Description

UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN ELEVATlNG-LADDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 202,876, dated April 23, 1878; application filed February 2, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER RUTAN, of Sulphur Springs, in the county of Crawford and State of Ohio, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Elevating-Ladders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a side view of my elevating-ladder, and Fig. 2 is a front view of the same.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of an elevat ing-ladder for painters and builders use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention.
My elevating-ladder is made in two sections, each section composed of two parallel bars, A A, connected by means of a series of rounds, B B, and the two sections connected together by hinges a a. in such a manner that they can be folded close together, and when opened or extended form one continuous ladder.
In addition.to the hinges on a, there are metal clamps or plates b b fastened to the bars A A of the lower section at the upper end, and extending upward to embrace the lower ends of the side bars of the upper section, when the ladder is extended, and to which they are then fastened by pins d 01 passing through the parts, as shown.
The side bars A of the two sections are provided with face-plates O G, extending their entire length, and projecting a short distance beyond both sides of said side bars. On the upper ladder-section is a sliding sash, D, provided with clasps e e to embrace the edges of the face-plates C d on said ladder-section. From the center of the upper portion of the sash D extends an arm, D having a slot or recess made in its under side near the outer end, and in the same is pivoted a block or bar, D having teeth as m in its under edge. This device is for the purpose of fastening the ladder to the roof or top of the building. On top of the sash D are holders ff to receive an arm, E, in the outer end of which is hung a piece, E, for fastening the side of the ladder to the building.
The sash D is to be raised to suit the height of the building by means of a rope, h, which is fastened to the top of the sash, and runs up and over a pulley, i, in the top cross-bar of the upper ladder-section, and then downward, and tied to the bottom round of the lower ladder-section. By this means the ladder can be secured to houses of different ,heights-one, two, three, &c., stories.
On the lower ladder-section is another sliding sash, G, with platform G at the bottom, and at the top of this sash is a Windlass, G provided with a ratchet-wheel, m, and crank G a is a pawl to engage with the ratchetwheel m.
p represents the hoisting-rope, one end of which is attached to a bail, H, at the top of the sash G, and passes upward over and around a pulley, s, in the arm D of the upper sash, and then downward to and around the Windlass. By this means the parties on the platform G can raise themselves to any desired height and remain suspended by the hoisting-rope. Near the top of the upper section is a friction-catch, t, to hold the sections together when folded.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A ladder for painters and builders, having an adjustable device to engage with the top or roof of a building, in combination with a platform that can be elevated and lowered independently of the engaging device, the latter being at rest, substantially as described.
2. The sliding sash D, provided with the arm D having the pivoted toothed bar D substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The combination of the sliding sash G, with platform G and Windlass G the pawl and ratchet n m, the hoisting-rope p, and sliding sash D, with arm D having pulley s, all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
PETER RUTAN. Witnesses:
M. M. CARROTHERS, J. F. KELLER.
