Description
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
JAMES R. FLNLEY, OF DELPHI, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO WM. F. LYTIJE, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASH-BOARDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 203,129, dated April 30, 1878 application filed March 25, 1878.
To all whom it may concern Be itknown that I, JAMES R. FINLEY, of Delphi, in the county of Carroll and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wash Boards; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a wash-board, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to de-' scribe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a central vertical section of my board; Fig. 2, a cross-section; and Figs. 3 and 4 are detail sections of parts of the same.
The frame of my wash-board is made in the usual manner, with two parallel side pieces, A A, connected together by cross-bars B and B, and above the cross-bar B is the soap-box O. The rubbing-surface of the wash-board is composed of a series of cross-bars, D D, the outer edges of which are rounded, and these crossbars are covered on the outer edges and sides with a covering, a, of zinc, galvanized iron, or similar non-corrosive material. The ends of each covering a are bent over on the outside, as shown at b 12, making the covering double at each end, where the bars D D are inserted in longitudinal grooves in the side pieces A A between the cross-bars B B. The double ends 11 of the covering of said crossbars leave narrow openings between them, through which the water passes.
The side pieces A A of the wash-board frame are extended in width rearward, as shown, to hold between them, on the under side of the rubber-bars D, a sliding box or drawer, F, the bottom of which is perforated with numerous holes, 00. In this box is fitted a skeleton frame,
G, which holds or contains a filtering-cloth, l, as shown. The sliding box or drawer F is confined in place by means of strips h h, .secured to the side pieces A A, forming, as it were, guides or grooves, in which said box can be inserted and pushed down to the lower cross-bar B.
It will thus be seen that I supply a filter to and under the wash-board in such a manner that the dirty suds will pass through the same and be filtered and return clean to the tub.
It is, of course, evident that the filter may be arranged in any suitable manner, and it may be applied to any wash-board which has openings through it for the water to pass through.
When the filter is constructed in the manner herein shown and described, it can easily be removed-for cleansing and for renewing the filtering-cloth, as desired.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by I Letters Patent, is-- l. A wash-board provided with a filter, arranged to have the water pass from the wash board through the filter, for the purposes set forth.
2. A wash-board having a series of slits or perforations, in combination with a filter, arranged under the same, for the purposes herein set forth.
3. In a wash-board, a series of wooden bars, D D, provided with metal coverings a u, having their ends doubled, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
4. The box or drawer F, skeleton frame G, and filtering-cloth I, in combination with a wash-board, for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
