' APPARATUS FOR MAKING SHOE SOLES Filed April 10, 1955 Patented May 19, 1936 UNITED STATES APPARATUS FOR MAKING SHOE. SOLES William J. De Witt and Erle Floyd Beers, Auburn, N. Y., assignors to Dun Deer Sandals, Inc., Auburn, N. Y., a corporation of Delaware Application April 10,1933, Serial No. 665,296
Claims.
This invention relates to an improvement in apparatus for making shoe soles and is a further development of the invention disclosed in Patent No. 1,843,753 dated February 2, 1932, and has for its primary object to provide apparatus for blanking and preparing shoe soles for assembly with the uppers thereof.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a press by which the soles are blanked out from a sheet of material;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged front elevation of the bed portion of such press;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blanking die;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view taken along the line 4-4 of Fig. 3; and
Fig. 5 is a sectional View of an element of the press.
The press 20 comprises a bolster 2| and a ram 22. The ram is raised and lowered in any well known manner by the shaft 23 having a driving pulley 24 mounted thereon. Supported upon the arms of the bolster 2| is. a blanking die 25 comprising a bed plate 26 and a flange 21 projecting upwardly from the plate. The flange 2! is continuous and of a contour substantially similar to that of the sole to be blanked or dinked from the leather or other material. Enclosed by the flange 21 is a base plate 28 secured to the bed plate 26 by screws 29 and further held against relative movement over the bed plate by dowels 30. Mounted on and projecting upwardly from the base plate are slitting and slotting knives 3| and perforating knives 32. The knives shown only in Fig. 4 form no part of the present invention and may be omitted or constructed and arranged, in any suitable manner as shown, for example, in the above mentioned patent. Surrounding the base. plate 28 is a continuous shearing knife 33 held in contact with the edge of the base plate by set screws 34.
A stripper plate 35 normally rests upon the base plate 28 and is free to reciprocate within the shearing knife 33 toward and away from the base plate. Freely reciprocable in holes 36 through the base plate 28 and bed plate 26 are rods 31 mounted at their lower ends upon a platen 38. The upper ends of the rods contact with the stripper plate and are preferably secured thereto. Posts 39 secured at their upper ends to the arms of the bolster 2| support at their lower ends a unit 40 comprising an upper plate 4| and a lower plate 42. The plates 4| and 42 are expanded intermediate their ends to form a chamber divided, by a diaphragm 44, clamped between the plates 4| and 42, into an upper compartment 45 and a lower compartment 46. Resting upon the diaphragm 44 in the upper compartment 45 is a plunger 41 the stem 48 of which passes through an opening 49 in the plate 4|. The stem 48 terminates at 5 its upper end in a block 55 on which the platen 38 rests. The rods 39 pass through openings in the ends of the platen 38 and thus position it upon the block 55. Air is supplied to the compartment 46 through a hose 5| from any desired source. As here shown a slide valve unit 52 of the well known type controls the supply of air. The air is conducted from the source, not shown, through a pipe 53 to the valve unit 52 and from the unit to the compartment 46 through the hose 5|. The operation of the valve unit is controlled by a sliding piston 54 which is reciprocated by a link 55 actuated by a cam 56 on the shaft 23. The link 55 depends from a lever 51 pivoted at one end upon an anchor 58 and provided at the other end with a roller which travels in a cam path 59. Through the mechanism thus described the stripper plate 35 is actuated to remove the cut sole from the die plate as will appear from the following description of the operation of the machine.
The ram 22 forces the sheet of material against the knives of the blanking die and the cut sole rests upon the stripper plate 35. As the ram 22 is raised the cam 56 causes the link 55 to descend shifting the piston 54 and allowing air to pass through the unit 52 and hose 5| into compartment 46. The pressure of the air acts upon the diaphragm causing it to raise the plunger 41 and through the block 50, the platen 38 and rods 31 5 to actuate the stripper plate thus ejecting the cut sole from the die. As the shaft continues to rotate. the parts again resume the positions shown in the drawing and the operation thus described is repeated.
While one such embodiment of the invention has been shown and described it will be understood that the invention is not limited thereto and that other embodiments may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the following claims.
