Claims.
This invention relates to means for blasting,`
and more particularly, but not exclusively, to lm- `provements in blasting cartridges of the pressure fluid ruptured type especially adapted to use in the air shooting of coal or similar materials.
In the air shooting of coal, by means of cartridges containing suddenly released charges of highly compressed air, carbon dioxide, or the like,
it is best to cause release of the charge in a direction such that the reaction will tend to press the cartridge towards the back of the coal, as otherwise it might become a projectile capable of serious damage. As the coal falls, however, the pressure supply line or the like is dragged by the falling coal in an outward direction, and it is therefore desirable to eiect a disconnection between the line and the cartridge. i
An object of this invention is to provide an improved means for breaking down coal. A further object is to provide an improved blasting cartridge wherein the rupturing force is derived from means other than explosives. Another object is to provide an improved blasting cartridgeof the pressure fluid ruptured type wherein the cartridge is burst by a relatively high pressure within the cartridge. A further object is to provide a blasting cartridge having parts separable upon a predetermined blasting pressure within the cartridge and having means for causing an increase in and for effecting release of the pressure within the cartridge and including an element having connections with one of the separable portions of the cartridge, so that when the blast or release of pressure occurs, the said element is released from the cartridge. casing. A still further object is to provide in a cartridge of the pressure fluid ex ploded type an improved releasible fluid connection for connecting the pipe line toi the cartridge casing Still another object is to provide an improved blasting cartridge of the typeA wherein a rupturable end Wall is employed for releasing the blasting pressure and having improved means for connecting the pipe line toi the rupturable end wall whereby upon rupture of the end wall the connection is released from the cartridge casing. ese and other objects and advantages of this invention will, however, hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawing there is shown for purposes of illustration one form and a modification thereof which the invention may assume in practice.

In this illustrative embodiment of the invention, Fig. 1 sho'ws a wall of coal I or similar material to be blasted having an undercut 2 and a drill hole 3 into which is inserted a blasting cartridge generally designated d of an improved design. This cartridge has connected thereto a pipe line 5 which is in turn connected tothe receiver tank t oi a high pressure compressor 'i mounted on a wheeled truck t adapted tol-run along a mine trackway t laid on the floor of the mine chamber lll. The drill hole at the outer end of the cartridge is tamped at ii, and the pipe line 5 extends outwardly from the drill hole through this vtamping in the manner shown. Fluid under pressure is supplied from the compressor` receiver tank through the pipe line 5 to the cartridge, and 20 upon a, predetermined blasting pressure built up within the cartridge the latter bursts whereupon the pressure will be released from the cartridge casing and expanded in the wall of the material to be broken thereby to force down the material from the mine wall.
Now referring to the improved cartridge, it will be observed that the same comprises a cylindrical shell or'tubing i2 having an integral end closure or end wall it at itsv inner end. The
outer end of the casing is closed by a rupturable end wall, herein a metal disc or plate it of less strength than the walls of the casing I2. This rupturable disc or plate It is seated at its periphery against an annular shoulder or flange l5 formed integral withthe casing l2, and the disc or plate is held tightly in its seated positionv against the shoulder to form a fluid tight joint by a sleeve-like plug i6 threaded at ll within the cartridge casing. The pipe line 5 in the preferred form of the invention is threadedly connected at It, as shown in Fig. 2, within a nipple 19in turn threadedly connected at 20 within a boss 2l formed integral with the rupturable disc iii. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the pipe line 5 is threadedly connected at 22 directly within from the, cartridge casing, thereby diminishing the possibility of injury of the pipe line, due to falling of the blasted material thereon or sudden movement of the cartridge casing relative thereto, so that when it is again desired to use the cartridge for another blasting operation, the
same pipe line is simply connected to a new disc. In the ordinary rupture of frangible closure discs it has been found that they tend to bulge, and then shear adjacent their peripheries, there being little tendency to transverse rupture. Accordingly, it will be evident that the pipe con: nection will be exposed to little likelihood of injury and may be used repeatedly with new discs.
It is not desired to limit the invention to the particular cartridge construction shown, it being obvious that instead of connecting the pipe line to the rupturable disc. the pipe line may be connected to an element whichv does not rupture upon release of the blasting pressure, for instance a portion of the cartridge casing which merely releases or separates from the body of Vthe cartridge when the blast is eiected. It will also be noted that the invention may be practiced with blasting cartridges of types other than vthat disclosed herein, for instance a blasting i cartridge of the carbon-dioxide or other gaseous types wherein an electric igniter or heater is employed to cause an increase in the pressure or explosion within the cartridge, it being evident that the invention described herein may be practiced by connecting the wiresleading to the igniter or heater to a separable or rupturable portion'of the cartridge casing so that when the blast occurs and the parts separate or rupture, the wires will be released from the cartridge casing. In other words, it will be evident that the invention may be practiced with various types of blasting cartridges wherein it is desiredto effect release from the vcartridge casing of the means which effects the explosion or the increase in the blasting pressure.
As a result of this invention it will be notedV that an improved blasting cartridge is provided wherein the means for eEecting the blasting operation or the increase in the blasting pressure v is released from the cartridge casing when the blast occurs, thereby to prevent injury thereto by the falling of the Vblasted material or the sudden movement of the cartridge casing relative thereto due to the eXplosion It will further be noted that an improved blasting cartridge of `the pressure fluid exploded type is provided wherein the pipe line for supplying the blasting pressure to the cartridge is automatically released from the cartridge casing upon bursting of the cartridge. It will further be noted that an improved blasting cartridge is provided, which is of an extremely simple design and may be manufactured at a minimum of expense, it being necessary only to replace a relatively inexpensive part after each blasting operation. These and other uses and advantages of the improved blasting cartridge will be clearly apparent to those skilled in the art.
While there is in this application specifically -described one form and certain modiiications thereof which the invention may assume in practice, ,it will be understood that this form and the modiiications are disclosed for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a blasting cartridge, a casing having a separable portion, and means for eiecting release of the blasting pressurel within the cartridge upon separation of said portion and 'including a blast effecting element having a blast effecting connection solely with said separable portion, said portion upon separation thereof releasing automatically said connection 'from said casing.
2. In a, blasting cartridge, a. casing having a. rupturabley portion, and means for supplying a blasting pressure within said casing including a pressure conducting member having a connection with the rupturable portion of said casing.
3. In a blasting cartridge, a casing having a rupturable end wall, and means for supplying a rupturable pressure to the cartridge casing having a connection solely with said rupturable end wall, said end wall upon rupture thereof releasing automatically said pressure connection from said casing.
4. In a blasting cartridge. a cartridge casing, a rupturable disc closing one end of said casing, and means for supplying a rupturable pressure to the casing having aconm ction in said disc, said disc upon rupture thereof releasing automatically said supply connection from said casing.
5. In a blasting cartridge, a casing having a rupturable end wall, and a pipe line for supplying a rupturable pressure to the casing having a connection with said end wall.
6. In a blasting cartridge, a cartridge casing, a rupturable disc for closing one end of said casing, and a pipe line for supplying a rupturable pressure to the casing having a connection with said disc.
7. In a blasting cartridge, a casing having all its walls of a strength to support a predetermined minimum desired pressure and one of its walls weaker than the remainder to localize rupture when a predetermined higher pressure is attained, and means for effecting the attainment of such higher pressure including a pressure enecting connection solely with said weaker wall, said weaker wall upon rupture thereof releasing automatically said connection from said casing.
8. In a blasting cartridge; a casing having a rupturable portion adapted to break when a predetermined blasting pressure is attained within said casing, and means for eii'ecting the attainment of such blasting pressure including a pressure effecting -connection solely with said rupturable portion, said portion upon rupture thereof releasing automatically said pressure connection from said casing.
9. In a blasting cartridge, a casing having a rupturable end wall adapted to break when a predetermined blasting pressure is attained within said casing, and means for effecting the attainmentj of such blasting pressure including a pressure effecting connection solely with said rupturable end wall, said end wall upon rupture thereof releasing automatically said pressure connection from said casing.
10. In a blasting cartridge, a cartridge casing, a rupturable disc closing one end of said casing and adapted to break when a predetermined blasting pressure is attained within said casing, and means for effecting the attainment of such blasting pressure including a pressure effecting connection solely with said rupturable disc, said disc upon rupture thereof releasing automatically said pressure connection from said casing.
