Patented Apr. 21, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE NECKTIE HOLDER Application March 27, 1935, Serial No. 13,361 18 Claims. (01. 24-49) This invention relates to necktie holders. One object of the invention is to provide a necktie holder including an ornamental clasp and a secondary ornamental member detachably associated with the clasp so that secondary members of different character or design may be interchangeably associated with the clasp or the clasp itself employed for necktie holding or other purposes.

Another object of the invention resides in the provision of an ornamental necktie holding means comprising a member having a flexible element secured at its opposite ends to the same, the said member being constructed for detachable connection with a suitable garment engaging clasp, thereby providing separate units or assemblies, one an ornamental clasp for necktie holding or other purposes and the other an ornamental assembly which may be readily detachably applied to the clasp for necktie holding purposes.

A still further object of the present invention resides in the provision of an ornamental necktie holder embodying a clasp including a clasping element and a front bar adapted to'receive or bear an ornamental design and a tubular member telescoping the bar and slidable on and off the latter and completely concealing the front bar when employed thereon or adjustable thereon for one use of the invention, said tubular mem-' ber being retained on the bar by frictional contact therewith or by the pressure of said clasping element and presenting a front face adapted to receive or bear an ornamental design, and a flexible chain or other flexible member having its opposite ends secured to the tubular member and carried by the latter and being removable from the tubular member to enable the design of the latter to be displayed across the front of the necktie, and the tubular member and the flexible member being removable as a unit from the clasp bar to permit of the use of the clasp alone and for the display of the design of the front bar, whereby a three-in-one necktie holder is provided.

It is still further designed to provide a necktie holder embodying a clasp and a separate assembly or unit including a member slidable on and ofi the clasp as a unit and at its ends carrying a draped flexible member so that by a sliding adjustment of said member on the clasp the position of the draped flexible member may be adjusted laterally of the wearers shirt to provide for a proper suspension of the flexible member with relation to the normal vertical position of the necktie and thereby insure against holding the neckte in a slightly inclined plane.

In another embodiment of the invention, the detachable ornamental member may have an interlocking frictional connection with the front bar of the clasp whereby to more positively hold the detachable member in adjusted positions on the bar and in which embodiment the flexible member may be adjusted as regards degree of drape thereof.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction, within the scope'of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawing, the reference character A indicates, generally, an ornamental clasp consisting, in this instance, of a front bar I provided with a bent portion 2 having a bifurcation 3, providing a support for a clasping element 4, pivoted in the bifurcation 3 in any suitable manner, as by. means of a suitable pivot 5. The clasping element 4 is preferably spring actuated through the instrumentality of a suitable pressure exerting means 6. The clasping element 4 is preferably provided with two spaced segmental shaped toothed flanges 1 arranged for clasping cooperation with the rear face of the bar I over a relatively small area of the bar I. This particular type of clasp forms no part of the present invention. Any other type of clasp in which a front bar is employed may be adapted for the present purposes but I prefer in one embodiment of the invention to employ the particular type of clasp illustrated and described and the front bar may be plain or ornamented in any suitable manner either intermediate the ends or throughout the length thereof, as shown. This type of clasp is highly serviceable as a necktie clasp or holder.

In one embodiment of necktie holder, an ornamental assembly is adapted to be associated with the clasp A, in this instance, a member 8 with which is associated an ornamental chain or other flexible member 8. The flexible member 9 is preferably of a length greater. than the length of the bar I or the member 8 and it is preferably detachably secured to the member 8. To this end, the member 8 is shown as in the form of an openended sleeve or other form of tubular member or slide adapted to have slidable movement 1ongitudinally on and off of the front bar I and preferably in such contact therewith as to hold the same frictionally on the bar to prevent relative longitudinal movement of the member 8 and bar I.

The front face of the telescoping or other form of slide 8 may be plain or superficially or otherwise ornamented intermediate its ends or throughout its length, and in any event, presenting preferably an ornamental front face appearance different from the ornamental appearance of the bar I of the clasp. This'difference in ornamentation as between the bar I and the member 8 is that when the latter is used it may completely conceal the ornamentation of the bar I, displaying a different design and thereby providing a twoin-one article.

The frictional contact between the bar I and member 8 permits slidable adjustable connection between the bar I and member 8 and yet does not prevent free and easy separation of the bar I and member 8 when desired. It will be readily appreciated that the member 8, when of tubular form may be readily slipped into telescoping relation with the bar I The clasp lever 4 assists the frictional contact between the bar I and member 8 to hold the two parts against accidental relative longitudinal movement.

Thus it will be seen that on the one hand there is provided one article of manufacture for necktie holding or other purposes in the nature of a clasp, and on the other hand, a sub-assembly readily attachable to and removable from the clasp and in the nature of a member having the opposite ends of a flexible ornamental element secured to the said member, resulting in another type of two-in-one article of jewelry. A three-in-one article of jewelry is provided by reason of the detachability of the flexible member 8 from the member 8, enabling the latter to be carried by the bar I to conceal the superficial or other ornamentation on the front face of the bar I and display the different design carried on the front face of the member 8 or permitting the use of the flexible member in association with the member 8 as may be desired.

It is contemplated in the use of the present invention to furnish a plurality of sub-assemblies including the member 8 alone or the member 8 and the flexible member 9 carried thereby for association with the clasp. The ornamentation of the articles may vary and the user is enabled to readily substitute either the member 8 alone or the member 8 with the flexible member 9 for similar sub-assemblies. Thus the various elements of the invention may be interchanged at will according to various design ornamentations as may also the sub-assemblies with relation to the clasp.

The slidable member 8 is preferably of a length substantially the same as the length of the bar I and the flexible member 9 is preferably of a length greater than the length of either the bar or slide, permitting draping of the flexible member across the front of the necktie ID. The ends of the flexible member may be secured to the slidable member 8 in any suitable manner. One means for this purpose resides in the provision of snap hooks or equivalent elements II and I2 carried by the opposite ends of the flexible member 9 and which are adapted to be detachably secured in the eyes I3 and I4, respectively, formed in the reduced longitudinally extending terminals I5 and I6, respectively at the opposite ends of the slidable member 8. The ends of the flexible member 9 may be connected to the slidable member 8, detachably or otherwise, in any other suitable manner, but it will be understood that an essential feature of the present invention is to provide for detachability of the various parts as described to enable variations of designs and parts in the use of the invention.

If, incident to varying widths of neckties or the positioning of the clasp along the button fastening edge of the wearers shirt, there should be a tendency of the necktie to incline laterally or if there should be a tendency of the flexible member to wrinkle the longitudinal edges of the necktie, due to the position of the present invention, this inclination of the necktie may be overcome, and the necktie positioned to lie in a vertical plane with relation to the vertical plane of the button fastening edge of the shirt, by adjusting the slidable member 8 along the bar I as shown in Fig. 5. Thus the bar I may in effect be lengthened, as shown in Fig. 5, by adjustment of the slidable member 8 along the bar I where the member 8 is held by friction and by the pressure of the lever 4 in adjusted position.

To more positively hold the ornamental member 8 on the front bar I, the latter may have a detent or small protuberance IT on its rear face adapted to enter interchangeably any one of a plurality of cavities, sockets or recesses I8 on the inner face of the rear wall of the member 8. This will provide for a positive holding of the member on the bar and as regards adjustment longitudinally thereon. If desired, the protuberance I? may be formed on the inner face of the rear wall of member 8 and the recesses I8 formed on the rear face of bar I, a mere reversal and unnecessary to illustrate.

In another embodiment of the invention, and in the use of the aforesaid clasp and detachable ornamental member 8, the flexible member 9' may be connected as aforesaid to the outer end of member 8' with the opposite end of the flexible member 9' detachably or otherwise connected in an eye l9 formed on the support 20 or other portion of the clasp A. This will permit of a relative adjustment of the removable ornamental member and clasp bar to provide for a flexible mem ber for varying widths of neckties and to permit adjustment of drape of the flexible member. By having the flexible member detachably connected to the clasp, as just stated, a disconnection thereof will permit of removal of the ornamental member 8 from the clasp, as will be understood.

From the foregoing it will be seen that there is provided a highly ornamental necktie retainer or holder and in which by virtue of detachable parts different parts may be used and different ornamentations exposed to View. It will be appreciated that Where flexible members are formed of chains that different types of chains materially different from one another provide for presentation of different ornamental effects and that the use of the invention is thereby greatly enhanced, enabling users to make departures in general dress appearances and enabling adaptation of the invention for use according to the fancies of the purchasing public.

What is claimed is:

1. A necktie holder comprising a clasp including a straight front bar, a straight member extending longitudinally. of said bar land; of a length substantially the same as the length of said bar and longitudinally slidable on and detachably secured to the bar, and a flexible member of a length greater than the length of the bar or the aforesaid member and detachably secured at both ends to said straight member.

2. A necktie holder comprising a clasp including a substantially straight bar, a substantially straight member slidable longitudinally on and off of said bar and having terminal projecting ends provided with eyes, and a necktie holding member having its ends detachably connected in said eyes whereby to position or separate said slidable and necktie holding members as a unit or separately with relation to said bar.

3. A necktie holder comprising a clasp including a substantially straight bar, a substantially straight member slidable directly on said bar and detachably connected to said bar and having eyes at the ends thereof, and a flexible necktie holding member having its ends connected in the eyes of said substantially straight member whereby to position the substantially straight member and the flexible member as a unit on said bar or to remove the same as a unit from the bar.

A necktie holder comprising a clasp including a bar, a member slidable directly on said bar and detachably connected to the bar, and a flexible necktie holding member connected to said member, said detachable member and the flexible member being applicable and removable as a unit with relation to said bar.

A necktie holder comprising a device for connection With wearing apparel and including a front bar and a clasping element, a tubular member slidable on the bar and adjustable thereon to increase the length of the bar, and a flexible member carried by the tubular member and adjustable therewith to control the point of suspension of the flexible member with relation to the front bar of the clasp.

6. A necktie holder comprising a device for connection with the wearers shirt and including a bar, a member slidable on and 0E the bar, and a flexible member having its opposite ends connected to said member.

A necktie holder comprising a clasp including a lever and a front bar, the latter being adapted to bear an ornamental design, a slidable member telescoping with the front bar and slidable on and off the same and completely concealing the ornamental design of the front bar when arranged thereon, said slidable telescoping member being retained on the front bar by frictional contact therewith and by pressure of said lever andried thereby, the-flexible member being adapted to extend across the front of the necktie and being removable from the slidable telescoping member to enable the design of the slidable tubular member alone to be displayed at the front of the necktie, and the slidable telescoping member and the flexible member being also removable from the front bar as a unit to permit display of the design of the front bar at the front of the necktie, whereby a three-in-one necktie holder is provided.

8. A necktie holder comprising a clasp including a front bar, a tubular member telescoping with said bar and removable therefrom, and a flexible member having its opposite ends detachably connected with said tubular member.

9. A necktie holder comprising a clasp including a spring actuated lever and a bar, a tubular member of a length substantially the length of the bar and having slidable telescoping frictional engagement with the bar, and a flexible member connected at its ends to the ends of the tubular member.

10. A necktie holder comprising a clasp including a spring actuated lever and a bar, a tubular member of a length substantially the length of the bar and having slidable frictional engagement with the bar, said tubular member being held on the bar against disconnection therefrom by the frictional contact thereof with the bar and by pressure of said lever.

11. A necktie holder comprising a clasp including a spring actuated lever and a bar, a tubular member of a length substantially the length of the bar and having slidable engagement with the bar and at its ends provided with eyes, said tubular member being held on the bar of the clasp against disconnection therefrom by pressure of said lever and a flexible member having its opposite ends connected in said eyes.

A necktie holder comprising a clasp including a spring actuated lever and a front bar, the latter being adapted to bear an ornamental design, a tubular member of a length substantially the length of the bar telescoping therewith and slidable on and off the same and completely concealing the ornamental design of the front bar in one use of the article and being retained on the front bar by a frictional contact with the latter and by pressure of said lever and presenting a front face adapted to receive an ornamental design.

13. A sub-assembly for detachable connection with a necktie holder comprising a tubular openended member provided with end terminals having eyes, and a flexible member having its opposite ends secured in said eyes.

14. A necktie holder comprising a clasp including a bar and a spring pressed lever, a member movably connected to the bar of the clasp, and a flexible member of a length greater than the length of said movable member and connected at one end to said movable member and at its opposite end connected to the clasp so as to drape the flexible member on the holder and to adjust the degree of drape of the flexible member with relation to the clasp, said spring pressed lever claspingly cooperating with said movable member on said bar to exert pressure on the movable member to hold the latter in position on the bar.

15. A sub-assembly for detachable connection with a necktie holder comprising a tubular openended member provided with end terminals deflected out of alignment with said member and having eyes, and a flexible member having its opposite ends secured in said eyes.

A necktie holder comprising a clasp including a bar and a spring actuated lever cooperating with the bar, a tubular member of a length substantially the same as the length of said bar slidably and adjustably mounted on the latter and held in adjusted positions on the bar by said spring actuated lever, and a flexible mem- 17. A necktie holder comprising a clasp ineluding a bar, a tubular member detachably telescoping with the bar for slidable movement on and off of the bar and also adjustable on the bar to lengthen the latter, and a flexible member having connection with said tubular member.

18. A sub-assembly for detachable connection with a necktie holder comprising a tubular openended member, and a flexible member having its opposite ends connected to the ends of the tubular member.
