Description

Patented July 14, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE coMPOsITIoN FOR ABSORBING VIBRATION AND SOUND John M. Byers, Flint, Mich.
4 Claims.
O manner as hereinafter set forth a plastic composition of the class referred to for absorbing vibrations of matter and of sound.
The composition consists of a mass of comminuted or shredded resilient particles of poly- 15 merized vegetable oil such as for example tung oil,
and a binder medium therefor mixed therewith. Each of said particles may be porous. The said binder medium is to possess an adhesive characteristic, such as emulsified asphalt. The binder 20 medium retains the particles in definite position.
One example of producing the composition consists in polymerizing a body of tung oil by boiling it until it reaches a temperature of approximately 540 degrees Fahr., and holding the body at such 5 temperature until it becomes a resilient or spongy jell. The jelled body is then comminuted or shredded by any suitable means into resilient particles of the desired size. After the jelled body has been comminuted or shredded, there is mixed therewith a binder possessing an adhesive characteristic for the purpose of retaining the particles in definite position.
Another example of producing the composition consists in polymerizing a body of tung oil by boiling it until it reaches a temperature of approximately 540 degrees Fahr. and holding the body at such temperature until it becomes a resilient or spongy jell. The jelled body is then made porous by submitting it to a temperature within its flash point. The porous jelled body is then cozmninuted or shredded by any suitable means into resilient porous particles of the desired size. After the jelled porous body has been comminuted or shredded, there is mixed therewith a binder possessing an adhesive characteristic for the purpose of retaining the particles in definite position.
The resultant composition when used as a facing may, if desired, have its outer face coated by a suitable coloring.
The composition may be spread upon the structure with which it is used in connection with or molded to any desired contour, and then applied.
The composition as aforesaid when in use, will function to absorb vibrations of matter and of sound.
What I claim is:
1. An absorbing composition comprising a plastic body formed of a mass of resilient particles of polymerized tung oil and a binder therefor possessing an adhesive characteristic for retaining the particles in definite position, said binder being an asphaltum varnish.
2. An absorbing composition comprising a plastic body formed of a mass of resilient particles of polymerized tung oil and a binder therefor possessing an adhesive characteristic for retaining the particles in definite position, said binder being emulsified asphaltum.
3. An absorbing composition comprising a plastic body formed of a mass of resilient porous particles of polymerized tung oil and a binder therefor possessing an adhesive characteristic for retaining the particles in definite position, said binder being an asphaltum varnish.
4. An absorbing composition comprising a plastic body formed of a mass of resilient porous particles of polymerized tung oil and a binder therefor possessing an adhesive characteristic for retaining the particles in definite position, said binder being emulsified asphaltum.
