ATTORNEYS.
Patented Dec. 24, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
1 Claim.
This invention relates to vaginal applicators and has for a primary object the provision of an instrument of that class that will effectively and positively eject material without relying upon manual manipulation or any means other than a positively acting medium forming a part of the applicator, whereby uniform action takes place every time the applicator is used.
Other objects of this invention are to provide novel means formed on an ejecting plunger for determining the quantity of material ejected from the instrument, and a unique releasing latch disposed exteriorly of the instrument and fashioned in a way that will afford a positively acting device at all times, which device is ruggedly constructed, is not likely to get out of adjustment, and may be thoroughly sterilized without injury to any of the component parts thereof.
Minor objects will appear during the course of the following description, referring to the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure l is a side elevation of a vaginal applicator embodying the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal, central section through the applicator.
Fig. 3 is a cross section taken on line III-III of Fig. 1, and,
Fig. 4 is a section taken on line IVIV of Fig. 1.
In constructing the vaginal applicator, the same may be made of aluminum or any other suitable material and comprise an extended tubular barrel 6, partially closed at one end to form a mouth 8 having a cylindrical portion terminating in a flared part, as shown in Fig. 2.
Internal threads ID are formed within barrel 5 adjacent the other end thereof, and a plug [2 is in screwthreaded engagement with said portion of the barrel. A passage I l allows plunger rod 16 to enter the chamber formed within barrel 6 and to rectilinearly reciprocate when the instrument is being operated. A head l8 in screwthreaded engagement with the innermost end of rod I6 is maintained in place by a lock nut 20 and a series of annular grooves 22 are formed in spaced relation along rod It adjacent the end thereof which has a grip 24 thereon.
This end of rod [6 passes through a slidably mounted slide 26 that is constantly urged toward one end of its path of travel by spring 28 positioned between plug [2 and the upturned portion of slide 26. This slide has tapered edges which ride in the undercut guideway 35) and a hole 32 is formed through slide 26 to allow the passage of rod I6. This hole 32 is of a diameter equal to the full diameter of rod l6 and a notch 34 in continuation of hole 32 is of a width equal to the diameter of rod H5 at the base of annular grooves 22.
Thus when rod It is moved to a point where spring 28 can force slide 2 5 outwardly, notch 34 moves into one of annular grooves 22 to hold rod l6 and all of its associated parts in an extended position against the action of spring 36, having one end bearing against the inner face of plug l2 and the other end against a cross pin 38 carried intermediate the ends of rod l6. Forcing slide 26 inwardly against the action of spring 28 will release plunger [6 and material which has been placed between the mouth 8 of barrel 6 and head It will be forced through said mouth with considerable velocity.
It is understood that structural modifications in manufacturing a vaginal applicator contemplated by this invention might be made without departing from the spirit of the invention and 20 scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
A vaginal applicator comprising a tubular barrel provided with a longitudinal bore of the same diameter throughout its length; a wall integral with said barrel and closing one end of the same and having an outwardly flared aperture formed therethrough; a reciprocable plunger within the barrel adapted to force material from the latter through the aperture of said wall; a screwthreaded plug having a central bore provided therethrough, and a transverse groove formed across the outer end thereof intersecting the passage, closing the other end of the barrel; a slide having an opening therethrough reciprocably mounted in said groove; a piston rod extending into said barrel through the said passage and opening into engagement with said plunger; means formed on the said rod, engageable by the said slide when in juxtaposition thereto; means for urging the said pltmger toward the apertured integral wall of the barrel comprising a spring coiled around said rod and having one end bearing against the said screwthreaded plug; an upturned portion on one end of said slide serving as a thumb-engaging member when releasing the slide from engagement with said rod; and a spring interposed between the side of the removable plug and said upturned portion, serving to yieldably urge the slide toward one end of its path of travel, said plunger, rod, and plug being removable as a unit from association with the barrel to permit introduction of a charge of material.
