Y'Ihe racks 26, 20are engaged by pinions 2| 2I keyed on opposite ends of transverse shafts 22-22 disposed on opposite ends of the motor I5 and journaled in bearing supports 23 23 integral with the frame of the motor I5.
The bearing supports 23 yenclose the pinions 2| and abut the outer face of the guides I4 and serve as a means for guiding the cutting element I3 as it is vertically moved in the guides I4.
A shaft 25 extends longitudinally of the motor I5 on one side thereof and has a plurality of worms 26-26 thereon disposed adjacent opposite ends of the motor I5. The worms 26 are of the self-locking type and mesh with and drive Worm gears 21 keyed on respective ends of the shafts 22 for rotating said shafts simultaneously and thus raising or lowering the cutting element I3 in the guides I4. A spur gear 29 is freely mounted on the shaft 25 near the rearward end thereof and is selectively connectible therewith by means of suitable clutch mechanism` which may be of any well known type but which is herein shown as a jaw clutch 3D. 'Ihe spur gear 29 is rotated by means of a spur gear 3| freely mounted on a sleeve 32l and driven from the motor I5 at a plurality of frictionally controlled speeds by means of a frictionally controlled plural speed planetary reduction device generally indicated at 33.
The planetary speed reduction device 33 is of a usual construction so will only be described in so far'as is necessary to fully disclose my present invention and is adapted for complete variation in speed under the control of a friction band 34 operated by a suitable system of levers (not shown) and is driven from the motor I5 by means of a motor pinion 35'and spur gear 36 keyed on the sleeve 32.
A sun gear 31 is integral with the inner end of the sleeve 32 and meshes with and drives planetary pinions 38, which pinions mesh with an internal gear 39 controlled by the friction band 34. Planetary pinions 40 are disposed adjacent to and integral with the planetary pinions 38 and mesh IISy with and drive an internal gear 4| adjacent the internal gear 39, and a spur gear 42 integral with a sleeve 43.
Clutch jaws 44 are integral with the internal gear 4| and are connectible with the spur gear 3| for driving said gear at one speed, while clutch jaws 45 are integral with a member 46 fixed on the sleeve 43 and are connectible with the spur gear 3| for driving said spur gear at a lower speed. Clutch jaws 41 extend radially inward from a clutch collar 48, which clutch collar is operatively connected with the spur gear 3|. Said clutch jaws are provided to connect the jaws 44 or 45 with the spur gear 3|. The clutch collar 48 is shifted by a suitable system of levers of an ordinary construction.
Thus the gear 3| may be driven at a high or low speed, each of which speeds are controlled by the pressure of the friction band 34 on the outer periphery of the internal gear 39, which friction band also acts as a safety device upon overload of the feeding or driving mechanism.
It may thus be seen that the cutting element I3 may be raised or lowered in the guides I4 at a plurality of frictionally controlled speeds and that said cutting element may be locked in any position on the guides I4 by means of the self-locking worms 26 and worm gears 21.
Referring now in particular to the cutting mechanism and cutter bar supporting section I6, a cutter chain 50 is movable about the cutter bar I1 in a usual manner and is selectively driven from the forward end of the motor I by a bevel motor pinion 5I, bevel gea-r 52 xed on a spider 53, jaw clutch 54, vertical shaft 55, and cutter chain sprocket 56.
The spider 53 of the bevel gear 52 is journaled on the outer periphery of a hub 51 of a cutter bar supporting member 58, while the vertical shaft 55 is journaled within said hub. The cutter bar supporting member 58 is supported in the cutter bar supporting section I6 for pivotal movement with respect thereto about the axis of the vertical shaft 55. The cutter bar supporting member 58 is provided with an outwardly extending upper section 59, the outer periphery of which is circular and abuts the inner periphery of the cutter bar supporting section I6. A shoulder 6D extends n inwardly from the cutter bar supporting section I6 and serves to support the outwardly extending upper section 59 of the cutter bar supporting member 58. A ring 6I abuts the top portion of the outwardly extending upper section 59 of the cutter bar supporting member 58 and is fixed to the cutter bar supporting section I 6 to prevent vertical movement of said cutter bar supporting member with respect to the cutter bar supporting section I6.
A flange 62 depends from the outwardly extending upper section 59 of the cutter bar supporting member 58 and has a worm gear 63 keyed thereon. A worm 64 is fixed on a longitudinal shaft 65 and meshes with and drives the worm gear 63 which in turn moves the cutter bar I1 about the axis of the vertical shaft 55. The longitudinal shaft 65 is journaled at its forward end in a housing 66 for the worm 64 and has its rearward end journaled in a bearing support 61 extending outwardly from the feeding and elevating section I8. A spur gear 68 is journaled on its hub in a bearing support 69 extending outwardly from the feeding and elevating section I8 and is freely mounted on the longitudinal shaft 65 for rotatable movement with respect thereto. Suitable clutch means are provided for driving the longitudinal shaft 65 from the spur gear 68, which means herein comprise a clutch collar feathered on the longitudinal shaft 65 having clutch jaws 1I thereon engageable with clutch jaws 12 integral with the rearward face of the spur gear 68.
The spur gear 58 is driven by a spur gear 13 keyed on the end of a longitudinal shaft 14, which gear is in turn driven by the spur gear 3| through the frictionally controlled plural speed planetary reduction device 33 hereinbefore described.
Thus the cutter bar I1 may be pivotally moved about the axis of the vertical shaft 55 by the motor I5 at a plurality of predetermined frictionally controlled speeds. This provides a power actuated means for sumping the cutter bar into the coal, which means is frictionally controlled to compensate for hard spots in the coal and to prevent breakage of the cutting mechanism when boulders or sulphur balls are encountered in the coal.
It may be seen that the cutter bar I1 may be rotated 360 degrees. Thus the cutter bar may be moved in a position on the machine frame so it extends rearwardly along the machine frame when travelling about the mine as is shown by dotted lines in Figure 2. This materially shortens the travelling length of the mining machine and makes it possible to negotiate sharp turns and travel in narrow entries or into rooms where the props are closely spaced.
Power actuated means are provided for mo'ving the mining machine about the mine on the wheels I I, which herein comprise a worm cut integral with the shaft 14, which shaft is driven from the motor I 5 through the planetary geared reduction device 33, spur gear 3|, and spur gear 13 xed to said shaft. The worm 15 drives a worm gear 16 on a vertical shaft 11. A squared socket 18 is provided on the lower end of the vertical shaft 11, which socket is engaged by a squared end of an adjacent vertical shaft 19. The vertical shaft 19 has a bevel pinion 80 xed thereon, which bevel pinion meshes with and drives bevel pinions 8|-8I on opposite sides thereof and is freely mounted on a transverse shaft 82. Suitable clutch means are provided to operatively connect either of the bevel pinions 8| with the transverse shaft 82 which herein comprise a clutch collar 83 feathered on the transverse shaft 82 having clutch jaws on each end thereof selectively connectible with corresponding clutch jaws on the inner face of each of the bevel pinions 8| so as to drive the shaft 82 in opposite directions without reversal of the motor I5. A sprocket 84 is keyed on the transverse shaft 82 and has driving connection with the rearward axle I2 and wheels I I by means of a drive chain 85 and driven sprocket 85 on the rearward axle I2. The forward and rearward axles I2 are operatively connected together by means of a suitable chain and sprocket drive generally indicated at 81.
The mining machine may thus be moved about the mine on the wheels I I at a plurality of frictionally controlled speeds which include a relatively fast frictionally controlled travelling speed, and a slow frictionally controlled sumping speed for feeding the cutter bar into the coal.
A feed drum 88 has been provided to aid the Wheels I I in feeding the cutter bar into the coal when necessary; as, for instance, when the cutting is harder than is ordinarily encountered. This feed drum is driven from the vertical shaft 11 by means of a spur pinion 89 and a suitable geared reduction not herein shown since it is no part of my invention, and is thus rotatable at a plurality of frictionally controlled speeds through the planetary gearedy speed reduction device in the same manner the wheels Il are driven and controlled by said planetary geared speed reduction device. A
It may now be seen that a mining machine has been provided which is of a simple and rugged construction and is suitable for use in narrow-entries, that this machine is vertically adjustable for cutting at various elevations withY respect to the mine bottom, that the cutter bar may be moved about a vertical axis by power mechanism actuated by the motor I for arcuately feeding the cutter bar into the-coal `and Vthat the cutter bar may be folded backwardly along the machine frame when travelling `about the mine, and that said mining machine may be moved about the mine by means of a drive mechanism actuated by the motor `I 5 and that all of these above mentio'ned movements and operations are controlled by means of a single frictionally controlled plural speed planetary geared reduction device..
While I have herein shown and described one form in which my invention may be embodied it will be understood that the construction and arrangement of the various parts may be altered or changed without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. Moreover, I do not wish to be construed as limiting myself to the particular or identical construction illustrated excepting as it may be specifically limited in the appended claims. Y
