also be more comfortable to the wearer while the 4 .curl is becoming permanent; to provide an improved dependable curl-holding attachment for a curling device, and to secure these and other objects and advantages and yet maintain simplicity and low cost of manufacture.
Referring to the accompanying drawing,
which illustrates what is at present deemed to be a preferred embodiment of the invention,
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the device, showing the same in an extended condition; in a folded condition in dotted lines, and in part section on line I-I of Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 isy a. top plan view of the device shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the device is shown as consisting of a cylindrical body 5 which is open at one end, where it is provided at o one side with a flat flexible extension 6, said extension being provided at its end portion with a finger hold 6a, and is closed at its outer end, where it is furnished with a. formed head 1 united to said body by a neck portion 8. The body 5 5 may be made of metalor of rubber, but said extension 6 should be of flexible material, desirably rubber; and if the body is made of rubber said extension may be made integral therewith.
. A hair pin like retaining spring l0 is projected 40 intoy the op'en end of the body 5, as shown, to afford a means for holding the end portion of a` lock of hair preparatory to imparting a twisting movement to said body for the purpose of wind- 1935, Serial No. 27,732
ying the hair -thereabout to form the curl. The
outer end portion of the extension 6 has a series of spaced holes Il therethrough toengage the head 'i after the manner Yof eyelets, thus to hold the formed curl 'Il in place. The width of said 5 extension 6 is greater than the diameter of the body 5, thus adding to the strength of said extension and compensating for the material removed therefrom in cutting out the apertures l I.
The outer limb of the U-shaped spring Ill con'- i0 stitutes a spring arm that clamps against the end portion of the lock of hair to be curled. The means for supporting, this spring arm may be varied, and also other .changes of construction made, within the scope of the claims, without vdeparting from the spirit of the invention. The free end of the external arm of said spring Il) is de ected outwardly at I2 in order to facilitate the insertion of a lock of hair thereunder.
I claim: A
1. A curling device consisting of a cylindrical body having an open end and of a suitable size to have curls of hair formed therearound, a spring 'member to grip hair between itself and said body, and a iiexible curl retaining at extension 25 projecting from said body to engage the curl externally after it has been formed around said body, the width of said extension being greater than the diameter 'of said body.
2. A curling device consisting of a cylindrical body having an open end andof a suitable size to have curls of hair formed therearound, a spring member to grip hair between itself and said body, and a exible curl retaining flat extension projecting from the open end of said body, said extension having an aperture through it and said body having at the end thereof opposite to said extension a head over which the apertured portion of said extension may be slipped, the width of said extension being greater 40 i than the diameter of said body.
