8 Claims.
This invention relates to electric flat-irons or sad-irons, and more particularly to a device of this nature having athin sole plate which may be readilystamped from sheet metal, and which will permit a rapid and even distribution of heat to the article being ironed.
, A furtherobject is to provide a device of the above nature which will be relatively simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to assemble and manipulate; compact, ornamental in appearance, and very efiicient and durable in use.
With these and other objects in view there have been illustrated on the accompanying drawing two forms in which the invention may be conveniently embodied in practice.

Referring now to the drawing in which like reference numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral III in- 30 dicates a sole plate employed in the first form of the invention, said sole plate being relatively thin and adapted to be manufactured from sheet metal by stamping in a press. The sole plate I8 is provided in its upper surface, near its ends,
35 with a pair or circular recesses H- and I2, which are preferably machined out to about one-half the thickness of said sole plate leaving a pair of upstanding annular ribs I3 and I4 which are initially formed vertical, as shown in Fig. 2.
40 The sole plate It! is adapted to be connected to aweighted filler block l5 by spinning or staking over the ribs l3 and I4 inwardly upon the beveled annular surfaces of the fiat-bottomed heads I6 and I! of a pair of vertical screws 18 45 and 19, said screws being securely held in the locked position shown in Fig. 1 by means of a pair of nuts 20 and 2| screwed upon the upper ends thereof. The filler block I5 is provided with a central vertical aperture 22 opening into a longi- 50 tudinal bottom chamber 23, within which 'is located a thermostatic control unit 24 having a pair of exterior wires 25 and 26 depending from a pair or binding posts 21 and 21a. The wires 25-and 2a are connected at their lower ends to an electrical 55 heating unit 21b provided with upper and lower insulating sheets 28 and 28, preferably of mica, and said unit is adapted to be held tightly between the iiller block l5 and the sole plate In by the screws [8 and I8, mentioned above.
Heating current is adapted to be supplied to 5 said heating unit in any suitable manner, as by a pair of conductor wires 30 and ,3l connected by binding posts 32 to a pair of inclined terminal pins 33 adapted to receive an electric socket plug not shown. The terminal pins are adapted to [10 be supported in position by a Z-shaped bracket member 34 having an apertured base 35 surrounding the screw I8 and held tightly in a recess 35a in the filler block l5 by the nut 2|.
The thermostatic unit 24 is adapted to be 15 manually controlled by means of a rotatable lever 36 carried on a vertical adjusting shaft 36a. The lever 36 has a raised handle 31 at one end and a pointer 38 at its other end, said pointer being adapted to pass over a dial plate mounted 20 on top of a hollow cover plate 48. The base of the cover plate 40 is adapted to be held tightly against the sole plate In by means of a pair of vertical screws 4| and 42 passing through apertures in an upstanding handle bracket 43 and 25 adapted to screw into a pair of tapped sockets 44 and 45 formed in said filler block I 5, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.

shown in Figs. 1 and 2 with the'exception that provision is made 01' a pair of tapped bushings 46 and 41 having lower flanges 48 and 49 which are located within the central recesses of a sole plate SIL- -said flanges 48 and 49 being secured 35,
to said sole plate 50 by spinning 'or staking the annular ribs l3 and I4 inwardly, as before. The tapped bushings 48 and 41 are adapted to receive a pair of screws 5| and 52 having slotted upper heads 53 and 54 located in recesses formed in the upper surface of the filler block I5.
While there have been disclosed in this specification two forms in which the invention may be embodied, it is to be understood that these forms are shown for the purpose of illustration only, 5 I
and that the invention is not to be limited to the specific disclosures but' may be modified and embodied in various other forms without depart-v ing from its spirit. In short, the invention includes all the modifications and embodiments 5 coming within the scope of the following claims. Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new, and for which it is desired to secure Letters Patent, is:
1. In a sad-iron, a filler block, a thin sheet 5 of said bolts to lock said sole plate upon said sad-iron.
2. In a sad-iron having a filler block, a thin stamped metal sole plate having an upstanding annular rib, said rib being surrounded by an annular recess and being flush with the surface of said sole plate, a screw bolt having its head seated in said rib and located within said filler block, a
* nut for fastening said screw bolt to said filler block, said annular rib being bent over on the head of said screw bolt to lock said filler block and sole plate together.
3. In a sad-iron having a filler block, a thin stamped metal sole plate provided with a recess in its upper surface an upstanding annular rib located in said recess and being initially flush with the surface of said sole plate, a screw bolt having a beveled head with a flat base seated in said rib and connected to said filler block, a nut for fastening said screw bolt to said filler block, said annular rib being bent over on the head of said screw bolt to lock said filler block and sole plate together.
4. In a sad-iron, a filler block, a thin metal sole plate having a recessed section, means connected to said filler block and having a. head seated in said recess, and means integral with said sole plate in said recess spaced from the edge thereof initially flush with the surface of said sole plate and bent down over said head for connecting said filler block to said sole plate.

In a sad-iron, a'flller block, athin metal sole plate having a recessed section extending about one-half way through the thickness thereof,' means connected to said filler block and having a head seated in said recess, and means integral with said sole plate in said recess spaced from the edge thereof initially flush with the surface of said sole plate and bent down over said head for connecting said filler block to said sole plate.
6. In a sad-iron, a filler block', a thin metal sole plate having a recessed section, means connected to said filler block and having a. head seated in said recess, and an annular rib in said recess initially flush with the surface of said sole plate and bent down over said head for connecting said filler block to said sole plate, said rib being spaced from the edge of said recess to permit the insertion of a bending tool.
7. In a sad-iron having a filler block, a thin metal sole plate having a recessed section, means connected to said filler block and having a beveled head seated in said recess, and means integral with said sole plate in said recess spaced from the edge thereof initially flush with the surface of said sole plate and bent down over said head for connecting said filler block to said sole plate.
8. In a sad-iron, a filler block, a thin metal sole plate having a recessed section for receiving the head of a member for attaching said filler block to said sole plate, and an annular rib initially flush with the surface of said sole plate and integral therewith, and bent down over said head to lock it upon said sole plate.
