusted head E, of platen I, operated by cam-lever G G, substantially as set forth.
3. In a cigar-packer, the combination, with a head, E, capable of vertical adjustment by means of screw D, situated above it, and of a guiding and supporting frame, A B O, of the platen I, having the indented lugs or projections H, to coact with the cam-levers G, in the manner designated.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
NAPOLEON DU BRUL.
