1 Claim.

This invention relates to improvements in Wallpaper packages and, more especially, to such a package especially adapted for packing, displaying and retailing Wall-paper and border therefor.

In the packaging of wall-paper, difculty has heretofore been encountered in displaying the design without necessitating loosening or unwrapping of the roll. There has also been difficulty in displaying and retailing border for Wall-paper rolls. Such border is usually in the form of narrow strips with or Without blank margins and each roll of wall-paper ordinarily requires a more or less denite amount of border material. It is one of the features of my invention to make up a unit package containing a roll of wall-paper together with a sufficient amount of border therefor and display on the outside of the package both the paper and the border so that a purchaser can know what is inside of the package by a mere examination of the outside thereof Without opening or loosening the package or roll.

My invention nds a particular utility in connection with a roll of wall-paper wound With the face inside. It may be stated that this is the conventional or usual Way of Winding Wall-paper rolls at the present time. Obviously, when so Wound, a portion of the end of the roll must be loosened or unrolled in order to disclose the design or face of the paper. In the practice of my invention, a Wrapper is put over the roll, said Wrapper being made of the same material as the Wall-paper with the face or design outside so that the design on the Wall-paper is fully disclosed Without loosening or unfastening the packageor roll.

In speaking of a roll of Wall-paper, it is to be understood that I include either a so-called single roll, double roll, or tri le roll, or any length or lengths of paper Wound in a single roll. For eX- ample, a double roll may be substantially sixteen yards long. Assuming that the paper is eighteen inches Wide, such a roll may provide five strips of three yards each Where the ceiling is nine feet' high. Such a double roll of paper, therefore, Would require seven and one-half feet of border, that is, enough border to go across the ends of the five strips. In a package employing my invention having a so-called double roll, therefore, I Would put in at least seven and one-half feet of border and in order to provide a margin of safety, I might put in nine feet of border or more. In speaking of a corresponding quantity or amount of border, therefore, or in speaking of a sufficient amount or quantity of border to match a certain amount of paper, I mean enough border so that when the paper is used on the Wall in an ordinary manner, there will be sufficient border to cover the ends of the strips used.

Other features and advantages of my invention Will appear more fully as I proceed With my specication.

In those forms of packages embodying the features of my invention shown in the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a top plan view, partly in section; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional view; Fig. 3 is an end View; Fig. 4 is a view taken as indicated by the line of Fig. 2 on an enlarged scale; Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing a modified form; Fig. 6 is an end view of the same; Figs. 7 and 8 are views similar to Fig. 4, showing modications; Fig. 9 is a view similar to Fig. 1, shoW- ing another modification; and Figs. 10 and 11 are views similar to Fig. 4, showing further modications.

As shown in the drawings, the package may be made up in a variety of Ways. The essential features, however, are that the package or roll shall have on the outside a covering of Wall-paper with the face out, said covering showing the same design as the Wall-paper enclosed in the roll. Another feature is that there shall be displayed on the outside of the package a portion of the border, also with the face out, said border having the same design as the border actually enclosed in the package.

In Figs. 1 to 8, inclusive. I have shown various Ways of making the package, in Which the roll of Wall-paper is Wound with the face inside (except for the outer layer forming the cover), as this is the customary Way of winding Wall-paper. In Fig. 1, a roll of Wall-paper so Wound is indicated by IIJ. Outside of the roll there is placed the cover sheet II Which is cut from the 4same stock as the roll Il) but is placed around the roll with its face out. The end of the roll is indicated by Illa. The two ends of the cover II are indicated by I la. The edges of the cover sheet Il are covered by the stripof border I2 which is pasted, as indicated by the paste I3, to hold the cover II on the roll. The strip of border I2 is cut from the same stock as the small rolls of border I4, I4 inserted in the ends of the roll Ill. It is to be understood that there is sulficient quantity of border material in the tWo rolls I4 to match the roll of wall-paper Il! in ordinary usage. For example, if the roll Ill is long enough toprovide ve vertical strips on the walls, there is enough border to extend across the ve ends of such strips. In other Words, the border has a length somewhat more than ve times the width of the paper in the roll I0.

In Figs. 5 and 6, I have shown a slightly diierent way of incorporating the border material in the package. As here shown, the wall-paper is indicated by IIB and the strips of border, as ndicated by H4, are spirally Wound on the roll of Wall-paper IIB. Outside of the border strips is the cover III corresponding to the cover II and the package is sealed by a strip of border II2 corresponding to the strip I2.` Y

In Figs. '7 and 8, I have shown how the Wrapper or cover of wall-paper with the face out can be applied to the roll without making it in a separate piece. For example, as shown in Fig. '7, the end of the roll 2 I0 at 2I ElEL instead'of being cut off is folded back on itself and the material is carried around in the reverse direction, as indicated by 2| I, to completely enclose the roll. The outer layer 2| I, therefore, Will be Wall-paper of the same material as 2I0, but With its face out. The end 2I Ia is sealed by a strip of border 2I2 pasted at 2I3. As shown in Fig. 8, instead of using the border to seal the Wrapper, the end of the paper Wrapper itself may be pasted to form the seal. As shown, for example, the Wall-paper 3 I 0 is bent back on itself, as indicated at 3I0a, and carried around the roll to form a Wrapper, the end 3IIlb being sealed by the paste 3 I 3. In this case, a strip of the border SI2 is pasted on the outside of the roll to display the border. It is to be understood that in each of the embodiments shown in Figs. '7 and 8, strips of the border material are inserted in the ends of the roll of wall-paper, as shown in Fig. 2.

In Figs. 9, 10, and 11, I have illustrated how the invention may be used in connection with a roll which is wound face out. For example, as shown in Fig. I0, with the paper 4I0 Wound face out, the end M021 may be sealed by a strip of border material 4I2; or, as shown in Fig. 11, the end 5I!)a may be pasted, as indicated by 5I3, to keep the roll from unwinding and the stripy of border 5I2 may be pasted to the outside of the roll to display the same.

While I have shown and described certain embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that it is capable of many modications. Changes, therefore, in the construction and arrangement may be made Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as disclosed in the appended claim, in which it is my intention to claim all novelty inherent in my invention as broadly as permissible, in view of the prior art.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

A package, including; a roll of wall-paper; a quantity of border corresponding to said roll of paper; a Wrapper around said roll formed of a piece of the same Wall-paper with its face outside; and a strip of the same border arranged longitudinally on the outside of the package with its face outside, said strip of border sealing said Wrapper.
