'Ihis invention relates to a photographic iilm printing apparatus.
The object of the invention is the production of a motion picture film printing apparatus, wherewith one motion picture lm can be printed from another with either a reduction or enlargement in size.
The second object of the invention is the production of a printing apparatus for motion picture films having pictures and photographic sound records thereon, wherewith the nlm produced has lphotographed thereon the pictures and sound record in the same relation to each other as the pictures and the sound record of the lm from which the photographs are made.
The third object of the invention is the production of a motion picture illm printing Vapparatus for photographing from standard 35 mm. motion picture films, 16 mm. lms, with or without a sound record; so that the sin'all film produced is adapted to exhibit the usual 1440 pictures per minute.
The fourth object of the invention is the production of apparatus for photographing a picture lm with both pictures and a photographic sound record of a reduced size from a lm of standard size, and in which the sound produced when the reduced lm is projected, will equal the pitch and sequence of the sound record on the original ilm 'Ihe fth object of the invention is the production of an apparatus for photographing a picture illm with only the picture or only the sound record from a film having both thereon.
The sixth object of the invention is the production of apparatus for producing from a standard motion picture lm having a series of pictures and a synchronized sound record thereon,
a motion picture film of reduced dimensions hav-- ing photographed thereon the pictures and sound vrecord of the standard lnr, to reproduce the sound characteristics of the standard iilm when projecting from the reduced lm, at the equivalent sound pitch speed of the standard lm.
In the accompanying drawings, Fig. 1 represents a side elevation partly broken away of an exempliilcation'of the photographic illm printing apparatus. The photographic lnr printing apparatus in this exemplication, is indicated to comprise the table 20 supported on four legs 2|, two o1' which latter are shown. A main supporting wall is indicated at 25, which has integral therewith the vertical extension 26 and the inclined extension 21. A journal hub 28 extends from the front face of the extension 26 and a journal hub 29 extends from the front face of the extension 21. A journal hub 30 extends from the rear face of the extension 21, which is axially in line with the hub 29. A journal hub 33 extends from the rear face of the supporting wall 25.
Brackets 43 and 44 connect the table 20 and the supporting wall 25.
A supplemental supporting wall is indicated at 45, which is spaced to the rear of the main supporting wall 25, and is held in position by the spacer bolts 4,6.
` A dark chamber is indicated in its entirety by the numeral 50, and comprises the bottom wall 5|, the top wall 52, the side walls 53, rear wall 54 and the hinged front cover 55. v'I'he rear wall 54 is fastened to the wall 25. Journal hubs 56 and 51 extend from the wall 54.
A lamp house 58 is secured to the main supporting wall and is indicated with a source of light, in this instance the electric light bulb 59.
A condenser lens 6I is provided for the lamp house 58.
A lm guide plate is designated in its entirety by the numeral 62 and a similar parallel illm guide plate is designated in its entirety by the numeral l63.
The tllm guide plate 62 comprises the supporting member 64. having the flange 65, which latter is fastened to the wall 54 of the dark chamber 50. The member 64 has formed thereon the horizontal light opening or slot 66. Longitudinal spacing and guide strips 61 are positioned over the front face of the member 54. A stationary light platel 69 is positioned between the `face of' the member 64 and the strips 61, one of which latter has indicated thereon the mark 611). A vertically adjustable light plate 1li is positioned below the plate 69 and is also located between the face of the member 64 and the strips 81. A scale 1I is indicated on the plate 10. Clamping plates 12 bear on the guide strips 61. Screws 13 and 14 clamp the strips 61 and the plates 69 and 10 in place. To locate the plate 19 in diderent positions to vary the width of the opening between it and the plate 69, the screws 14 are unscrewed and the plate 10 can be located in a required po-y sition, with the assistance of the scale 1l and the mark 61b.
Horizontally adjustable cross light plates 15 and 16 are positioned below the plates 69 and 10 .a scale 88 is indicated on the 2" and in the slight depression 11 in the member 88. A scale 18 is indicated on the plate 15, and plate 18. The said. scales 18 and 88 eoacting with the outer edges of the plates 12 provide means to locate the plates 15 and 18 in proper position.
Screws 82 and 83 respectively bear on and clasp the plates 15 and 18 in operative position.
A pressure plate 85 has the light opening 88 in which is secured a translucent plate of glass 81. Wings 88 extend from the pressure plate 85 and have extending therefrom the pins 89. A block 98 is adjustably supported on the shank of the screw 9| which latter is in threaded engagement with the member 84 vof the guide nlm plate 82. A vertical plate 92 extends from the block 98 and has fastened thereto the two angle shaped arms 93. The pins 89 extend through openings in the arms 93. Springs 94 bear he-g tween the wings 88 and the arms 93. Projections or strips 81a, similar to 81 extend from the sides of the inner face of 85.
The film guide plate 83 struction as the iilm guide plate 82 with the exception that the light plates 89, 18, 15, and 18 are omitted. In the drawings of the lm guide plate 83, the pressure plate 85, the supporting member 84 and the pins 89 are indicated with their numerals. The presser plate 85 has an opening similar to 88, but which is not covered is the same in conwith a plate of glass.
A light tube 95 is located between and has its ends connected to the supporting members 84 of the film guide plates 82 and 83. A lens casing 98 is slidably located in the light tube 95 and at its lower portion has formed therewith therack teeth 91. A spindle 98 is journaled in the wall of the tube 95 and has fastened thereto the spur gear 99 which meshes with the teeth 81. An operating wheel |88 is fastened to the spindle 88.
A projecting lens |8| is supported in the lens casing 88.
A diaphragm support |82 encircles the light tube 85 and has adjustably extending therethrough the diaphragms |83. The diaphragms extend through slots in the tube 95. The diaphragms |83 are clamped in different .positions bymeans of the screws |84. The diaphragms |83 may have scales indicated thereon to enable them to be located in proper position, to obtain the proper light opening between their inner edges.
An electric motor |88 is fastened to theinclined supporting block |81 extending from the table 28. A shaft |88 vhas one end coupled to the armature" shaft of the electric motor |88, and has its other end journaled in the journal bracket |88 extending from the wall 45. Worms ||8 and are fastened to the shaft |88. A shaft ||2 is journaled in the walls 25 and 45 and at one end thereof is fastened the worm wheel ||3, which meshes with the worm ||8 and at its other end is fastened the film sprocket wheel ||4. A spur gear ||5 is fastened to the shaft n2. An idler pinion ||8 is fastened to the shaft ||1 journaled in the walls 25 and 45 and meshes with the spur gear ||5. A pinion ||8 is fastened to the shaft ||8 journaled in the walls 25 and 45. A hlm sprocket wheel |28 is fastened to the shaft ||8. An arm |2| has one end adjustable fastened to the wall 25 and in its other end is journaled the film presser roller |22. An arm |23 has one end adjustable fastened to the wall 25 the pressure plate apegarse and in its other end is journaled the film presser roller E24. A spur gear 25 is fastened to the shaft |28 journaled in the walls 25 and 45 andmeshes with the pnions Il'a` and |I8. A shaft |28 is journaled in thevwall 45 'and the journal hub 28 and has fastened thereto the pinion |29, which meshes with the spur gear |25. The shaft |28 has also fastened thereto at one end the film sprocket wheel |38, and to its other end is fastened the sprocket chain wheel |3|. A shaft |33 is journaled in the journal hubs 29 and 38 and at one end thereof is fastened the sprocket chain wheel |34. A sprocket chain. |35 connects the sprocket chain wheels |3| and |34. A take up iilm reel |38 is adjustably supported on the shaft '|33. A cap |31 is pinned to the shaft |33, and a helical spring |38 encireles the shaft |33 and bears between thereel |38 and the cap |31. In the hub 28 is fastened the shaft |45, which has journaled thereon a feed lm' reel |48 similar to |38. iilrnguide rollers |41 and |48 extend from the wall 25. Velvet covered normally stationary cleaning rollers |49 and |58 are adjustably supported on pivots 5| that extend from the wall 25.
An arm |52 has one end adjustably fastened to the wall 25 and has pivoted thereto the film presser rollers |53 and |54.
A standard 35 mm. negative motion picture nlm in this instance is indicated in its entirety at |58, and has indicated thereon as usual a plurality of pictures |51 and the photographic light sound record |58. The film |58 leads from the feed reel |48, under the film sprocket wheel |38, between the cleaning rollers |49, |58, then through the film guide plate 83. From the film guide plate 83, the film |58 bears under the film sprocket wheel ||4, from which latter it leads over the lm sprocket wheel |28. The said standard film |58 next bears under the film guide rollers |41 and |48 and finally is wound up on the take up reel |38.
A-shaft is journaled in the walls 25 and 45 and has fastened thereto the spin' gear 88. A shaft |81 has its ends journaled in the walls 25 and 45 and has fastened thereto the pinion |88, which meshes with the spur gear |88'. A film sprocket wheel |18 is fastened to the shaft |81. An arm |12 has one end adjustably fastened to the wall 54, and in the other end of th: arm |12 is journaled the lnr presser roller A pair of velvet covered normally stationary cleaning rollers the pins |18 and |11 extending from the wall 54. The latter rollers as well as the rollers |49 and |88-can be located in different angular positions on their pins. A shaft |88 is journaled in the walls 24, 25, and 54. A worm wheel |8| is fastened to one end of the shaft |88 and is in mesh with the-worm A pinion |88 and the nlm sprocket wheel |98 are also fastened to the shaft |88. A shaft |9| is journaled in the walls 25, 45 and 54 and has fastened thereto the pinion |92, which is in mesh with the spur gear |88 and the pinion |88. A Shaft |94 is journaled in the walls 25, 45, and 54 and has fastened thereto the pinion |95, the film sprocket wheel |98, and the sprocket chain wheel |91. An
arm 288 is adjustably fastened to the wall 54.
|14 and |15V are supported on Vand 53. The sprocket chain wheel 2|2 is fastened to one end of the shaft 2|3. 'A sprocket chain 2|3 connects the sprocket chain wheels 2|2 and |91. A take upilim ree12|3 is supported on the shaft 2I3. A cap 223 is fastened to one end of the shaft 2|3, and a helical spring 22| surrounds the shaft 2|3 and bears between said cap 220 and the reel 2I3. A shaft 223 extends from the hub 51 and supports vthe film feed reel 224. An unexposed 16 mm. motion picture film is indicated at 225, which leads from the feed reel 224, passes over the film sprocket wheel and then between the cleaning rollers |14 'and |15. The nlm 225 Athen passes upwardly through the film guide plate 62 from the latter over th`e film sprocket wheel |30; The film 225 then passes under the nlm sprocket wheel |36, and over the roller 208 and under the roller 201 to the takeup reel 2|3.
Refen'ing to Figs. l and'll an electric switch 230 and a pair of rheostats 234 and 235 are fastened to the table 20. A pair of wires 236, and 231 lead from a source of electric current. 'Ihe wire 231 has the switch 230 connected thereto. An electric plug is shown at 2 4! and 'a second electric plug 24| is detachably connected thereto. 'I'he wires 236 and 231 lead into the plug 240 and respectively connect with the wiresv 243 and 244. Ihe rheostat 234 'is in connection with the wire 243. A wire 245 leads from'the rheostat 234', to the electric motor |06. Wires '246 and 241 lead from the plug 240. The wire 246 leadsto the electric light bulb 53. The wirev 241 j oins with the rheostat 235, and a wire 243 leads from the rheostat 235 to the electric light bulb 53. e
To operate the photographicfiim printing apparatus, the motion picture films are positioned in said apparatus as already described. The diaphragms |03 are adjusted to produce the required light opening in the light tube 95. If both the pictures |51 and7 the photographic light sound record |53 are to b e photographed on the unexposed fllm 225, the adjustable light plate 10 is moved in position to vobtaintlie required opening between the upper edge of saidplate 10 and the lower edge of the stationary light plate 63 to secure the required width'if the light Vslot or opening. through thefiillm guidev plate 62. The adinstable plates and 'n are positioned outwardly so as not to obstruct the light. The rheostat V243 for the electric motor circuit is first kept in its off position 'so Y that the electric motor |05 remains stationary. The switch-230 is next closed and the` rheostat 2 35 is to energize the light circuit of the apparatus.. The operator next focuses the photographic appurtenances of the apparatus bylccating the lenses 0| in proper position. Next the rheostat 234 is adjusted and the electric motor is started. The films |56 and 225 will then move in the directions indicated by the arrows in Fig. 1. The nlm 225 continuously moves upwardly in a direction opposite to the direction of the continuously moving 111m |53, which latter moves downwardly. The opposite directions of the movements of the films are necessary because the pictures and the light sound record of the film |56 are inverted by the lenses. If it is required to only photograph the light sound record |58 on the film 225, the light sound plate 15 is positioned in place to prevent the photographing ofthe pictures |51, and if only the pictures are to be photographed on the film 225 the light plate 16 is positioned in place to prevent photographing of the light sound record |53.
It will be noted that the speed. transmitted by the 'shaft |03 and the transmission gearing for 5 the unexposed nlm 225, transmits to said unexposed film a less speed of travel in an interval time-than is transmitted to the standard size nlm |53, by the said shaft |33 and the transmission gearing for said standard lm in the same interval of time. c
The opening 66 in the support 6 4 for the standard size film |56 may be larger thanthe opening or the slot'56 in the support 64 for the unexposed dimensionally reduced nlm 225. The translucent plate of glass 31 in the pressure plate 35 for the reduced lm, provides a means for properly focusing the projecting lens |0I.
Various modifications -may be made in the invention and the present exempliiication is to be taken as illustrative and not limitativethereof.
Having described our invention vwhat we desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim is:
1. In a photographic film printing apparatus the combination of e iight tube, .means te project beams of light through said tube, a film guide plate at the entrance end o f the tube and zt illm guide plate at the exit end of said tube, the fllm guide plate at the entranceend of the tube comprising a supportingmember having a light slot, a. presser plate having a light slot coacting with said supporting member, the illm guide plate at the exit end of the light tube comprising a supporting member having-'alight 35 slot, a presser plate having a light slot coacting with the latter supporting member, a translucent plate covering the slot inthe latter presser plate, a stationary light plate fastened to the latter supporting member and extending partly over the lightslot therein, a vertically adjustable light plate on the latter supporting member coacting with the first light plate thereon, horizontally adjustable cross plates on ,the latter supporting member coacting with the light slot therein, means to continuously move a standard size picture nlm through the lm guide plate at the entrance end of the light tuba-means to continuously move an unexposed film of less than standard size through the film guide plate. at the Veint end of the light tube at a speed varying from the speed of travel of the standard sizej-i'llm, a condenser lens spaced from the' inlet end of the tube, a projecting lense within' the lightjtube adjacent to its exit end and means to project beams of light through said lenses. In a photographic lm printing apparati the combination of a light tube, means to project beams of light through said tube, a illm guide plate at the entrance end'of the tube and e. mm guide plete1 at theexit en d'er said tube, 60 the film guide plate at the entrance end -ofthe tube comprising a supportingmember having a light slot, a presser plate having a' light slot, coacting with said supporting member, the film guide -plate at the exit end `of the lighttube 65 comprising a supporting member having a light slot,a presser plate having a light slot coacting with the latter supporting member, a stationary light plate fastened to the latter 'supporting member and extending partly over the light slot 70 therein, a vertical adjustable light plate onthe latter supporting member coacting with the other light plate thereof, means to continuouslyA move a picture nlm through the illm guide plate at-the entrance end of the light tube, means to continuously move an unexposed nlm of a size at variance with the other nlm through the nlm guide plate at the exit end of the light tube at a speed varying from the speed of travel of the nlm at the entrance end of the tube, a condenser lens spaced from the inlet end of the tube and a projecting lens within the light tube adjacent to its exit end.
3. In an apparatus of the character described the combination of a nlm guide plate for a standard negative motion picture nlm, pictures and a sound record on said standard film, a second nlm guide plate for an unexposed picture nlm of a size at variance with the negative nlm, the nlm guide plate for the negative standard nlm comprising a supporting member having a light slot, a presser plate having a light slot coacting with said supporting member, the nlm-guide plate for the unexposed nlm comprising a supporting member .having a light slot, a presser plate'having a light slot coacting with the latter supporting member, a stationary light plate bearing on the supporting member of the nlm guide plate for the unexposed nlm and extending somewhat over the light slot therein, a vertical adjustable light plate bearing on the latter supporting member coacting with the stationary light plate, .a scale indicated on the adjustable light plate, vertical guide strips bearing upon each of said light plates, one of said strips having a mark thereon coacting with the scale on the adjustable light plate, to properly adjust the distance between the edges of the light plates to obtain the required width of light opening therethrough, meansto move the standard motion picture nlm through its nlm guide plate, means to move the unexposed nlm through its nlm guide plate at a speed varying from the speed of travel of the standard nlm and in a direction opposite thereto. horizontally adjustable cross light plates bearing on the supporting member of the nlm guide plate for the unexposed nlm and extending below the other light plates thereon, a scale on each of the horizontally adjustable cross light plates coacting with an edge of the vertical strip of the supporting member adjacent thereto, to cover or uncover either the pictures or the sound record on the standard motion picture nlm and means to photograph the exposed portion of the standard nlm on the unexposed nlm, the sound record if photographed adapted to produce the same sound and pitch as that adapted to be produced with the standard nlm.
l 4. In an apparatus of the character described the combination of a nlm guide plate for a standard negative motion picture nlm, pictures and a sound record on said standard nlm, a second nlm guide plate for an unexposed nlm of a size at variance with the negative nlm, the nlm guide plate for the negative standard nlm comprising a supporting member having a light slot, a presser plate having a light slot coacting with its supporting member, the nlm guide plate for the unexposed nlm comprising a supporting member having a light slot, a presser plate having a light slot coacting Vwith the latter supporting member, a translucent plate supported in the latter presser plate over its light slot, means to vary the width and the length of the light opening through the supporting member and plate of the unexposed nlm, means to simultaneously move the nlms in opposite directions and means to photograph the exposed portion of the standard nlm comprising either both its pictures and l sound record or either alone on the unexposed nlm, witha sound record adapted to produce the same sound and pitch as adapted to be produced with the standard nlm.
5. In an apparatus of the charactery described the combination of a nlm guide plate Afor a standard negative motion picture nlm, pictures and a sound record on said nlm, a second nlm guide plate for an exposed nlm of a size at variance with the negative nlm, the nlm guide plate for the negative standard nlm comprising a supporting member having a light slot, a. presser plate having a light slot coacting with its supporting member, the nlm guide plate for the unexposed nlm comprising a supporting member having a light slot, a presser plate having a light slot coacting with the latter supporting member, a stationary light plate bearing on the supporting member of the nlm guide plate for the unexposed nlm and extending somewhat over the light slot therein, a vertical adjustable light plate bearing on the latter supporting member coacting with the stationary -light plate, vertical guide strips bearing upon each of said light plates, horizontally adjustable cross light plates bearing in a depressed portion of the supporting member of the unexposed nlm and below the other light plates of said supporting member, means to simultaneously move the nlms in opposite directions, cleaning rollers contacting with said standard nlm before entering its nlm guide plate, cleaning rollers contacting with the unexposed nlm before entering its nlm guide plate and means to photograph the pictures and sound record of the standard nlm on the unexposed nlm.
6. In a photographic nlm printing apparatus the combination of a table, a main supporting wall extending from the table, an electric motor supported in an inclined position above said table, a shaft having one end coupled to the armature shaft of the motor, a worm fastened to said shaft, a supplemental wall spaced from the main supporting wall, spacer bolts interposed between said walls, a second shaft journaled in said walls, a worm wheel fastened to one end of the second shaft and in mesh with said worm, a nlm sprocket wheel fastened to the other end of the second shaft, a spur gear fastened to the second shaft between its worm wheel and nlm sprocket wheels, a third shaft journaled in said walls. an idler pinion fastened to the third shaft in mesh with thespur gear on the second shaft, a fourth shaft journaled in said walls, a pinion fastened to one end ofthe fourth shaft, a nlm sprocket wheel fastened to the other end of the fourth shaft, a nfth shaft journaled in said walls, a spur gear fastened to the nfth shaft, the' latter spur gear in mesh with said idler pinion and with the pinion of the fourth shaft, a sixth shaft journaled in said walls, a pinion fastened to thel sixth shaft in mesh with the spur gear on the nfth shaft, a sprocket chain wheel fastened to the sixth shaft, a seventh shaft journaled in said walls, a sprocket chain wheel fastened to the seventh shaft, a sprocket chain connecting the sprocket chain wheels, a take up nlm reel fastened to the seventh shaft for a motion picture nlm and a feed nlm reel journaled to an extension` of said main supporting wall, said picture nlm leading from said feed reel, contacting with said nlm sprocket wheels and wound up on said take up nlm reel. v
