This invention relates to a metal sealing cap for road parting strips.
The object of the invention is to provide a more eflicient sealing cap and one requiring less metal.
5 Other objects will appear hereafter in connection with the description of the more specific preferred embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the cap as applied to a parting strip.

Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the cap and parting strip.
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 3 showing a modified form of cap.
The sealing cap is formed from a single sheet of metal such as thin gauge copper, and comprises a central expansible head I, a body 2 consisting of downwardly extending portions on opposite sides of the head, and side flanges 3 for embedding in the concrete slabs of the roadway.
The head I consists of a flattened bead of a width suitable for assisting the troweling of a groove 4 of proper'width in the concrete as illustrated in Fig. 3 for receiving mastic material. By making the bead flat instead of round, it is less apt to become bent or dented in a manner tending to crack the metal.
The body 2 of the cap consists of two spaced side members, one on each side of the head. The members are formed into a narrow neck 5 at the 35 top where they, join the'head and diverge downwardly in an outwardly curved path for a predetermined distance. At the bottom the members merge into the outwardly extending horizontal 4o flanges 3.
The outwardly extending flanges 3 have longitudinal slots 6 therein at intervals spaced longitudinaly of the cap and the metal between the slots and the side edges of the flanges is bent outwardly and twisted through an angle of 90 to provide vertical flanges I which are embedded in the concrete on either side of the cap. By providing the openings 6 behind each vertical flange I, the concrete is allowed to completely embed the flanges 1 to secure the flanges 3 against sliding in the concrete.
The cap fits onto a parting strip 8 which may be of any suitable construction and may have suitable dowel bars 9 forinterlocking the sections or concrete. The strip 8 extends upwardly between the body members 2 and has projections l formed on opposite sides at a predetermined distance from the top to support the cap in a manner preventing contact of the upper edge of strip 8 with theupper part of head I, and to prevent tipping of the cap to one side when concrete is being poured. I
In operation, the sealing cap is intended to pre- 'vent seapage of water through the roadway at the parting line and where the sections of concrete tend to separate for any reason, the flanges l 10 insure that the flanges 3 move with the respective sections while the head I and body members 2 flex. The curvature of the body members 2 allows the members to straighten slightly during flexing thereby relieving the head I and flanges 3 of excessive stress.
The modified construction shown in Fig. 5 has the body portions 2' curved inwardly at the bottom to approximate contact with the parting strip 8. The flanges l are at an oblique angle instead of being vertical as shown in the preferred construction.
Various embodiments may be .employed within the scope of the accompanying claims.
I claim:
1. In combination with a plurality of sections of concrete or the like, having their edges in juxtaposition, a strip extending longitudinally therebetween for sealing the joint, said strip comprising a central expansible section and having its side edges extending into and embedded in the respective sections of concrete, said side edge portions having vertically extending flanges at the edges. and openingsbehind said flanges for receiving concrete.
2. In combination with a plurality of sections of concrete or the like, having their edges in juxtaposition, a strip extending longitudinally therebetween for sealing the joint; said strip com- 4 prising a central expansible section and having its side edges extending into and embedded in the respective sections of concrete, said side edge portions having obliquely extending flanges at the edges and openings behind said flanges for receiving concrete.
3. In combination with a plurality of sections of concrete or the like, having their edges in juxtaposition, a strip extending longitudinally therebetween for sealing the joint, said strip comprising a central expansible section and having its side edges extending into and embedded in the respective sections of concrete, said side edge portions being slotted longitudinally and having the metal between the slots and the outer 66 "edges bent into vertical flanges for securing ing a central expansible section and having itsside edges extending into and embedded in the respective sections of concrete, said side edge portions being slotted longitudinally and having the metal between the slots and the outer edges bent outwardly and twisted from the her izontal plane.
5. In combination with a plurality of sections of concrete or the like, having their edges in juxtaposition, a sealing strip extending longi-.

6. In combination with a plurality of sections of concrete or the like, having their edges in juxtaposition, a sealing strip extending longitudinally therebetween with its respective side edges embedded therein, said strip comprising a cen-v tral expansible bead at the top flattened to provide a bottom 0! suitable width for a groove between the sections, and downwardlyextending curved body members diverging outwardly and joining the bead on either side'to the embedded edge portions, said edge portions being slotted longitudinallyand having the metal between the slots and the outer edges 'bent outwardly and twisted into a non-horizontal plane forming flanges for securing thesame in the concrete.
7. In combination with a plurality of sections of concrete orthe like,having their edges in juxtaposition, a sealing strip extending longitudinally therebetween with its respective side edges embedded therein, said strip comprising a central expansible head at the top and downwardly extending body members joining the bead at each side to the embedded edgetportions, said body members diverging outwardly from said bead 60' to said edge portions and a parting strip for said sections of concrete having its upper edge extending between said body members and having means below its upper edge for engaging said sealing strip and locating the same.
8.- In combination with a plurality of sections of concrete or the like, having their edges in juxtaposition, a sealing strip extending longitudinally therebetween with its respective side edges embedded therein, said strip comprising a closed flexible central portion having downwardly extending body members joining the same on either side to the embedded. edge portions, said body members diverging outwardly toward said edge portions and being curved to allow independent expansion of the same and a parting strip for said sections of concrete having its upper edge extending between said body members and-havingmeans below its upper edge for engaging said sealing strip and locating the same.

In combination with a plurality of sections of concrete or the like, having their edges in jux- I taposition, a sealing strip extending longitudi-- nally therebetween with its respective side edges embedded therein, said strip comprising a central expansible bead at the top flattened to provide a bottom oi. suitable width for a groove between the sections, and downwardly extending curved body members diverging outwardly and joining the bead on either side to the embedded edge portions, said edge'portionsbeing slotted longitudinally and having the metal between the slots and the outer edges bent outwardly and; twisted into a non-horizontal plane forming flanges for securing the same in'the concrete and a, parting strip for said sections of concrete having its upper edge extending between said body members and having means below its upper edge for engaging said sealing strip and locating the same.
10. In combination with a plurality 01' sections of concrete or the like, having their edges in juxtaposition, a sealing strip extending longitudinally therebetween with its respective side edges embedded therein, said strip comprising a central expansible bead at the top flattened to provide 40 a bottom of suitable width for a groove between the sections, and downwardly extending curved body members diverging outwardly and joining the bead on either side to the embedded edge portions, said edge portions being slotted longitudinally and having the metal between the slots ,and the outer edges bent outwardly and twisted into a non-horizontal plane forming flanges for securing the same in the concrete and a parting strip for said sections of concrete having its 'uppenedge extending between said body members and having flanges on either side for supporting said sealing strip.
