4 Claims.
The invention relates to a miter box for use in cutting metal sash and the like, which is formed either from sheet metal or by extruded metal to form strips of the desired cross section. One ob- 5; ject of the invention is to provide a cheap, simple construction having improved means for clamping the work in position and adapted to permit two strips to be mitered at the same time. Further objects are to provide improved means for 10. setting the device to the desired angle of cut so that the adjustment may be made accurately and quickly, and for guiding the hack saw in a positive manner during the cutting operation. One embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the 15. accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the device. Fig. 2 is a section on the line II-II of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end View of a part of the construction. Fig. 4 is an enlarged partial section on the line IVIV 20 of Fig. 1. Figs. 5 and'6 are detail views showing the blocks which are utilized in clamping the work in position. And Figs. 7 and 8 are detail I views of the setting gauge which is employed in adjusting the device. 25 The base member of the device on which the I work holder or deck is mounted for rotary'ad? justment comprises a 'pair of plates I and. 2 in the form of a cross and on this base member are mounted the guides for the frame of the hack saw. These guides consist of the pairs of rectangular tubes 3, 3 and 4, 4 welded at their lower ends to the plate I. Adapted to fit snuglybetween these pairs of posts is the frame of the hack saw. The frame consists of a top member in the form of a rectangular tube'and a pair of bottom members 6, I also in the form of rectangular tubes, secured together by means of the plates lb and la welded to the ends of the tubes, and by the rectangular tubes 8 and 8a welded at their 40 ends to the tubes 5, 6 and 'The plate 1a is bent, as indicated at 9, in order toprovide a handle, the rear portion of which carries the rounded wooden'strips ID to fit the hand of the operator. The hack saw II is secured at its front end to the frame by means of a pin l2 and at its other end is attached to a block |3 by means of the pin I4, the block |3 fitting slidably in the frame member This block is adjusted to the rear to tighten the saw by means of the rod |5 which extends tothe rear through the plate 1a and carries on its threaded rear end the wing nut l6. Stops for limiting the downward movement of the saw frame are provided in the form of the members I! and I8 lying between the pairs of tubes 3, 3 and 4, 4 and welded thereto, such stops 33 providedat its centerwith a slot 34 in'alignbeing provided at their forward edges with saw cuts |9 which act as a guide for the gauge used in connection with the apparatus, as later described. l
The work holder or deck whichlis mountedfor rotary adjustment on the base member comprises a plate having a hub 2| at its center and the flanges 22 and 23 on each side. of the hub. Ex.- tending tothe right from the flange 23 isfthe arc-shaped extension 24 provided .onits edge 10 with the graduations 25 (Fig. 1) to, show the def gree-of rotary adjustment of the deck with ref spect to the base member. Extendingthrough the hub 2| of the deck is the hollow stud or pivot 26 which is welded to the base member and has threaded ,to its upper end the securing nutj21 forholding the base member and deok in assembled relation, but at the same time'permit-i ting rotary adjustment of the deck with respect to the base member. The opening 28 through the stud 26 is topermit of the attachment tothe deck ofthe setting gauge, later described in de tail. The deck is secured in itsvariouspositions of rotary adjustment by means of the clamping plate 29 through which, extends a stud so welded at its lower end in the plate I of the base mem her. ,The upper end of the stud is threaded and carries the wing nut 3|. The end of theplamp:v ing plate extends between the guide postsll, '4 and over the graduated edge of the arc-shaped extension 24, as indicated in Fig. 2. The end of the clampingplate is provided with an indicating mark 32, preferably formed'bymaking a. Saw out in the end of the plate. This registers with the graduations 25. and indicates the degree of 5 angular adjustment of the deck with res'pectto the base member. f
Extending across the plate 2!! is avertical rib ment with the guide spaces between the posts 3, 3 andll, 4, the purpose of the slot beingto permit the movement of the hack saw downward without interference with the rib. 'In the operation of cutting strips, such as the strip A, which constitutes the work, such strips are clamped in the angle between the rib and the deck. Secured to the plate 2!! by means of bolts is, ajwoo d sheathing 36. This sheathing stops short of the flanges 22 and 23 at, each edge, as indicated in Figs. 2 and 4, and is cutout so as to form the L-shaped slots 31. The purpose of these slots isto provide for the engagement .of the'lower edges of the work clampingbars 38 shown in Fig. 2. The lower end of the bar 38 fits intothe slot 31, while its upper end 40' hooks over the upper edge of'the rib 33. Oneor more of these clamping bars may be used and they are applied by placin them at the ends of the rib as and which rests upon the sheathing 36 with" its vertislot 31, ,and then' slipping them laterally longi tudinally of the rib tothe desired position. In combination in a miter box, a base member provided with vertical guide means for a saw, a work supporting deck mounted on the base for adjustment about a vertical axis, a vertical rib extending across the deck in line with said Vertical axis with a slot at its central portion in line with such axis and with said guide means, means for clamping the work to be cut in the angle between the deck and rib, a vertical recess at the axis of rotation of the deck, and a setting gauge comprising a sleeve, a pointer slidable through the sleeve and provided at its inner end with a part at right angles thereto adapted to fit into said recess, a pair of arms on opposite sides of the sleeve pivoted at their inner ends to the inner end of the sleeve, a cross head slidably mounted on the sleeve, a pair of links pivoted to the cross head at their inner ends and to the arms at their outer ends, and means for locking the cross head in adjusted position on the sleeve. 10
