Application March 6, 1935, Serial No. 9,678 24 Claims. (01. 2as 9s) The present invention relates to an improved regulator for heatingdeviccs and more particularly to means automatically operable for conserving and utilizing heat generated in a furnace, boiler, oil burner, or the like.
An important object of the invention is to provide the flue pipe or stack of a heating device with simple, eiiicient and economical means, operable in response to variations in temperature of the heated gases passing through the flue pipe, to prevent the withdrawal of the heated gases from the heating. device before the gases have had suflicient time to transfer their heat to the heating device, thus insuring the utilization of a substantial portion of the heated gases which would otherwise be dissipated.
A further object consists in associating with a heating device such as a water boiler, steam boiler or warm air furnace, a combined stack limit and damper control means movably positioned within-the stack and operableby variations in the heat of the gases passing through the stack, said means being operatively connected to an air or draft damper whereby when the heat of the gases in the stack exceeds a predetermined temperature, to automatically actuate the control means so as to move the latter to retard the flow of the heated gases through the pipe and simultaneously close the air controlled damper. Conversely when the temperature of the gases in the stack falls below a predetermined temperature, the control means is moved to permit the uninterrupted flow of the heated gases through the pipe and simultaneously operate the air controlled damper. In other words, I provide means for controlling draft by the temperature of the flue gases instead of by the temperature of the water in a water boiler, the pressure of steam in a steam boiler, or by the temperature of the air discharged by a warm air furnace. It has been found that the latter class of devices are open to the serious objection that they not infrequently permit considerable waste of fuel due to the fact that they permit the draft to be opened too long while waiting for steam to form or water or air to become heated.
In contrast to the deficiencies in heating device regulators as heretofore made, I provide means which will automatically retard the flow of the heated gasesthrough the stack or flue pipe so that a substantial portion of the hot gases of "combustionin the boiler or furnace will be reture of the hot gases in the stackhas cooled,
means are provided for automatically openingthe air draft to,.al1ow the fire to pick up again. Thus, it is apparent that by reason of my invention, a nearly constant stack temperature can be maintained while waiting for the operation of the air or draft regulator associated with the 5 heating device, to'close the draft and check the fire.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent, from the following description when taken in conjunction with the ac- 1o companying claims and drawings.

Referring to the drawings, 9 indicates generally my improved regulator which is arranged to be associated with a flue pipe or stack l0 through which the heated gases from a heating device are discharged. In order to conveniently and effectively connect the regulator 9 to the pipe Ill, the latter is preferablyprovided with an elongated opening Il (Figure 2) in its side, to which may be connected a rectangular supporting frame I! .by the bolts I3. A damper plate ll positioned within the pipe l0, may be pivotally connected at one end to the frame I2 by a shaft H which in turn is non-rotatably secured to the plate ll; One end of the shaft l5 extends be yond'theside of. the frame I! and the pipe In as at l6. Within the pipe or stack I0 is a thermostat, preferably in the form of a spirally wound bi-metal unit H, the inner or central end of which has the horizontal portion l8 connected to the lower end of a curved arm or bracket i9 by a bolt 20 and a nut 2i (Figure 3). The opposite end of the arm i9 is secured to the inner wall of the flange I2 by the bolt 22 and nut 23.
, The outer end of the thermostat i1 terminates in a straight portion 24 which preferably is swivelly connected to a rod 25 as at 28. The outer or upper end of the rod-25 is secured to the plate I4 in any suitable manner such as by the rivet 28. The damper plate l4 normally assumes the position shown in dotted lines in Figure 2 and is moved to its full line position upon the expansion of the thermostat in response to increase in temperature of the flue gases. It will be observed that the thermostat I1 is positioned in the pipe so that the damper plate I4 acts as a shield to prevent direct contact of the air passing through the opening I l with the thermostat. While the frame i2 isshown as a separate element, it is manifest that the same may be made as an integral part of the pipe when the opening I i is being formed therein.
The convolutions of the spiral thermostat H degrees as clearly shown in Figure 3 so as to insure all parts of the thermostat being uniformly and directly exposed to or in the path of the heated gases passing through the flue pipe Hi. The rod 25 preferably is inclined so as not to extend perpendicularly from the damper plate 14 and thus is connected to the thermostat to facilitate the movement of the plate l4 in response to the actuation of the thermostat. A stop in the form of a lug 21 beneath the shaft l acts to limit the downward movement of the plate l4 and prevents the latter from swinging through an arc of more than ninety degrees.
The extended portion I8 of the shaft has a member in the form of a wheel or pulley 28 nonrotatably secured thereto in any suitable manner, such as by the set screw 28 which extends through the hub 38 of the wheel to engage with the adjacent portion of the shaft l8 (Figure 3). The wheel 28 is preferably provided in its outer periphery with a groove 3| having a series of circumferentially disposed spaced openings 32.
The sides of the wheel 28 may also be provided with a series of openings or perforations 33 for adjustably receiving a tensioned or weighted member which will be subsequently described.
- The regulator 9 is arranged to be associated with various types of heating devices for retarding the flow of heated gases passing through the flue pipe or stack and is automatically operable in accordance with the variations in temperature of the flue gases, to either control the air introduced into the heating device when associated with warm air furnaces and steam boilers or for retaining and conserving the heat in oil burners so as to utilize the heat to its maximum degree. In Figure 6 the flue pipe or stack "I having my automatic regulator 8 associated therewith, is
shown connected to a warm air furnace 34 and a chimney 35. A tensioning member 38 in the form of a flexible chain 31 having an intermediate spring connection 38 may be adjustably connected at its lower end to the wheel 28 by the l hook 39 arranged to engage in one of the side openings 33. The opposite end of the chain 38 is provided with a hook 48 adjustably connected to a plate 4| through the vertical openings 42 formed in the plate. The plate 4| may be conveniently positioned in the cellar or in a room above the cellar so as to adjust the tension exerted by the spring 38 on the member 28. A flexible member, such as a chain or the like 43, is
connected at one end through a hook 44 to 5 one of the peripheral openings 32 in the member 28 and extends over the spaced guide pulleys 45 so as to be connected at its opposite end as at 48, to the ash pit damper 41.
The chain 38 is connected to the member 28 so 1 as normally to create a suflicient tension through the spring 38 to maintain the damper plate l4 in position against the flange 48 of the frame l2 (Figure 2) so as to close the opening Ii. It will be seen that by varying the connection of the chain 38 with the member 28, the movement of the damper plate l4 awayfrom the opening ll may be controlled so asto cause the damper to move either slowly or rapidly as required by the particular heating installation. Moreover, by reason of the adjustable connection of the upper end of the chain 38 with the plate l4, the pressure exerted on the member 28 to maintain the damper plate l4 in its closed position, may be conveniently adjusted from the cellar or a room above the same so that this tension may be varied as temperature conditions in the house or building may require.
Assuming that the parts are in the position as shown in Figure 6 with the damper plate l4 closing the opening II, and the damper 48 opened to allow the'introduction of air into the furnace 34, it will be apparent that when the heat of the gases passing through the flue pipe in exceeds the temperature to which the thermostat is set, the thermostat is expanded, which in turn causes the damper plate l4 to be moved downwardly and inwardly into the path of the heated gases by reason of its connection through the rod 25 to the outer end 24 of the thermostat (Fig. 2), thus retarding the flow of the heated, gases. Simultaneously with the downward movement of the damper plate l4, the member 28 is rotated in a clockwise direction so as to close the damper 48. Conversely, when the temperature of the heated gases in the flue pipe l8 cools or falls below the predetermined temperature, the thermostat will contract, causing the damper plate to be moved to close the opening I i and the flexible member 43 will be actuated to open the air no;
controlled damper 48. In other words, by reason of my improved regulator and combined automatic stack limit, a draft control isprovided which, when the desired stack temperature is attained, will close the ash pit damper 48 to reduce 85- I thermostat 8| responsive to variations in temperature of the boiler 48 may be operatively connected with the lever arm 52 pivoted at 53 to a bracket 54 mountedon the boiler 48. To one end of the arm 82 is adjustably secured a weight while the opposite end of this arm is connected to a rod. The lower end of the rod 58 extends loosely through an opening in the damper plate 5'! so as to permit the independent movement of the damper plate relative to the rod 58. In certain cities, there are ordinances goveming the installation of oil burners which require thefluedamperto beoi'ahingedtypesoasto open outwardly to relieve pressure caused by pufls or backfire due to delayed ignition. In Figure 9, there is shown a modifled form of the regulator disclosed in Figure 8 and which isarranged to be associated with oil burners to comply with these regulations. In Figure 9, the flue pipe 13, has positioned therein, a coiled thermostat 14 so as to be directly in the path of the flue gases. The inner or central end of the thermostat is connected as at I to a bracket 16 secured to the flange ll of the frame I8 by the bolt I! and the nut ll. The opposite end 8| of the thermostat is swivelly connected as at 82 to a rod or bar 83 which extends through an opening in the damper plate N and is provided with spaced adjustable collars or stops 85 and 86 between which the damper plate is freely movable. The plate 84 is pivotally connected at one end as at 81 to the frame It and has its opposite end arranged, when in its closed position, to engage the ridge I8 which limits its downward movement. Normally, the plate 84 and its associated parts are in the full line position as shown in Figure 9. Upon increase in the temperature of the flue gases, the
arm 4| to be moved upwardly, which in turn raises the damper plate 84 so that this plate assumes the position as shown in dotted lines. The plate 84 is i'reely'movable between the stops 85 and II so that when it is in its closed position, itmay be instantly opened by sudden or exces sive pressure caused by puffs or backfire in the j flue pipe. to permit the escape oi thse gases and thus relieve the thermostat II from being subiected to such a severe strain. Whenthe plate M is moved to its raised or opened position; the
cold air admitted to the pipe does not affect the operation of the thermostat due to the fact that it is not in'the direct path of the cold air current, The cold air passing into the pipe naturally follows the course of least resistance which is toward thechimney,duetothenatura1draftfromthe chimney. Consequently, the thermostat is not cooled by the external air but is direetly.respon- 'sivetothe temperatureoithefluegasesiromthe heating device;
The side openings in each of the wheels 28, I and -'II are arranged to adjustablzreceive a tensioning or weighting member so that the latter may be connectedto the wheel on its side to yieldably maintain the damper plate in its closed position and control its rapidity of movement away from its opening. However, it is manifest that the positioning of the tensioned or weighted member may be adjustedsoastovary thepressureexertedbythismember on the damper plate as the particular heat installation may require.
It willbethatmyregulatorcanbe conveniently'connected to flue pipes of various types of heating devices without necessitating the 16 dismantling of the pipes and can beconvenientlv thermostat ll will be actuated to cause its outer of the appended claims.

In combination with a flue pipe having a side open s or a regulator including a damper plate positioned within the pipe and arranged to close said opening, means pivotally connecting 3 one end 01' the plate to the pipe to permit the 20 plate to be moved into the path of the heated gases passing through the pipe, and a coiled thermostat connected at one end to the pipe and connected at its opposite end-to the plate for actuating the latter in accordance with variations in temperature 01 the flue gases, said thermostat being positioned in the path of the flue I gases so that when the heat of the gases in the pipe exceeds a predetermined temperature, the thermostat automatically actuates the plate to 3.0 move the latter to retard the flow of the heated gases passing through the pipe and moves the plate out or the path of the gases upon the lowering of the temperature in the pipe.

In combination with a flue pipe having a side opening. of a regulator including a damper plate positioned within the flue pipe and arranged to close said opening, means pivotallyconnecting one end of the plate to the pipe to automatically actuating the plate to move the latter to retard the flow oi the heated gases passing through the pipe and for moving the plate out of the path'oi the gases upon the lowering of the temperature in the pipe, and means for normally maintaining the damper plate out of the path of the flue gases.

portion thereof operatively connected to said plate for actuating the latter to control said opening in accordance with variations in temperature of the flue gases, and means for permitting the independent'movement of the plate relative to the thermostat.

In combination with a heating device having a flue pipe provided with a side opening, of a regulator including a movable plate arranged to control said opening, a coiled thermostat supported within the pipe between the heating device and said opening, a member extending through an opening in said p'ate and provided with spaced stops between which the plate is independently movable, and means connecting an arm of the thermostat to said member for actuating the plate in accordance with variations in temperature of the flue gases.
22. In combination with a heating device having a flue piperprovided with a side opening, of
a regulator including a pivotally mounted plate arranged to control said'opening and movable outwardly relatively thereto, a coil thermostat supported within the pipe between the heating. device and said opening, a member extending through an opening in said plate and provided 5 with spaced stops between which the plate is independently movable, and means connecting the outer arm of the thermostat to said member for actuating the plate in accordance with variations in temperature of the flue gases.
23. As an improved article of manufacture, a regulator arranged to be mounted .on a flue pipe, said regulator including a frame member having an opening, a plate pivotally connected to the frame member for controlling said opening, a 15 coiled thermostat suspended from the frame member and arranged to be positioned between a heating device and said opening, and means fixedly connecting the inner end of thethermostat to said frame member, said thermostat hav- 2o ing its outer convolution arranged to be operatively associated with the plate. for actuating thelatter to control said opening in accordance with variations in temperature of the flue gases.
24. As an improved article of manufacture, a 25 regulator arranged to be mounted on a flue, pipe, said regulator including, a frame member having an opening, a plate pivotally connected to the frame member for controlling said opening, and
movable outwardly relative thereto, a coiled ther- 30- mostat suspended from the frame member and arranged to be positioned between a heating device and said opening, means fixedly connecting the inner end of the thermostat to said frame member, said thermostat having its 'outer con- 35 volution arranged .to be operatively associated with the plate for actuating the latter to control said opening in accordance with variations in temperature 01 he flue gases, and means for permitting independent movement of the plate rela- 40 tive to the thermostat.
