Description

y 1936- w. J. DRUMMOND 2,047,862
DETACHABLE EDGE FOR PLOWSHARES Filed March 12, 1936 lower or forward edge of 1 the share.
Patented July 14, 1936 UiTED -STATEs PATENT OFFICE n 'r onABLE EDGE ron PLOWSHARES v William pmmmo Seattle, Wash. ,Appli cation March 12, 19st, Serial m. 68,517 6"Claims; (01.97 425) This inventionrelatesito detachable edges for plow shares and particularly to .thoseedges which are formed to provide flangesdefining a relatively deep V-shaped recess along the upper edge of the detachable edgemember, which receives the An object of my invention is-toprovide anedge of this character having resilient gripping tongues onvone or more of the, innerfaces of, the flanges, which tongues extend toward the ,edge; of the share when the detachable; edge member is; in place, the tongues accommodating themselves to the irregularitiesor inequalities on the face of the share and frictionally resisting any detachment of the edge member.
Another object is to form the'share with recesses preferably on the under face of the share and provide on a flange of the edge member spring tongues engaging the said recesses and acting in the manner of pawls to prevent accidental detachment of the edge member from the share.
Other objects will appear in the course of the following description.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a plow share with my improved edge member applied thereto;
Figure 2 is an enlarged section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a view of the edge member detached from the share and constructed as shown in Fi ures 1 and 2;
Figure 4 is a plan view of the form of edge shown in Figures 1, 2, and 3;
Figure 5 is a sectional view through the edge of a share and with a modified form of edge member applied thereto;
Figure 6 is a bottom plan view of the edge member shown in Figure 5, and a portion of the share with which the edge member coacts;
Figure 7 is a fragmentary section through an edge member showing a metallic plate welded in place between the sections.
Referring to the drawing and particularly Figure 3, I designates an edge member adapted to be applied to a share A. This edge member is formed to provide at its rear end two spaced flanges II.
and I2 adapted to receive and flt over the edge of the share A. These flanges II and I2 are stamped out to provide inwardly projecting resilient tongues I3, these tongues being directed at an angle to the forward edge of the edge member In and in the direction of the line of flow of the earth. The edge member ID is capable of being forced upon the forward edge of the share and the tongues will accommodate themselves to any irregularities or inequalities in the opposite faces of the share and will bind frictionally upon the share so that the edgemember, while detachably connected to the share, will be held firmly in place.
' The structure shown in Figure 3 is particularly 1 adapted for ordinary shares, but in Figures and 6, 1 show a share A which is formed adjacent its edge with a series of recesses I4, these recesses being inclined upward and toward the forward edge of the share and being preferably disposed upon thelower face of theshare A. Coacting with. this form of share is an edge member designated generally I5, which is also formed with opposed flanges I6 and H, the lowermost flange I1 being formed with a series of spring tongues I8 stamped out from the flange and which are adapted to engage within the recesses I4 and which act in the manner of pawls snapping into place and preventing the accidental detachment of the share. It will be seen from Figure 6 that the edge member I5, and this is also true of the edge member I0, has a form which is complementary to the form of the edge of the share so as to fit the outline of the edge of the share.
While an edge may be rolled in any conventional manner to provide the flanges II with the gripping tongues I3, for instance, or the gripping tongues I8, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the edge member may be manifestly formed in two sections welded together, and if desired a thin strip of high carbon steel, as indicated in Fig. '7, may be disposed between the welded surfaces, this strip being designated 2 I, said strip extending out to the cutting edge 20.
Where an edge is placed upon an old share, that is, a share not formed with the recesses I4, then the gripping tongues I3, which may be as numerous as desired, will hold the edge in place frictionally and the more of these gripping tongues there are provided, the better. Where, however, the share A is made with the recesses I4, as shown in Figures 5 and 6, it will not be necessary that there shall be as many recesses as there are tongues I8, as those tongues which are coincident with the recesses I4 will spring into position as shown in Figure 5, but those tongues on the edge member which are not coincident with any recess will simply bear frictionally against the surface of the share and increase the holding power of the edge member on the share.
The edge, when once put on a share, should remain until worn out as it is unnecessary to sharpen the edges, because of the fact that these edges wear at top and bottom of the cutting edge and thus being self -sharpening, but if it be desired to remove aworn edge, that is, an edge which has passed its usefulness, then the edge may be removed by springing the whole flange as, for instance, the lower flange I! in Figure 5, off the I one of the flanges being formed with a plurality of inwardly projecting resilient tongues adapted is in place. 7

- 4.;The combination with a plow share having a plurality of upwardly and forwardly inclined f lowermost flange having upwardly and forwardly 5 extending resilient tongues adapted to engage in said recesses.
