Description

Mmm 3l, 3%@ E, CALQGEH@ SAFETY RAZOR Filed June 2l, 1954 Vm ym j@ d w V@ ATTORNEY f I BY i m n Patented Mar. 31, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to safety razors and has for the primary object the provision of' an improved holder and handle wherein the holder consists of a minimum number of parts and is especially co-nstructed to accomodate a single edge blade shaped similarly to the blade of a straight razor and will permit the blade to be easily and quickly installed and removed therefrom and when supporting the blade will position the cutting edge of said blade properly with respect to the guard of the holder so that efficient cutting action on the hair of a persons face will be assured without danger of scraping or cutting the skin of the face.
With these and other objects in view this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and acompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is an end elevation partly in section illustrating a safety razor constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a. perspective view illustrating the same with the blade removed.
Figure 3 is a perspective view illustrating the holder with the blade removed.
Figure 4 is a plan View illustrating a handle employed for supporting the blade so that the latter may be sharpened or stropped.
Figure 5 is an edge view illustrating a spring retaining element for the blade.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral l indicates in entirety the razor forming the subject matter of the present invention and includes a handle 2, a holder 3 and a blade 4, the latter having a single cutting edge and shaped or constructed similarly to a blade of a straight razor.
The holder 3 includes a body 5 of tubular formation, one wall of which is of an increased thickness and slotted, as shown at B, which denes iiange-like portions 1 and 8 extending laterally of the body 5. The flange-like portion 8 is provided with a series of teeth 9 to form a guard for the cutting edge of the blade 4 when positioned in the slot of the body. The angelike portion 'l tapers from the body towards its free edge upon its outer face and terminates short of the teeth 9 to properly expose the cutting edge of the blade. The ends of the teeth are round so as to glide over the skin of a persons face with the cutting edges of the blade properly positioned to cut or sever the hair upon the face without danger of cutting or scraping the skin of the face. The non-cutting edge or portion of the blade 4 is disposed within the body 5, as shown in Figure 1, and the blade is applied and removed from the body by way of .either end of the latter and when slid into the body to have its thickened and non-sharpened edge engaged by a flat bowed spring l0 to cause the blade to bear against opposite walls of the slot of the body and thereby prevent accidental displacement of the blade in any direction with respect to the holder. The ends of the leaf spring are bent angularly and rit within notches Il formed in the ends of the body to prevent displacement of the spring.
A screw threaded shank l2 is formed integrally with the body and the handle 2 has one end socketed and interiorly screw threaded for threaded connection to the shank l2 whereby the handle may be readily applied and removed from the holder when desired. The other end of the handle is biiurcated to form spaced jaws I3 and also is exteriorly screw threaded to have f threaded thereon a clamping ring I4.
When desiring to sharpen or strop the blade 4 the jaws I3 are slid over one end of the blade causing the jaws to spread and by screwing the ring I4 towards the blade or the free ends of the .I
jaws will cause the latter to ,eiciently grip the blade to retain the latter in proper position on the handle for stropping or sharpening.
Having described the invention, I claim:
A safety razor comprising a tubular-shaped body having one wall thereof increased in thickness and slotted to provide flange-like portions extending laterally of the body and presenting opposed blade engaging faces, said razor having a blade with a thickened non-sharpened edge arranged between said faces and extending into the body to engage an inner wall of said body, teeth formed on one of the ange-like portions and extending beyond the cutting edge of the blade to provide a guard, said body having f' notches in the ends thereof, and a bowed spring bearing against the blade in the body at the thickened edge of the blade to force said blade against the opposed blade engaging faces and to hold the blade from accidental movement in either an outward or lateral direction and said spring having the ends thereof bent angularly and engaging in the notches.
