Preferably, both handles 420 , 430 are positioned at the same height. In the embodiment shown, the outboard handle 420 is at substantially the same height as the top of the gunwales 122 , 124 , and the inboard handle 430 is located on the motor box 150 adjacent to the aft-facing seat 202 , 204 . These handles 420 , 430 are positioned on the boat 100 to avoid interference with the seat bottom 210 and seatback 220 when they are moved upward to their second position (as discussed below). The handles 420 , 430 may, however, overlap the seat bottom 210 or be designed to move with the seat bottom 210 and seatback 220 .

Abstract
A boat including one or more seats, which may be aft-facing. The seat includes a seat bottom, which may be movable between a first position and a second position. The second position is a position in which the seat bottom is pivoted upwardly relative to the position of the seat bottom in the first position to allow access to a hidden compartment. The seat may also include a leg rest. The leg rest may extend aft of the transom, and may extend in a direction that is at a downward angle relative to the seat bottom. The leg rest may also have a length such that a gap is present between the leg rest and a surface beneath the leg rest.

- This application is a continuation-in-part of U.S. patent application Ser. No. 16/442,652, filed Jun. 17, 2019. U.S. patent application Ser. No. 16/442,652 is a continuation of U.S. patent application Ser. No. 15/587,674, filed May 5, 2017, now U.S. Pat. No. 10,336,411. U.S. patent application Ser. No. 15/587,674 is a continuation of U.S. patent application Ser. No. 14/845,606, filed Sep. 4, 2015, now U.S. Pat. No. 9,650,117. U.S. patent application Ser. No. 14/845,606 claims the benefit under 35 U.S.C. § 119(e) of U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 62/046,394, filed Sep. 5, 2014, and titled “Aft-Facing Transom Seating for a Boat.” U.S. patent application Ser. No. 14/845,606 is also a continuation-in-part of U.S. patent application Ser. No. 29/501,577, filed Sep. 5, 2014, now U.S. Pat. No. D743,318.
- This invention relates to seating for a boat, particularly aft-facing seating positioned proximate to the transom of the boat.
- Boats are used to tow watersports performers, such as water skiers, wakeboarders, and the like, using a tow-line. The performer holds onto one end of the tow-line and the other end is attached to the boat. A boat may also be used to generate a wake on which a watersports performer, such as a wake-surfer, may wake-surf. People in the boat often desire to watch the watersports performer, and in some states, a spotter is required by law. Because the watersports performers are behind the boat, it is desirable to have an aft-facing seat, and in particular, one positioned near the transom, to be as close to the action as possible. Further, the aft-facing seat should be one that can be safely occupied while the boat is moving. Seating in these locations and in these configurations may also be used for lounging, and the seating may be designed with various features to enhance an occupant's comfort when seated in the seats.
- In one aspect, the invention relates to a boat including a hull, an aft-facing seat, and a plurality of handles. The hull includes a bow, a transom, and port and starboard sides. The aft-facing seat is positioned proximate to the transom and includes a seat bottom that is inclined at a downward angle in a direction extending from aft to fore. One of the plurality of handles is positioned at an outboard side of the aft-facing seat and another one of the handles positioned an inboard side of the aft-facing seat.
- In another aspect, the invention relates to a boat including a hull and an aft-facing seat. The hull includes a bow, a transom, and port and starboard sides. The aft-facing seat is positioned proximate to the transom and includes a seat bottom, a seatback, a headrest, and a seat support structure having at least one hidden compartment therein. The aft-facing seat also includes at least one pivot mechanism attached to the seatback and the headrest and configured to allow: (1) the seatback to move between a first position in which the seatback is capable of supporting the back of a person seated in the seat and a second position in which the seatback is pivoted upwardly to allow access to the compartment; and (2) the headrest to move between an upright position and a folded position.
- In a further aspect, the invention relates to a boat including a hull, an aft-facing seat, and a plurality of handles. The hull includes a bow, a transom, and port and starboard sides. The aft-facing seat is positioned proximate to the transom and includes a seat bottom, a seatback, a headrest, and a seat support structure having at least one hidden compartment therein. The seat bottom is inclined at a downward angle in a direction extending from aft to fore. The aft-facing seat also includes at least one pivot mechanism attached to the seatback and the headrest and configured to allow: (1) the seatback to move between a first position in which the seatback is capable of supporting the back of a person seated in the seat and a second position in which the seatback is pivoted upwardly to allow access to the compartment; and (2) the headrest to move between an upright position and a folded position. One of the plurality of handles is positioned at an outboard side of the aft-facing seat and another one of the handles positioned an inboard side of the aft-facing seat.
- In still another aspect, the invention relates to a boat including a hull, a plurality of aft-facing seats, and a plurality of handles associated with each aft-facing seat. The hull includes a bow, a transom, and port and starboard sides. A first aft-facing seat is positioned port of a centerline of the boat and proximate to the transom, and a second aft-facing seat is positioned starboard of the centerline of the boat and proximate to the transom. Each aft-facing seat includes a seat bottom, a seatback, a headrest, and a seat support structure having at least one hidden compartment therein. The seat bottom is inclined at a downward angle in a direction extending from aft to fore. Each aft-facing seat also includes at least one pivot mechanism attached to the seatback and the headrest and configured to allow: (1) the seatback to move between a first position in which the seatback is capable of supporting the back of a person seated in the seat and a second position in which the seatback is pivoted upwardly to allow access to the compartment; and (2) the headrest to move between an upright position and a folded position. One of the plurality of handles is positioned at an outboard side of each aft-facing seat and another one of the handles positioned an inboard side of each aft-facing seat.
- In yet another aspect, the invention relates to a boat including a hull, a seat support structure, and an aft-facing seat. The hull includes a bow, a transom, port and starboard sides, and port and starboard gunwales. The seat support structure has at least one hidden compartment therein. The aft-facing seat is positioned proximate to the transom and supported by the seat support structure. The aft-facing seat includes a seat bottom and a seat back. The seat bottom is movable between a first position and a second position. When the seat bottom is in the first position, the seat bottom is inclined at a downward angle in a direction extending from aft to fore and a majority of the seat bottom is positioned forward of the transom. The second position is a position in which the seat bottom is pivoted upwardly relative to the position of the seat bottom in the first position to allow access to the compartment. The seatback joins the seat bottom at an intersecting location. When the seat bottom is in the first position, the intersecting location is forward of the transom and below the gunwales. The aft-facing seat may further include a leg rest extending aft of the seat bottom that is inclined at a downward angle in a direction extending from fore to aft.
- In yet a further aspect, the invention relates to a boat including a hull and an aft-facing seat. The hull includes a bow, a transom, and port and starboard sides. The aft-facing seat is positioned proximate to the transom. The aft-facing seat includes a seat bottom and a leg rest. The leg rest extends aft of the transom.
- In still a further aspect, the invention relates to a boat including a hull and a seat. The hull includes a bow and port and starboard sides. The seat includes a seat bottom and a leg rest. The leg rest extends in a direction that is at a downward angle relative to the seat bottom. The leg rest having a length such that a gap is present between the leg rest and a surface beneath the leg rest.

Relative to the boat, forward is a direction towards the bow, and aft is a direction towards the stern. Likewise, inboard is a direction toward the center of the boat and outboard is a direction away from it.

FIG. 1 shows aboat 100 equipped with a pair of aft-facingseats boat 100 includes ahull 110 with abow 112, atransom 114, aport side 116, and astarboard side 118. The port andstarboard sides starboard gunwales bow 112, thetransom 114, and the port andstarboard sides boat 100. Within the boat's interior 120 is acontrol console 126 for operating theboat 100 and afloor 128. Typically, thefloor 128 is oriented in a plane that is parallel with the horizontal plane of theboat 100. - The
boat 100 is also preferably equipped with at least one apparatus for towing a watersports performer. The apparatus may include, for example, atower 132 equipped with atow point 134 for towing a watersports performer such as a wakeboarder. Thetow point 134 may include, for example, an integrated light and tow-line-attachment assembly such as described in U.S. Pat. No. 6,539,886. Other devices may be attached to thetower 132 including, for example, speakers and racks for holding wakeboards. Theboat 100 may also be equipped with aski pylon 136 for towing a watersports performer such as a water skier. -
FIGS. 3 and 4 show aninboard boat 100, which uses amotor 142 to drive apropeller 144 that is located under thehull 110 and forward of thetransom 114. Inboard boats are often preferred for watersports because thepropeller 144 is positioned underneath theboat 100 and away from watersports performers and swimmers. As shown inFIGS. 1 and 2 , amotor box 150, located in the stern 102 of theboat 100, houses themotor 142. Preferably, themotor 142 and themotor box 150 are positioned proximate to thetransom 114 to increase the displacement into the water of the stern 102 of thehull 110 for watersports such as wakeboarding and surfing. Anysuitable motor 142 may be used, including the MV8 5.7 L engine manufactured by Ilmor Marine of Mooresville, N.C. Themotor 142 is preferably positioned along the center line of theboat 100, thus leaving room between themotor 142 and the port andstarboard sides hull 110 for compartments 250 (see, e.g.,FIGS. 7 and 8 ). - The
boat 100 includes ahorizontal swim platform 160 attached to thetransom 114 to make it easier for people to get into the water from theboat 100 or out of the water into theboat 100. Theswim platform 160 should be capable of supporting a human, and is preferably capable of supporting at least 500 lbs., and even more preferably 1250 lbs. When supporting a person, the person can stand or sit, for example, on anupper surface 166 of theswim platform 160. Theswim platform 160 may be constructed from any suitable material that may be used in a marine environment including, for example, fiberglass and teak. In this embodiment, theswim platform 160 is attached to thetransom 114 of theboat 100 using twobrackets 162. In this embodiment, the fasteners used to attach thebrackets 162 to theswim platform 160 and thetransom 114 are screws; however, any suitable means of attachment known in the art may be used, including, but not limited to, bolts, rivets, welding, adhesive, and the like. Alternatively, thebrackets 162 may be integrally formed into either theswim platform 160 or thetransom 114 of theboat 100. Similarly, theswim platform 160 may be attached to thetransom 114 by any suitable means and is not limited to the use ofbrackets 162. While theswim platform 160 is described as an attachable/detachable platform, it is not so limited. For example, theswim platform 160 may be integrally formed with the stern 102 of theboat 100. - The pair of aft-facing
seats boat 100.FIG. 2 is a top view of the stern 102 of theboat 100 showing the pair of aft-facingseats FIG. 3 is a cross-sectional view of the stern 102 of theboat 100 taken along line 3-3 inFIG. 2 . A port-side aft-facing seat 202 (“port seat”) is located on the port side of the centerline of theboat 100, and a starboard-side aft-facing seat 204 (“starboard seat”) is located on the starboard side of the centerline of theboat 100. As shown in this embodiment, the person faces directly aft when the seat is occupied; that is, the plane of aseatback 220 of the aft-facingseat boat 100. However, the aft-facingseats seatback 220 up to and including 45° relative to the centerline of theboat 100. - The aft-facing
seats boat 100 is either moving or at rest. Preferably, the aft-facingseats boat 100 is moving at speeds appropriate for watersports such as water skiing (from 28 mph to 36 mph), wakeboarding (from 18 mph to 26 mph), and wake surfing (from 8 mph to 14 mph). As will be apparent from the discussion below, there are a number of features of theboat 100 that enable a person to safely occupy the aft-facingseats boat 100 is moving. Those skilled in the art will recognize that each of these features may be used in various combinations to achieve this non-limiting objective of the invention. - The pair of aft-facing
seats FIGS. 7 and 8 ) which, in this embodiment, is themotor box 150. Each aft-facingseat seat bottom 210 and aseatback 220. Theseat bottom 210 and theseatback 220 each have a structural member with a cushion covering the structural member. Preferably, the cushions are constructed from a soft, but supportive, material, such as triple-density foam, and are covered with a waterproof material, such as premium grade vinyl. Although they may be separate pieces, in this embodiment, the seat bottom structural member and the seatback structural member are an integral piece (collectively referred to as a seat structural member). The seat structural member may be made from any structural material suitable for the marine environment and capable of supporting the weight of an adult. Because the aft-facingseats intersecting point 212. The angle α (seeFIG. 5 ) between a top surface of theseat bottom 210 and an aft-facing surface of theseatback 220 is set so that a person can comfortably sit in theseat - The aft-facing
seats transom 114 of theboat 100. In the embodiment shown inFIGS. 1-8 , the aft-facingseats transom 114, and in particular, theseat bottom 210 is positioned above thetransom 114. While seated in one of the aft-facingseats transom 114, as shown inFIG. 3 , and his or her legs extend aft, over thetransom 114. - One feature of the aft-facing
seats seats boat 100 is moving, is the positioning of the occupant's hips while seated. When seated, the occupant's hips are preferably positioned forward of thetransom 114 and lower than thegunwales intersecting point 212 of theport seat 202 is forward of thetransom 114 and lower than theport gunwale 122, and theintersecting point 212 of thestarboard seat 204 is forward of thetransom 114 and lower than thestarboard gunwale 124. The amount by which theintersecting point 212 is lower than thegunwales 122, 124 (as measured to the top of the seat cushions) is preferably from 10 inches to 16 inches, which is similar to level of the seats in the boat's interior 120 relative to thegunwales - Another feature of the aft-facing
seats seats boat 100 is moving, is the inclination of theseat bottom 210. Theseat bottom 210 is inclined at a downward angle β in a direction extending from aft to fore. This inclination helps keep the occupant pressed against the back of the aft-facingseat boat 100 is moving. Because thebow 112 of theboat 100 may rise as theboat 100 accelerates and moves through the water, the angle β of theseat bottom 210 preferably compensates for the inclination of theboat 100 to maintain a downward angle while theboat 100 is in motion. Preferably, the downward angle β of theseat bottom 210 is from 5° to 20° relative to thefloor 128 of theboat 100, more preferably 18° relative to thefloor 128. - As shown in
FIG. 3 , theboat 100 includes a pair offootrests footrest seats footrest 412 is on the port side of the centerline of theboat 100 and positioned below theseat bottom 210 of theport seat 202. Theother footrest 414 is on the starboard side of the centerline of theboat 100 and positioned below theseat bottom 210 of thestarboard seat 204. When a person sits in the aft-facingseat upper surface 416 of the associatedfootrest upper surface 416 of thefootrest footrest seat seat boat 100 is in operation. Theupper surface 416 of thefootrest upper surface 416 being higher than the foremost part of theupper surface 416. Theupper surface 416 is preferably inclined from 10° to 50° relative to thefloor 128 of theboat 100. - The
footrests seat upper surface 416 of thefootrest FIGS. 1 and 2 , theport footrest 412 is in the retracted position and thestarboard footrest 414 is in the extended position. InFIGS. 1-4 , for example, thefootrest footrest transom 114 and is generally perpendicular to thetransom 114. In the retracted position, thefootrest transom 114. -
FIG. 4 shows an alternative arrangement where, instead of the occupant of the aft-facingseat footrest swim platform 160. In this case, theswim platform 160 is preferably designed to havecomfortable footrest 164 below each of the aft-facingseats footrests footrest 164 on theswim platform 160 is preferably inclined with the aftmost part of thefootrest 164 being higher than the foremost part of thefootrest 164. - As shown in
FIGS. 1 and 2 , theboat 100 is further equipped with a plurality ofhandles seats boat 100 is moving. Thesehandles handles seats seat handle 420 is at an outboard side of each aft-facingseat other handle 430 is at an inboard side of each aft-facingseat handles seatback 220 such that they can be comfortably grasped by a person with their arms bent at the elbows. Preferably, bothhandles outboard handle 420 is at substantially the same height as the top of thegunwales inboard handle 430 is located on themotor box 150 adjacent to the aft-facingseat handles boat 100 to avoid interference with theseat bottom 210 andseatback 220 when they are moved upward to their second position (as discussed below). Thehandles seat bottom 210 or be designed to move with theseat bottom 210 andseatback 220. - In addition to being designed to be safely occupied while the
boat 100 is moving, the aft-facingseats headrest 230 and the ability to be move theseat bottom 210 and/or theseatback 220 in order access compartments 250 below and/or behind the aft-facingseats - In the preferred embodiment shown in
FIGS. 1-8 , each aft-facingseat headrest 230. Theheadrest 230 is moveable between an upright position and a folded position.FIGS. 1-5 and 7 show theheadrest 230 in the folded position andFIGS. 6 and 8 show theheadrest 230 in the upright position. Like theseat bottom 210 and theseatback 220, in this embodiment, theheadrest 230 is made from a cushion covered with a premium grade vinyl supported by a structural member. Theheadrest 230 is attached to twopivot mechanisms 302, 304 (discussed further below) to pivot between the upright and folded positions. - As discussed above, the
boat 100 preferably includes twocompartments 250 on either side of themotor 142. Watersports performers often use theswim platform 160 to put on and adjust their equipment, for example: tow ropes, life jackets, water skis, wakeboards, etc. By allowing access to thesecompartments 250 from theswim platform 160, thesecompartments 250 can conveniently be used to store equipment for watersports performers. Each aft-facingseat compartment 250 from theswim platform 160. In this embodiment, theseatback 220 is pivotable between a first position, in which theseatback 220 is capable of supporting the back of a person seated in the aft-facingseat seatback 220 is pivoted upwardly to allow access to thecompartment 250. Theseat bottom 210 is also movable between a first position, in which theseat bottom 210 is capable of supporting the bottom of a person seated in the aft-facingseat seatback 220 is pivoted upwardly to allow access to the portion of thecompartment 250 below theseat bottom 210. In this embodiment, theseat bottom 210 andseatback 220 pivot together because they are integrally formed, but in other embodiments, they can be moved separately, or only one of theseat bottom 210 and theseatback 220 may be moveable.FIGS. 1-6 show theseatback 220 in the first position, andFIGS. 7 and 8 show theseatback 220 in the second position. - The
seat bottom 210 and theseatback 220 pivot between the first and second position using a pair ofpivot mechanisms FIGS. 5-10 , thepivot mechanisms headrest 230 are thesame pivot mechanisms seatback 220. Afirst pivot mechanism 302 is located on an inboard side of theseat support structure 240 and asecond pivot mechanism 304 is located on an outboard side of theseat support structure 240. Both the first andsecond pivot mechanisms second pivot mechanism 304 of thestarboard seat 204 applies equally to thefirst pivot mechanism 302 of thestarboard seat 204, as well as to bothpivot mechanisms port seat 202. - As shown in
FIGS. 9 and 10 , thesecond pivot mechanism 304 of thestarboard seat 204 has three brackets: abase bracket 310, abackrest bracket 320, and aheadrest bracket 330. All threebrackets base bracket 310 has afirst surface 312 which is mounted to theseat support structure 240 using fasteners. In this embodiment, the fasteners used to attach thebase bracket 310 to theseat support structure 240 are screws; however, any suitable means of attachment known in the art may be used including bolts, rivets, welding, adhesive, and the like. Thebase bracket 310 is mounted near the top of thesupport structure 240 and near both theseatback 220 and theheadrest 230. Thebase bracket 310 also has asecond surface 314 which is generally perpendicular to thefirst surface 312 to form the L-shape of the bracket. Both thebackrest bracket 320 and theheadrest bracket 330 are pivotably connected to thesecond surface 314 of thebase bracket 310. - The
backrest bracket 320 also includes a first surface 322 and asecond surface 324, which is generally perpendicular to the first surface 322. The first surface 322 of thebackrest bracket 320 is connected to theseatback 220. In this embodiment, the first surface 322 is directly connected to theseatback 220 using fasteners, including, for example, screws; however, any suitable means of attachment known in the art may be used including bolts, rivets, welding, adhesive, and the like. Thesecond surface 324 of thebackrest bracket 320 is pivotably connected to thebase bracket 310. In this embodiment, the pivotable connection is made using apin 326, such as the shank of a rivet, but any suitable pivotable connection may be used. Thepin 326 is inserted through holes formed on both thesecond surface 314 of thebase bracket 310 and thesecond surface 324 of thebackrest bracket 320. Both holes are located on a side of thesecond surfaces first surfaces 312, 322. This configuration allows thebackrest bracket 320 to freely pivot about the pivotable connection between the first position (seeFIG. 9 ) and the second position (seeFIG. 10 ), and allows thebackrest bracket 320 to nest above thebase bracket 310 in the first position, as shown inFIGS. 5, 6, and 9 . - The aft-facing
seats seat bottom 210 and theseatback 220 and hold them in the second position. Such features may include, for example,pneumatic cylinders 260. One end of eachpneumatic cylinder 260 may be attached to theseat support structure 240 and the other may be attached to theseatback 220, as shown inFIGS. 7 and 8 . - Similar to the
base bracket 310 and thebackrest bracket 320, theheadrest bracket 330 includes afirst surface 332 and asecond surface 334, which is generally perpendicular to thefirst surface 332. Thefirst surface 332 of theheadrest bracket 330 is connected to theheadrest 230. In this embodiment, thefirst surface 332 is directly connected to theheadrest 230 using fasteners, including, for example, screws; however any suitable means of attachment known in the art may be used including bolts, rivets, welding, adhesive, and the like. Thesecond surface 334 of theheadrest bracket 330 is elongated with one end pivotally connected to thebase bracket 310. Theheadrest 230 andheadrest bracket 330 pivot about this pivotable connection to move between the folded and the upright positions. Preferably, the pivotable connection is designed to hold theheadrest 230 in the upright position. - In this embodiment, the
headrest bracket 330 is pivotably connected to thebase bracket 310 by twopins first pin 336 and asecond pin 338. Thefirst pin 336 engages afirst slot 316 formed in thesecond surface 314 of thebase bracket 310, and thesecond pin 338 engages with asecond slot 318 formed in thesecond surface 314 of thebase bracket 310. In this embodiment, the first andsecond pins second slots - The
first slot 316 is generally linear and oriented along a first linear path. In this embodiment, the first linear path is generally parallel to a bottom surface of the structural member of theheadrest 230 in the upright position. Thefirst slot 316 has two ends, an upper end and a lower end. The upper end is closer to theheadrest 230 than the lower end. - In this embodiment, the
second slot 318 is located farther from theheadrest 230 than thefirst slot 316 is from theheadrest 230. Thesecond slot 318 has two portions, alinear portion 318 a and acurved portion 318 b. Thelinear portion 318 a of thesecond slot 318 is oriented along a line that is parallel to the first linear path. Preferably, thelinear portion 318 a of thesecond slot 318 is co-linear with thefirst slot 316; that is, both thefirst slot 316 and thelinear portion 318 a of thesecond slot 318 are oriented along the first linear path. Thelinear portion 318 a of thesecond slot 318 has two ends, an upper end and a lower end. The upper end is the end closest to thefirst slot 316. Thecurved portion 318 b of thesecond slot 318 extends from the upper end of thelinear portion 318 a and extends in a direction away from thefirst surface 312 of thebase bracket 310. Thecurved portion 318 b of thesecond slot 318 also has two ends, an upper end and a lower end. The lower end of thecurved portion 318 b is the upper end of thelinear portion 318 a. - The first and
second pins second slots headrest 230 to move between the folded and the upright positions. Starting in the folded position, thefirst pin 336 is located in the upper end of thefirst slot 316 and thesecond pin 338 is located in the upper end of thecurved portion 318 b of thesecond slot 318. Thefirst pin 336 andsecond pin 338 are set at a constant distance apart. Thecurved portion 318 b is curved with a radius centered on the upper end of thefirst slot 316 and equal to the distance between thefirst pin 336 and thesecond pin 338. To move theheadrest 230 from the folded position (shown inFIG. 5 ), a user lifts theheadrest 230 and rotates it to the upright position (shown inFIGS. 6 and 8 ). Theheadrest bracket 330 is shown in the folded position inFIG. 9 . As theheadrest 230 is raised, theheadrest bracket 330 pivots about thefirst pin 336, and thesecond pin 338 slides from the upper end of thecurved portion 318 b of thesecond slot 318 to the lower end of thecurved portion 318 b of thesecond slot 318. As a result, thesecond pin 338 is now located in the upper end of thelinear portion 318 a of thesecond slot 318. This position of theheadrest bracket 330 is shown inFIG. 10 . - To hold the
headrest 230 in the upright position, the first andsecond pins first slot 316 and thelinear portion 318 a of thesecond slot 318, respectively. Gravity assists in keeping the first andsecond pins headrest bracket 330 is prevented from rotating about thefirst pin 336 back to the folded position. - To move the
headrest 230 from the upright position to the folded position, the process described above is reversed. A user lifts theheadrest 230 to slide thefirst pin 336 from the lower end to the upper end of thefirst slot 316 and to slide thesecond pin 338 from the lower end to the upper end of thelinear portion 318 a of thesecond slot 318. Then theheadrest 230 andheadrest bracket 330 are pivoted about thefirst pin 336, as thesecond pin 338 moves from the lower end of thecurved portion 318 b of thesecond slot 318 to the upper end of thecurved portion 318 b of thesecond slot 318. - Another pair of aft-facing
seats FIG. 11 . A port-side aft-facing seat 502 (“port seat”) is located on the port side of the centerline of theboat 100, and a starboard-side aft-facing seat 504 (“starboard seat”) is located on the starboard side of the centerline of theboat 100. The pair of aft-facingseats seats - As with the pair of aft-facing
seats seats structural member 510 that is generally L-shaped and constructed from a lightweight material, such as polyethylene, and made by rotomolding (also known as rotocasting). The seatstructural member 510 has alower portion 512 and anupper portion 514. Each of thelower portion 512 and theupper portion 514 have anupper surface seat bottom 210 and theseatback 220, respectively. - In this embodiment, the
seatback 220 is moveable between a reclined position and an upright position. InFIG. 11 , theport seat 502 is in the reclined position and thestarboard seat 504 is in an upright position.FIGS. 12 and 13 are side views of thestarboard seat 504 taken from the taken from the perspective of line 3-3 inFIG. 2 .FIG. 12 shows theseatback 220 in the reclined position, andFIG. 13 shows theseatback 220 in the upright position. In the reclined position, theseatback 220 is supported by theupper surface 518 of theupper portion 514 and the upper surface of theseatback 220 is generally parallel to theupper surface 518 of theupper portion 514. Likewise, the upper surface of theseat bottom 210 is generally parallel to theupper surface 516 of thelower portion 512. As discussed in the first embodiment, an angle α formed between theupper surface 516 of thelower portion 512 and theupper surface 518 of theupper portion 514 is preferably set so that a person can sit comfortably in a reclined position in theport seat 502 or thestarboard seat 504. - In this embodiment, the
seatback 220 is moveable between the reclined position and a plurality of upright positions. To move from the reclined position to an upright position, theseatback 220 is pivoted toward theseat bottom 210 about a pivot located at the intersecting point 212 (direction A inFIG. 14 ). In an upright position, the angle α between theseat bottom 210 and theseatback 220 is less than it is in the reclined position, and an angle γ is formed between theupper surface 518 of theupper portion 514 of the seatstructural member 510. In this embodiment, twopivot mechanisms 522 are used to pivot theseatback 220 between the reclined and upright positions, one on the inboard side of theseatback 220 and one on the outboard side of theseatback 220. Although anysuitable pivot mechanism 522 may be used, thepivot mechanisms 522 of this embodiment are ratchet hinges similar to the Command Ratchet Hinges made by Taco Marine of Miami, Fla. - The
seatback 220 is raised to a first predetermined angle of angle γ, such as 36 degrees, for example, after which the hinge engages and holds theseatback 220 in an upright position and prevents theseatback 220 from returning to the reclined position. Below the first predetermined angle, thepivot mechanism 522 does not hold theseatback 220 in an upright position and theseatback 220 will return to the reclined position when theseatback 220 is released. To move theseatback 220 to other upright positions of the plurality of upright positions beyond the first predetermined angle, theseatback 220 is pivoted farther toward theseat bottom 210 in direction A. - To release the
seatback 220 and allow it to return to the reclined position, theseatback 220 is pivoted toward theseat bottom 210 to an angle that exceeds a second predetermined angle of angle γ, in this embodiment 90 degrees. Once theseatback 220 is pivoted to an angle that exceeds the second predetermined angle, theseatback 220 is free to pivot away from the seat bottom 210 (a direction opposite direction A) and return to the reclined position.FIG. 14 shows theseatback 220 moved to second predetermined angle which is the release point of thepivot mechanisms 522. - Each of the
port seat 502 and thestarboard seat 504 of the second embodiment includes aleg rest 530. Theleg rest 530 may also be considered a footrest and have a length with an appropriately sized and located cushion to support the feet of a person seated in theport seat 502 or thestarboard seat 504; however, this component will be referred to as a leg rest herein to distinguish it from theport footrest 412 and thestarboard footrest 414 described in the first embodiment. - The
leg rest 530 of this embodiment is movable between an extended position and a retracted position. InFIG. 11 , theleg rest 530 corresponding to theport seat 502 is shown in the extended position, and theleg rest 530 corresponding to thestarboard seat 504 is shown in the retracted position. Similarly, theleg rest 530 corresponding to theport seat 502 is shown in the extended position inFIG. 15 .FIGS. 17-20 show theleg rest 530 in the extended position. Theleg rest 530 includes acushion 532 having anupper surface 534 which supports the legs of the person seated in theport seat 502 or thestarboard seat 504. Thecushion 532 of theleg rest 530 is adjacent to the cushion of theseat bottom 210 and extends outward from theseat bottom 210 in a direction away from theseatback 220. Thecushion 532 of theleg rest 530 also extends at a downward angle relative to theseat bottom 210. In particular, theupper surface 534 of thecushion 532 of theleg rest 530 forms an angle δ with the upper surface of the seat bottom 210 (seeFIG. 19 ). The downward angle (angle δ) of thecushion 532 may be set at any suitable angle to comfortably support a person's legs and feet. In this embodiment angle δ is preferably between 205 degrees and 240 degrees. - In this embodiment, as in the first embodiment, the aft-facing
seats transom 114, with theseat bottom 210 positioned above the transom 114 (seeFIGS. 11 and 15 ). While seated in one of the aft-facingseats transom 114, and thus, in this embodiment, theleg rest 530 extends aft of thetransom 114 at a downward angle extending from fore to aft. - As will be detailed further below, the
leg rest 530 of this embodiment is supported on its upper side and is not supported by a surface underneath it. In this embodiment, with theleg rest 530 extending aft from thetransom 114, theleg rest 530 extends over theswim platform 160 and theleg rest 530 is thus not supported by theupper surface 166 of theswim platform 160, which is underneath theleg rest 530. Theleg rest 530 has a length that is such that agap 506 is present between the lower, aft end of thecushion 532 of theleg rest 530 and theupper surface 166 of theswim platform 160. - As can be seen in
FIGS. 16 and 17 , thecushion 532 is supported by a structural support or structural member(s). In this embodiment, the structural support of theleg rest 530 comprises a pair of circular, hollow, stainless steel tubes 542 (referred to herein as support tubes 542). The geometry of these structural members is not so limited, and instead, any other suitable configuration, shape, and material of construction may be used, including a beam, rod, or the like. Thesupport tubes 542 are positioned parallel to each other, and eachsupport tube 542 is generally L-shaped. Afirst leg 542 a of the L-shape is located underneath thecushion 532 and parallel to theupper surface 534 of thecushion 532, and thecushion 532 is attached to an upper surface of thefirst leg 542 a. Asecond leg 542 b of the L-shape is located generally parallel to the upper surface of theseat bottom 210 when theleg rest 530 is in the extended position. Thesecond legs 542 b of eachsupport tube 542 are connected to each other by a connectingtube 544, which, in this embodiment, is connected orthogonally to eachsecond leg 542 b in the middle of eachsecond leg 542 b. As with thesupport tubes 542, the connectingtube 544 of this embodiment is a circular, hollow, stainless steel tube, but the geometry is not so limited, and instead, any other suitable configuration, shape, and material of construction may be used, including a beam, rod, or the like. - In this embodiment, the
leg rest 530 rotates to move between the extended position and the retracted position. The end of thesecond leg 542 b that is located away from thecushion 532 is pivotably attached to the underside of theseat bottom 210 by apivot mechanism 546. Any suitable pivotable connection may be used, but in this embodiment apin 546 a is used to connect thesecond leg 542 b of thesupport tube 542 to an L-bracket 546 b attached to the underside of theseat bottom 210. Although in this embodiment thesupport tube 542 is pivotably attached to theseat bottom 210, the invention is not so limited, and theleg rest 530, and in particular thesupport tubes 542, may be pivotably attached to other suitable locations including, for example, theseat support structure 240 or the seatstructural member 510. -
FIG. 16 shows theleg rest 530 in the retracted position. In the retracted position, thesecond leg 542 b extends along the underside of the seatstructural member 510 in a direction from thepivot mechanism 546 toward theseatback 220. In this embodiment, the L-shape of thesupport tube 542 is fixed, and thus, in the retracted position, thecushion 532 extends upward and forward under theupper portion 514 of the seatstructural member 510. - As in the first embodiment, the seat
structural member 510 is pivotable between a first position in which theseat bottom 210 and theseatback 220 are capable of supporting a person seated in the aft-facingseat structural member 510, including theseat bottom 210 and theseatback 220, is pivoted upwardly to allow access to thecompartment 250. With the seatstructural member 510 in the first position, theleg rest 530, when in the retracted position, is located within thecompartment 250. Positioning theleg rest 530 on the underside of the seatstructural member 510 not only facilitates moving theleg rest 530 to the extended position (as will be discussed below), but minimizes the interference between theleg rest 530 and items stored in thecompartment 250. - The
leg rest 530 is movable from the retracted position to the extended position when the seatstructural member 510 is in the second position. InFIG. 15 , thestarboard seat 504 is shown in the second position. As the seatstructural member 510 is moved upward in direction B from the first position to the second position, a locking mechanism 550 (first locking mechanism 550) is used to hold theleg rest 530 under the seatstructural member 510 and prevent theleg rest 530 from swinging downward. In this embodiment, thelocking mechanism 550 includes alatch 552 attached to the underside of thelower portion 512 of the seat structural member 510 (seeFIG. 16 ). Thelatch 552 engages with and latches the connectingtube 544 to hold theleg rest 530. - The
locking mechanism 550 is not limited to a latch, and anysuitable locking mechanism 550 may be used. For example, analternative locking mechanism 550 is shown inFIG. 18 . Thelocking mechanism 550 shown inFIG. 18 includes a magnet 554 (a first magnet 554) and an attractedmember 556. Themagnet 554 is a permanent magnet in this embodiment. The attractedmember 556 may be any suitable material that is attracted to and held by themagnet 554; such materials include, for example, ferromagnetic materials or even a second magnet arranged such that the polarity of thesecond magnet 556 is attracted to thefirst magnet 554. In this embodiment, themagnet 554 is located on thelower portion 512 of the seatstructural member 510, and the attractedmember 556 is located on the connectingtube 544 of theleg rest 530. But, these components may also be reversed with the attractedmember 556 being located on the seatstructural member 510 and themagnet 554 being located on theleg rest 530. - Once the seat
structural member 510 is in the second position, as shown inFIG. 15 , a user disengages thelocking mechanism 550 and pivots theleg rest 530 about the pivot axis of thepivot mechanism 546 to rotate theleg rest 530 in direction C to the extended position. Another locking mechanism 558 (second locking mechanism 558) is used to hold theleg rest 530 in the extended position. Thesecond locking mechanism 558 is the same as thelocking mechanism 550 in the embodiments shown inFIGS. 15-18 . The latch 552 (ormagnet 554 or attracted member 556) is attached to the underside of theseat bottom 210 in this embodiment. As shown inFIG. 17 , thelatch 552 of thesecond locking mechanism 558 engages with the connectingtube 544 to hold theleg rest 530 in the extended position. The seatstructural member 510 includes aU-shaped cutout 524. Thecutout 524 enables thesupport tubes 542 to be positioned on the underside of theseat bottom 210 in the extended position. - After engaging the
leg rest 530 with thesecond locking mechanism 558, the user then lowers the seatstructural member 510 to the first position. With the seatstructural member 510 in the first position, a person can sit in thestarboard seat 504.FIGS. 19 and 20 show a person seated in thestarboard seat 504 with the leg rest in the extended position. InFIG. 19 , theseatback 220 is in the reclined position, and inFIG. 20 theseatback 220 is in an upright position. To move from the extended position to the retracted position, the process is reversed. - The
leg rest 530 shown inFIGS. 15-18 is movable between the extended and retracted positions by rotation. The movement of theleg rest 530 is not so limited, however, and any suitable mechanism and movement may be used to move theleg rest 530 between the extended position and the retracted position. For example, thecushion 532 may slide in direction D, as shown inFIG. 21 , to move from the retracted position to the extended position. Any suitable sliding mechanism may be used, including, for example, a rail system or telescoping tubes. - Although the
seats seats leg rest 530, may be used in other locations within the boat. For example, theleg rest 530 may be used in seats located in aprimary seating area 121 located within theinterior 120 of theboat 100. When located in another location, such as the primary seating area, theleg rest 530 in the extended position is positioned with thegap 506 being relative to an upper surface of the deck of theboat 100, such as thefloor 128, instead of theupper surface 166 of theswim platform 160. - While the forgoing discussion references certain materials, those skilled in the art will recognize that any material suitable for use in a marine environment and having other suitable characteristics for performing the functions discuss above (for example, strength and wear resistance) may be used in this invention.
- Although this invention has been described with respect to certain specific exemplary embodiments, many additional modifications and variations will be apparent to those skilled in the art in light of this disclosure. It is, therefore, to be understood that this invention may be practiced otherwise than as specifically described. Thus, the exemplary embodiments of the invention should be considered in all respects to be illustrative and not restrictive, and the scope of the invention to be determined by any claims supportable by this application and the equivalents thereof, rather than by the foregoing description.
Claims (21)
1-20. (canceled)
21. A boat comprising:
a hull including a bow and port and starboard sides;
a seat including a seat bottom and a leg rest, the leg rest extending in a direction that is away from the seat bottom from a proximal portion nearest the seat bottom to a distal end farthest from the seat bottom, the leg rest being supported at the proximal portion and a gap being provided between the distal end of the leg rest and a surface beneath the leg rest such that the leg rest is not supported by the surface underneath the leg rest.
22. The boat of claim 21 , wherein the seat is located in the stern of the boat and is aft-facing.
23. The boat of claim 21 , further comprising a deck, wherein the surface beneath the leg rest is an upper surface of a portion of the deck.
24. The boat of claim 21 , further comprising a swim platform, wherein the surface beneath the leg rest is an upper surface of the swim platform.
25. The boat of claim 24 , wherein the hull further includes a transom, the swim platform is attached to the transom, the seat is positioned proximate to the transom, and the leg rest extends aft of the transom.
26. The boat of claim 21 , wherein the leg rest includes an upper surface, and the seat bottom includes an upper surface, and the upper surface of the leg rest is inclined at an oblique angle relative to the upper surface of the seat bottom.
27. The boat of claim 26 , wherein the upper surface of the leg rest is inclined at a downward angle relative to the upper surface of the seat bottom.
28. The boat of claim 21 , wherein the leg rest is movable between an extended position and a retracted position, and the leg rest extends away from the seat bottom in the extended position.
29. The boat of claim 28 , wherein the leg rest is configured to slide when moving between the extended position and the retracted position.
30. The boat of claim 28 , wherein the leg rest is configured to pivot about a pivot axis when moving between the extended position and the retracted position.
31. The boat of claim 28 , wherein the leg rest is positioned underneath the seat bottom in the retracted position.
32. The boat of claim 31 , wherein the seat bottom is movable between a first position and a second position and the leg rest is movable between the extended position and the retracted position when the seat bottom is in the second position.
33. The boat of claim 32 , wherein the second position is a position in which the seat bottom is pivoted upwardly relative to the position of the seat bottom in the first position.
34. A boat comprising:
a hull including a bow, a transom, and port and starboard sides;
a seat support structure having at least one hidden compartment therein; and
a seat supported by the seat support structure, the seat including:
a seat bottom movable between a first position and a second position, the second position being a position in which the seat bottom allows access to the compartment; and
a leg rest extending in a direction away from the seat bottom.
35. The boat of claim 34 , wherein the seat is located in the stern of the boat and is aft-facing.
36. The boat of claim 34 , wherein the second position is a position in which the seat bottom is pivoted upwardly relative to the position of the seat bottom in the first position.
37. The boat of claim 34 , wherein the leg rest includes an upper surface, the seat bottom includes an upper surface, and the upper surface of the leg rest being inclined at a downward angle relative to the upper surface of the seat bottom.
38. The boat of claim 34 , wherein the leg rest is movable between an extended position and a retracted position when the seat bottom is in the second position.
39. The boat of claim 38 , wherein the leg rest is configured to pivot about a pivot axis when moving between the extended position and the retracted position.
40. The boat of claim 38 , wherein, in the retracted position, the leg rest is located within the hidden compartment.
