Description

H. 0. H-OLBROOK. Device for Marking Plug-Tobacco.
No. 204,042. Patented My 21,

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY c. HOLBROOK, OF'LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 204,04 2, dated May 21, 1878; application filed March 27,1878.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HARRY O. HOLBROOK, of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson, and in the State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Marking and Molding Plug-Tobacco; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making'a part of this specification.
My invention consists of a device for markin g plug-tobacco, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to construct and usethe same, describe it, referring to the annexed drawing, in which 7 Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of the plates used. Fig. 2 is a plan view, Fig. 3. an edge view,
and Fig. 4 a crosssection, of the same.
My device for marking plug-tobacco consists of a metallic plate, A, upon the upper surface of which is a series of alternatingraised panels, Z, and depressions d. The plate is of a size corresponding with the usual size of a tobacco plug, and the form or shape of the raised panels thereon is immaterial, as they may be of diamond form, as seen in the drawings, or they may be of any form or shape to suit the fancy or taste of the user.
Each raised panel has letters or marks as sunk therein. These letters may be the name or the initials of the manufacturer, the brand of tobacco, the trade-mark, or any symbol or words desired, but in each and every case must be sunken in the panels or raised portions of the plate.
In using my invention, one plate constructed as above is used to mark one plug of tobacco. The wrapped plug of tobacco is preferably placed on the plates, as above described, previously put in the cells of the mold, and then pressed in the usual manner. The panels or reliefs on the plates sink into the body of the I will proceedto more fully plugs and leave their impress. As the impressions are made in the plug by the panels Z, the sunken letters or marks in the same also leave raised letters or marks in the alternate sunken panels of the plug, so that when the plug is passed through the finishing process these raised letters or marks, being beneath the main surface of the plug, are not obliterated by the pressure given to finish the same. plate A, the impression causes the tobacco plug to assume diiferent shades of color-that is to say, the panels will of necessity assume a darker shade than that part of the plug not impressed.
In some instances I' may attach the plates to the plunger, which works in the mold-cells; or they may be attached to the mold-board or placed loosely in the cells, as described. In
either instance the result is the same.
It is preferable that the plates with their alternate raised panels and depressions may be used in the molds instead of the compress, for thereason that the great pressure given to the plugs is in the molds, and thus a greater and firmer impression can be had in the marking of the tobacco plugs, and the marking is done at the same time that the plug receives its color.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A plate for marking plu -tobacco, provided with a series of raised panels of any shape and a series of alternating depressions, the raised panels being provided with sunken letters, marks, or symbols, whereby the tobacco-plug is formed with a series of depressions, Within which are raised letters, marks, or symbols, asv set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereimto set my hand this 25th day of February, 1878.
HARRY O. HOLBROOK.
