Description

:Dec. 17, 1935. PARLANT'E ORNAMENTAL MATERIAL AND SHOE MADE THEREFROM ,Filed Nov. 12. 1934 upper material Patented Dec. 17, 1935 UNITED primarily for shoe uppers.
STATES ORNAMENTAL MATERIAL AND SHOE MADE THEBEFROM Frank Parlante, Brooklyn, N. Y. I
Application November 12,- 1934, Serial no. 152,550
4 Claims. (01. 66-170) The present invention relates to shoes and shoe One object of the invention is to provide a shoe formed therein material.
having an ornamental pattern during the process of making the Another object of the invention is to pre-form at least part of the shoe upper during the process of making the material whereby it is unnecessary to cut the material into the desired shape.
A further object of the invention is to provide a shoe in which at least part of the upper is crocheted.
A further object of the invention is to provide at least part of the upper of a shoe with a novel ornamental material comprising intertwined or crocheted textile lacquer.
The above objects of threads coated with a suitable the invention and other objects ancillary thereto will best be understood from the following description nection with the accompanying In the drawing: Fig. 1 is' a side present invention;
considered in condrawing.
view of a shoe embodying'the Fig. 2 is a plan view of a shoe upper blank in flat form before it is attached to the sole, and showingapartoithe counter strap in dotted lines;
Fig. 3 is-an enlarged view of a portion of the crocheted material, showing the threads approximately twice Referring to the drawing here shown,
their actual size.
in detail, the shoe, as
is a ladys shoe and comprises a sole ill of leather or other suitable material, a heel i2, and an upper constituted by a front vamp l4, provided with a strap portion it, provided with strap l6} and a heel and countera releasable fastener 2b slidably received within an opening 22 formed by a folded over portion 23 of the strap it. While the shoe here shown is of the openshank tyne. it will be understood that the invention is not restricted to a shoe of this'type but may be embodied generally in shoes of other types and styles.
In describing making the shoe according tion, reference will be had the upper material utilized in to the present invento the blank of upper material shown as a vamp portion ll, in Fig. 2,
but it will be understood shape of the of the shoe or a the entire up the same way. As upper material comprises that, except for the blank, other portions of the upper single upper portion constituting r of the shoe, may be made in here shown, the blank of the crocheted threads 24 intertwined in such a way as to produce a finished perlpheraLedge 26 which defines the shape of the blank, which preferably corresponds substantially to the shape of the part of the shoe for which the blank is employed. Thus, as shown in Fig. 2, the blank is in the form of the vamp of an openshank shoe and the shape of this blank is such that it may be secured to the sole of the shoe without any other shaping or cutting operations. In crochetingthe vamp H, or other part of the shoe upper, the ornamental pattern may be varied to a considerable extent, and if desired spaced openings 28 may be formed, and said openings may extend transversely of the vamp in the areas indicated by the dotted lines 30. The strap 16 may be formed by crocheting the same integrally with the edge portion 26 of the vamp It.
The threads 24, which are crocheted into the material of the shoe upper are textile threads coated with a suitable lacquer which will not detract substantially from their flexibility. I prefer, however, to utilize a coated thread known as Halemore coated cord which may be purchased from Maynard H. Moore Jr., Inc., of Everett,
This threador other thread which Massachusetts. 1. prefer to utilize in crocheting the present upper material is of circular cross section and consists of a linen thread coated with a lacquer of the desired color. Also in crocheting the shoe upper according to the present invention, the crocheted 30 material may comprise portions of contrasting colors whereby to enhance the ornamental efiect produced by the use of the present material. The coating on the threads is preferably lustrous.
In ma the shoe, after the upper has been crocheted it is stitched wrong side out to the-sewing lip (not shown) of the sole, according to the well known method of making turned shoes, the
stitching (not shown) passing through the edge portion 26 of the upper. Instead of securing the crocheted blank to the sole directly by thus stitch-' ing the edge portion to the sole, a strip of suitable material, such as upper leather or fabric may be stitched at one edge to said sole and at the other edge to the edge the shoe is turned, the heel attached, and the other finishing operationsare performed in the usual way. The shoe may. of course, be made by any well known process other than the turn process. If desired a lining of any suitable material may be applied to the crocheted. material.
While I have described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that the invention can be embodied otherwise than as specifically disclosed herein. Therefore, I do 26 of the crocheted blank. Then 45' vLetters Patent is:
