CABLE SUPPEJRT I Filed May 2, 1953 Inventor:

states such posts are generally triangular in cross section and one form of the device here illustrated is adapted for use in connection with such posts, while another form illustrates the device applied to a cylindrical post. It is to be understood, however, that it may be used in connection with posts of any form or with other supports of any desired character.
The principal object of my invention is the provision of a device of this general character which may be manufactured cheaply, which is rugged in construction and which may conveniently be secured to posts or other supports.
A specific object of my invention is the provision of a device of the foregoing character in which the cable embracing element is formed of two sections one of which is rigidly secured to the base element and the other of which is removably secured thereto.
Other objects of my invention will appear in the specification and will be particularly pointed out in the claims.
My invention will best be understood by reference to the accompanying drawing in which I have illustrated certain preferred embodiments thereof and in which- Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying my invention and illustrating the removable cable embracing section in disassembled position;
Fig. 2 is a view generally similar to Fig. 1 illustrating the cable supporting element embracing a cable;
Fig. 3 is a plan view, partially broken away, of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a section along the line 4-4 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a plan view generally similar to Fig. 3 illustrating a modified form of device; and
Fig. 6 is a section along the line 6-6 of Fig. 5.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the drawing.
Referring to the drawing and first to Figs. 1
to 4, E is a post polygonal in form to which the device embodying my invention may be secured. My invention comprises a base support I l, the walls or flanges [2 of which embrace sides of the post. The support II is provided with a forwardly extending portion indicated generally at l3 and comprising two spaced webs or flanges M each preferably integral with the base support and each preferably, but not necessarily, being provided at its forward end with an inwardly extending flange l5, a space or opening it being provided between the flanges at their forward ends. The front wall or transverse web E 2i of the base support is provided with an opening 11 and the post with an opening l8, and a bolt 19 passes through the-openings I! and I8 and secures the base support to the post. The dimensions of the space l6 are sufficient to permit the ready insertion of the bolt therethrough, and the opening I1 is preferably somewhat larger than the bolt so that the latter may pass through said opening even when disposed at an angle t its normal position.
The cable embracing element embodying my invention comprises two sections one of which. 20 is preferably integral with the webs l4 and with the base element and is provided with a gutter-like groove 2| in which the cable may 20 temporarily be positioned. It will be observed that the outer ends of the webs or flanges 14 form an abutment extending above and to the rear of the groove 2| and against which the removable section of the cable embracing element is secured, thus forming a cable gripping means which cannot be readily bent or knocked apart by impact to release the cable.
The cable embracing element also comprises a removable section 22 preferably, but not necessarily, provided with guiding portions 23 and 2e respectively connected by a portion 25 which is received in the space [6 so that the portion 23 is located back of and the portion 24 in front of the flanges l5 and serve to guide the section 22 into cable embracing position and assist in retaining the same firmly in that position, the removable section of the cable embracing element having surfaces complementary to those of the stationary cable embracing element and interfitting therewith. The removable section 22 is also provided with a member preferably in the form of a bolt 26 which is integral with the section and which passes through an opening 21 in the lower wall of the base support, a nut 26! engaging the lower threaded end of the bolt and securing the section 22 in cable embracing position. The base element is preferably provided with shoulders 28 which are engaged by the lower edge of the guide portion 24 of the removable 5 section 22. The cable which is secured in position by the clamping element is indicated at 29. The base element is preferably provided with strengthening ribs 30. The clamping or securing element 22 is located between said flanges which thus afford protection to said securing element thereby afiording protection to the cable securing element by preventing the latter from being loosened or injured by the impact of an object which might otherwise engage said section 22 and loosen or injure the same.
The entire device is preferably made of malleable iron and the interior edges of the cable embracing element are preferably chamfered as at 3! as best shown in Fig. 3 to prevent injury to the cable when the cable is struck or otherwise deflected from its normal straight position. The exterior surface of the cable embracing element is also preferably rounded as at 32 as shown in Fig. 3 so that it merges as gradually as possible into the surface of the cable and does not form an abrupt projection thereon.
In Figs. 5 and 6 I have illustrated a slightly modified form of my device for use on round posts Ilia which are shown as formed of wood. The vertical wall lZa of the base supporting element is rounded to engage the surface of the post and is provided with vertical ribs 33 sharpened at their edges so that they may be driven into the posts to obtain the base support'in position on the post.
It will be observed that the flanges l2 and the transverse web [2| in the first species described, and the base lZa of the second species, are made reentrant so that they extend around and embrace a portion of the post thereby permitting the device to be rigidly secured to the post with a single securing element, such as the bolt l9.
While I have described my invention in its preferred embodiment, it is to be understood that the words which I have used are words of de- 1 scription rather than of limitation and that the drawings are merely illustrative. Hence, changes within the purview of the appended claims may be made without departing from the true scope and spirit of my invention.
