Description

R. B. CRANE. Paper-Basket.
No. 202,999. Patented Aprilv30, 1878.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
ROBERT B. CRANE, OF WESTFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER BASKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 262,999, dated April 30, 1878; application filed March 19, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROEERT B. CRANE, of Westfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Paper Baskets and other analogous receptacles, of which the following is a speciication:
My invention relates to vessels or receptacles made of paper-stock without seams, the
` whole being a homogeneous fabric, the sides simultaneously with this, a process by which the article may be produced, and to that description I refer for fuller information as to the manner of producing the article.
In this application I desire to cover by Letters Patent the article itself, without reference to either the machinery or the process by which it is manufactured.
I have shown in the annexed drawing, in section and perspective, the body of what maybe denominated a basket.7 Itis, however, obvious that the size may be increased or diminished without changing the structure of the article.
It is also manifest that the form may be va` ried according to fancy or the special purpose for which the article is intended to be applied. Thus, its outline may be round, square, oblong, or oval. So also they may be made with or without handles, or with any kind of handle which maybe dictated by taste or the special object for which the article is designed.
Analogous articles have been made of paperpulp; but the papier-mache is brittle, and my invention may be distinguished from all heretofore known by the body being formed of a continuous sheet of paper coiled into a tube, the rim being rolled on one edge out of the material itself, and the bottom being homogeneous with the body, and the Whole made without the appearance of seams. It may be made for holding liquids by coating it with some insoluble varnish or other analogous preparation, and it may be lined with sheet metal.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A basket or other analogous article made from a tube formed of successive layers of paper, having a volute rim, formed by rolling the paper on itself, and a bottom of homogeneous material formed on the body without seams, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I ax my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT B. CRANE.
