Definitions
- the invention relates to a wavelength conversion element, and more particularly to a wavelength conversion element suitable for a projection apparatus, and a projection apparatus having the wavelength conversion element.
- a phosphor wheel of a known projection apparatus includes elements such as a phosphor layer, a substrate, and a metal ring.
- the metal ring is attached to the plane of the substrate in a plane, thereby increasing the structural strength of the substrate.
- the phosphor layer is attached to the substrate and surrounds the metal ring. The phosphor layer is excited by the excitation beam to generate the color beam required to form the projected image.
- the metal ring is used to increase the structural strength of the substrate, the substrate still has the problem of insufficient structural strength, which causes the surface of the substrate to be uneven. Due to the poor flatness of the substrate, the excitation beam cannot always be accurately focused on the phosphor layer when the phosphor color wheel rotates, resulting in a variation in excitation efficiency. Thus, the brightness of the above-mentioned color beam may be unstable, thereby affecting the image quality of the projection apparatus.

Abstract
Description
- This application claims the priority benefit of CN202011370151.8, filed on Nov. 30, 2020. The entirety of the above-mentioned patent application is hereby incorporated by reference herein and made a part of this specification.
Generally, the metal ring is attached to the plane of the substrate in a plane, thereby increasing the structural strength of the substrate. The phosphor layer is attached to the substrate and surrounds the metal ring. The phosphor layer is excited by the excitation beam to generate the color beam required to form the projected image.
- In the known art, although the metal ring is used to increase the structural strength of the substrate, the substrate still has the problem of insufficient structural strength, which causes the surface of the substrate to be uneven.
- The information disclosed in this “BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION” section is only for enhancement understanding of the background of the invention and therefore it may contain information that does not form the prior art that is already known to a person of ordinary skill in the art. Furthermore, the information disclosed in this “BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION” section does not mean that one or more problems to be solved by one or more embodiments of the invention were acknowledged by a person of ordinary skill in the art.
- The invention provides a wavelength conversion element to solve the problem of unstable excitation efficiency in prior art.
- The invention provides a projection apparatus having the advantage of good image quality.
- Other advantages and objects of the invention may be further illustrated by the technical features broadly embodied and described as follows.
- In order to achieve one or a portion of or all of the objects or other objects, a wavelength conversion element provided by the invention includes a substrate, a reinforcement plate, an adhesive layer, and a wavelength conversion layer. The substrate has a first engaging portion. The reinforcement plate is connected to the substrate and has a second engaging portion. The second engaging portion is correspondingly jointed with the first engaging portion. The adhesive layer is connected between the substrate and the reinforcement plate and is disposed between the first engaging portion and the second engaging portion. The wavelength conversion layer is disposed on the substrate.
- In order to achieve one or a portion of or all of the objects or other objects, a projection apparatus provided by the invention includes an illumination system, a light valve, and a projection lens. The illumination system is configured to provide an illumination beam. The light valve is disposed on a transmissive path of the illumination beam to convert the illumination beam into an image beam. The projection lens is disposed on a transmissive path of the image beam. The illumination system includes an excitation beam source and the aforementioned wavelength conversion element. The excitation beam source is configured to provide an excitation beam. The wavelength conversion element is disposed on a transmissive path of the excitation beam.
- The wavelength conversion element of the invention adopts the substrate having the first engaging portion and the reinforcement plate having the second engaging portion. Compared with the structure in which the metal ring and the substrate are attached in a plane manner in the known art, because the first engaging portion and the second engaging portion are concave-convex engaging structure, the substrate of the invention can not only maintain a good deformation resistance in the axial direction, but also improve the ability to resist deformation in the radial direction, thereby enhancing the structural strength of the substrate. Since the substrate has good structural strength, the surface of the substrate has better flatness, so that the excitation beam can be accurately focused on the wavelength conversion layer to maintain stable excitation efficiency. In addition, since the projection apparatus of the invention adopts the above-mentioned wavelength conversion element, the projection apparatus has the advantage of good image quality.

FIG. 1A is a schematic top view of a wavelength conversion element in accordance with an embodiment of the invention.FIG. 1B is a schematic cross-sectional view of the wavelength conversion element, taken along the line I-I inFIG. 1A .FIG. 1C is a schematic exploded diagram of the wavelength conversion element ofFIG. 1B . Referring toFIGS. 1A to 1C , thewavelength conversion element 100 includes asubstrate 110, areinforcement plate 120, anadhesive layer 130 and awavelength conversion layer 140. Thesubstrate 110 has a firstengaging portion 111. Thereinforcement plate 120 is connected to thesubstrate 110 and has a secondengaging portion 121. The secondengaging portion 121 is correspondingly jointed with the first engagingportion 111; that is, the first engagingportion 111 and the secondengaging portion 121 are aligned with each other, but are not in direct contact. Theadhesive layer 130 is connected between thesubstrate 110 and thereinforcement plate 120, and is disposed between the first engagingportion 111 and the secondengaging portion 121. In other words, in this embodiment, the first engagingportion 111 and the secondengaging portion 121 are fixed with each other by theadhesive layer 130. In addition, thewavelength conversion layer 140 is disposed on thesubstrate 110. - The first
engaging portion 111 mentioned is, for example, disposed on asurface 113 of thesubstrate 110, and the secondengaging portion 121 is, for example, disposed on asurface 122 of thereinforcement plate 130. Theadhesive layer 130 may not be limited to be disposed between the first engagingportion 111 and the secondengaging portion 121 only. For example, theadhesive layer 130 may also extend toward the center of thesubstrate 110 and thereinforcement plate 120 from that between the first engagingportion 111 and the secondengaging portion 121, so that thesubstrate 110 can be firmly connected to thereinforcement plate 120. The material of theadhesive layer 130 includes, for example, organic glue and/or inorganic glue. The organic glue may include silicone and epoxy, and the inorganic glue may include glass cement. The material of theadhesive layer 130 of this embodiment is not limited to the above, and other materials can be selected according to different design ways. - The
wavelength conversion layer 140 is, for example, disposed on asurface 114 of thesubstrate 110. Thewavelength conversion layer 140 may include a wavelength conversion material. The wavelength conversion material is, for example, fluorescent material, phosphorescent material (e.g., phosphor), or quantum dot (e.g., nanomaterial). Thewavelength conversion layer 140 can emit beam with at least one wavelength after being irradiated by an excitation beam. For instance, thewavelength conversion layer 140 shown inFIG. 1A includes two wavelength conversion blocks 141, 142 having different wavelength conversion materials. Specifically, the wavelength conversion blocks 141, 142 are, for example, provided with a green wavelength conversion material and a yellow wavelength conversion material, so as to emit a green beam and a yellow beam after being irradiated by the excitation beam, respectively. Similarly, in one embodiment, thewavelength conversion layer 140 may include three wavelength conversion blocks (not show) having different wavelength conversion materials, and the three wavelength conversion blocks are, for example, provided with a green wavelength conversion material, a yellow wavelength conversion material, and a red wavelength conversion material respectively. The green wavelength conversion material, the yellow wavelength conversion material, and the red wavelength conversion material can emit a green beam, a yellow beam, and a red beam respectively after being irradiated by the excitation beam. In addition, in another embodiment, the number of the wavelength conversion blocks of thewavelength conversion layer 140 may be one. For example, thewavelength conversion layer 140 is provided with a yellow wavelength conversion material, so as to emit a yellow beam after being irradiated by the excitation beam. - The
substrate 110 may be made of a material with high temperature resistance and better thermal conductivity. For instance, the material of thesubstrate 110 may be a metal having better thermal conductivity, such as aluminum, copper, silver, or an alloy thereof, but the material of thesubstrate 110 is not limited to the above-mentioned materials and metals. - Please refer to
FIGS. 1B and 1C again. The rigidity of thereinforcement plate 120 is, for example, greater than the rigidity of thesubstrate 110, so as to enhance the overall structural strength of thewavelength conversion element 100. The rigidity of thereinforcement plate 120 being greater than the rigidity of thesubstrate 110 can be achieved by selecting different thicknesses or/and materials of thesubstrate 110 and thereinforcement plate 120. Specifically, thereinforcement plate 120 and thesubstrate 110 can be made of the same material, and the thickness of thereinforcement plate 120 can be greater than that of thesubstrate 110. For example, the materials of thereinforcement plate 120 and thesubstrate 110 both are aluminum alloy, the thickness of thereinforcement plate 120 may be between 1 mm to 10 mm, and the thickness of thesubstrate 110 may be less than 1 mm. In another embodiment, thereinforcement plate 120 and thesubstrate 110 can have similar thicknesses, and the rigidity of the material of thereinforcement plate 120 is greater than the rigidity of the material of thesubstrate 110. For example, the material of thesubstrate 110 is aluminum alloy, and the material of thereinforcement plate 120 is stainless steel which is more rigid than aluminum alloy. In this way, the rigidity of the reinforcingplate 120 can still be greater than the rigidity of thesubstrate 110 when the thicknesses of the reinforcingplate 120 and thesubstrate 110 are similar to each other. It is worth mentioning that the reinforcingplate 120 can be made of materials with better thermal conductivity, such as the aforementioned aluminum alloy or stainless steel, so that the reinforcingplate 120 can also enhance the thermal conductivity of thesubstrate 110, in addition to improving the structural strength of thesubstrate 110. - In this embodiment, the second
engaging portion 121 of thereinforcement plate 120 may include aprotrusion structure 1210 protruding from thesurface 122 of thereinforcement plate 120, and the first engagingportion 111 of thesubstrate 110 may include arecess 1110 having a shape corresponding to theprotrusion structure 1210. Therecess 1110 is, for example, made by punching thesubstrate 110 from thesurface 113, so aprotrusion structure 115 is formed on thesurface 114 of thesubstrate 110 corresponding to therecess 1110, but the invention does not limit the forming method of therecess 1110. In addition, the first engagingportion 111 extends along an annular track, for example, so theprotrusion structure 115 inFIG. 1A extends the aforementioned annular track, and the secondengaging portion 121 inFIG. 1B extends corresponding to the track of the first engagingportion 111. In other embodiments, the first engagingportion 111 may extend along a square track, a triangular track, a circular track, an elliptical track, or other tracks. The embodiment does not limit the extension track of the first engagingportion 111 and the secondengaging portion 121. - Please refer to
FIG. 1C again. Theprotrusion structure 1210 of thereinforcement plate 120 may have a top wall W1 opposite to thesurface 122 and a side wall W2 connected between thesurface 122 and the top wall W1. Therecess 1110 of thesubstrate 110 may have a side face S1 opposite to the side wall W2 and a bottom face S2 opposite to the top wall W1. In this embodiment, theadhesive layer 130 is, for example, disposed between the side wall W2 and the side face S1 and between the top wall W1 and the bottom face S2, so that the first engagingportion 111 and the secondengaging portion 121 can be tightly jointed. - In the
wavelength conversion element 100 of this embodiment, because the first engagingportion 111 and the secondengaging portion 121 are concave-convex engaging structures, the deformation resistance of thesubstrate 110 in the axial direction D1 and the radial direction D2 can be improved, so as to enhance the structural strength of thesubstrate 110. Because thesubstrate 110 has good structural strength, the surface of thesubstrate 110 has a better flatness, so that the excitation beam can be accurately focused on thewavelength conversion layer 140 to maintain stable excitation efficiency. - Please refer to
FIG. 1A again. Thesubstrate 110 of the embodiment may further have anoptical zone 112. Theoptical zone 112 is, for example, an opening of thesubstrate 110, and may be located between the two adjacent wavelength conversion blocks 141, 142. Thewavelength conversion element 100 may further include aplate body 150 disposed in theoptical zone 112 of thesubstrate 110. Theplate body 150 may have a shape corresponding to theoptical zone 112 and be arranged in theoptical zone 112. Theplate body 150 may be a beam-transmitting plate, such as a glass substrate, for allowing the excitation beam to pass therethrough. A beam diffusion layer or a beam diffusion microstructure may be arranged on the beam-transmitting plate to eliminate speckles formed by the excitation beam. In one embodiment, theplate body 150 is, for example, an anti-reflection glass (AR glass). It is worth to mention that, because theoptical zone 112 itself is an opening structure, theoptical zone 112 can be used as a beam-transmitting zone for allowing the excitation beam to directly pass therethrough without being provided with theplate body 150 or other optical elements. In addition, theoptical zone 112 can be changed to a reflection zone for reflecting the excitation beam according to different design requirements. In this case, theplate body 150 may be a reflective plate, and theoptical zone 112 may not be arranged as an opening. Alternatively, theplate body 150 and the opening mentioned above may not be arranged on thesubstrate 110. - Please refer to
FIGS. 1B and 1C again. Thewavelength conversion element 100 may be a phosphor wheel. Specifically, thewavelength conversion element 100 may further include a motor M. The motor M has a shaft S. Please also refer toFIG. 1A . Thesubstrate 110 and thereinforcement plate 120 may be ring-shaped and sleeved on the shaft S. In this embodiment, thereinforcement plate 120 may be fixed on the motor M, and thesubstrate 110 is fixed on thereinforcement plate 120. In this way, the motor M can drive thesubstrate 110 to rotate. - Please continue to refer to
FIG. 1B . Thewavelength conversion layer 140 and thereinforcement plate 120 may be disposed on opposite sides of thesubstrate 110, so that the size of thereinforcement plate 120 is not limited to the position of thewavelength conversion layer 140. As described above, because thereinforcement plate 120 and thesubstrate 110 of the embodiment may be ring-shaped, thesubstrate 110 may have an outer diameter R1 and thereinforcement plate 120 may have an outer diameter R2. In this embodiment, the outer diameter R2 of thereinforcement plate 120 is, for example, smaller than the outer diameter R1 of thesubstrate 110, but is not limited thereto. For example, please refer toFIG. 2 , which is a schematic diagram of awavelength conversion element 100 a in accordance with another embodiment of the invention. As shown inFIG. 2 , the outer diameter R3 of thereinforcement plate 120 a is equal to the outer diameter R1 of thesubstrate 110. Theadhesive layer 130 a may be disposed between thesubstrate 110 and thereinforcement plate 120 a. Please refer toFIG. 3 , which is a schematic diagram of awavelength conversion element 100 b in accordance with another embodiment of the invention. As shown inFIG. 3 , the outer diameter R4 of thereinforcement plate 120 b is larger than the outer diameter R1 of thesubstrate 110. Theadhesive layer 130 b may also be disposed between thesubstrate 110 and thereinforcement 120 b. Because the embodiments ofFIGS. 2 and 3 both increase the outer diameter R3 of thereinforcement plate 120 a and the outer diameter R4 of thereinforcement plate 120 b, the areas where thereinforcement plates substrate 110 are fixed to each other are increased, so that the structural strength of thesubstrate 110 can be further improved. -
FIG. 4 is a schematic diagram of a wavelength conversion element in accordance with another embodiment of the invention. The structure and advantages of thewavelength conversion element 100 c of this embodiment are similar to those of thewavelength conversion element 100, and only the differences are described below. Please refer toFIG. 4 . Thereinforcement plate 120 c of this embodiment has thesurface 122 c facing thesubstrate 110 c, and the secondengaging portion 121 c includes the protrudingstructure 1210 c protruding from thesurface 122 c. The firstengaging portion 111 c includes a throughhole 1110 c having a shape corresponding to theprotrusion structure 1210 c. In detail, theprotrusion structure 1210 c extends into the throughhole 1110 c, for example, but does not protrude from thesubstrate 110 c through the throughhole 1110 c. For example, a top wall W3 of theprotrusion structure 1210 c of this embodiment may be co-planar with thesubstrate 110 c, but the top wall W3 of theprotrusion structure 1210 c may be located in the throughhole 1110 c in the other embodiments. In this embodiment, theprotrusion structure 1210 c may have a side wall W4 connected to thesurface 122 c. The throughhole 1110 c may have a hole wall W5 opposite to the side wall W4. Theadhesive layer 130 c is disposed between the side wall W4 and the hole wall W5. In this way, the side wall W4 and the hole wall W5 can be connected with each other by theadhesive layer 130 c. In addition, theadhesive layer 130 c may extend toward the center of thesubstrate 110 c and thereinforcement plate 120 c from that between the side wall W4 and the hole wall W5, so as to further improve the firmness of the connection of thesubstrate 110 c to the reinforcingplate 120 c. -
FIG. 5 is a schematic diagram of a wavelength conversion element in accordance with another embodiment of the invention. The structure and advantages of thewavelength conversion element 100 d of this embodiment are similar to those of the previous embodiment, and only the differences are described below. Please refer toFIG. 5 . In this embodiment, an end of theprotrusion structure 1210 d may protrude from thesubstrate 110 d through the throughhole 1110 d. In addition, theadhesive layer 130 d is at least disposed between the throughhole 1110 d and theprotrusion structure 1210 d, and thesurface 122 d of thereinforcement plate 120 d is connected to thesubstrate 110 d. Similar to other embodiments, theadhesive layer 130 d in this embodiment may extend toward the center of thesubstrate 110 d and thereinforcement plate 120 d from that between the throughhole 1110 d and theprotrusion structure 1210 d, so as to further improve the firmness of the connection of thesubstrate 110 d to thereinforcement plate 120 d. - In each of the previous embodiments, the
reinforcement plate wavelength conversion layer 140 are located on the opposite sides of thesubstrate FIGS. 6 to 8 are schematic diagrams of wavelength conversion elements in accordance with another three embodiments of the invention. The structure and advantages of thewavelength conversion element 100 e shown inFIG. 6 are similar to those of thewavelength conversion element 100 ofFIG. 1 , and the major difference is that thewavelength conversion layer 140 and thereinforcement plate 120 are located on the same side of thesubstrate 100 inFIG. 6 . Similar to the embodiment ofFIG. 1 , thereinforcement plate 120 of this embodiment has thesurface 122 facing thesubstrate 110, and the protrusion structure 1210 (i.e., the second engaging portion 121) protrudes from thesurface 122, for example. The recess 1110 (i.e., the first engaging portion 111) is formed on thesurface 113 of thesubstrate 110 facing thereinforcement plate 120. Different from the embodiment ofFIG. 1 , thewavelength conversion layer 140 of this embodiment is located on thesurface 113, and is on the same side of thesubstrate 110 with thereinforcement plate 120 after theprotrusion structure 1210 and therecess 1110 are jointed with each other. The same as the previous embodiments, theadhesive layer 130 of this embodiment may be disposed between theprotrusion structure 1210 and therecess 1110, and may also extend toward the center of thesubstrate 110 and thereinforcement plate 120 from that between theprotrusion structure 1210 and therecess 1110. The structure and advantages of thewavelength conversion element 100 f ofFIG. 7 are similar to those of thewavelength conversion element 100 c ofFIG. 4 , and the major difference is that thewavelength conversion layer 140 and thereinforcement plate 120 c are located on the same side of thesubstrate 100 c inFIG. 7 . Similar to the embodiment ofFIG. 4 , theprotrusion structure 1210 c (i.e., the secondengaging portion 121 c) of this embodiment may protrude from thesurface 122 c of thereinforcement plate 120 c facing thesubstrate 110 c. The throughhole 1110 c of thesubstrate 110 c (i.e., the first engagingportion 111 c) is disposed corresponding to theprotrusion structure 1210 c. Different from the embodiment ofFIG. 4 , thewavelength conversion layer 140 of this embodiment is located on thesurface 113 c of thesubstrate 110 c facing thereinforcement plate 120 c, and is on the same side of thesubstrate 110 c with thereinforcement plate 120 c after theprotrusion structure 1210 c and the throughhole 1110 c are jointed with each other. In addition, theadhesive layer 130 c of this embodiment may be disposed between theprotrusion structure 1210 c and the throughhole 1110 c, and may also further extend toward the center of thesubstrate 110 c and thereinforcement plate 120 c. The structure and advantages of thewavelength conversion element 100 g ofFIG. 8 are similar to those of thewavelength conversion element 100 d ofFIG. 5 , and the major difference is that thewavelength conversion layer 140 and thereinforcement plate 120 d ofFIG. 8 are located on the same side of thesubstrate 110 d. Similarly, theprotrusion structure 1210 d (i.e., the secondengaging portion 121 d) of this embodiment protrudes from thesurface 122 d of thereinforcement plate 120 d facing thesubstrate 110 d, and the throughhole 1110 d (i.e., the first engagingportion 111 d) is disposed corresponding to theprotrusion structure 1210 d. Different from the embodiment ofFIG. 5 , thewavelength conversion layer 140 of this embodiment is located on thesurface 113 d of thesubstrate 110 d facing thereinforcement plate 120 d, and is on the same side of thesubstrate 110 d with thereinforcement plate 120 d after theprotrusion structure 1210 d and the throughhole 1110 d are jointed with each other. In addition, theadhesive layer 130 d of this embodiment may be disposed between theprotrusion structure 1210 d and the throughhole 1110 d, and may also further extend toward the center of thesubstrate 110 d and thereinforcement plate 120 d. In some embodiments, since thewavelength conversion layer 140 is on the same side of the substrate with the reinforcement plate, the outer diameter of the reinforcement plate may preferably be configured to be smaller than the outer diameter of the substrate. Hence, the transmission path of the excitation beam for irradiating thewavelength conversion layer 140 may not be blocked by the reinforcement plate. -
FIG. 9 is a block diagram of a projection apparatus in accordance with an embodiment of the invention. Please refer toFIG. 9 . Theprojection apparatus 200 includes anillumination system 210, alight valve 220 and aprojection lens 230. Theillumination system 210 is configured to provide an illumination beam L1. Thelight valve 220 is disposed on a transmission path of the illumination beam L1 to convert the illumination beam L1 into an image beam L2. Theprojection lens 230 is disposed on a transmission path of the image beam L2. Theillumination system 210 includes anexcitation beam source 211 and the aforementionedwavelength conversion element 100. Theexcitation beam source 211 is configured to provide an excitation beam Le. Thewavelength conversion element 100 is disposed on a transmission path of the excitation beam Le. - The
illumination system 210 includes theexcitation beam source 211 and thewavelength conversion element 100. Theexcitation beam source 211 can include, for example, a beam emitting diode (LED) or a laser diode (LD), and the number of the beam emitting diodes or laser diodes may be one or more. For example, the beam emitting diodes (or laser diodes) can be arranged in a matrix when the number of the beam emitting diodes (or laser diodes) is more than one. Thewavelength conversion element 100 is disposed on a transmission path of the excitation beam Le. Thewavelength conversion element 100 rotates in time sequences to convert the excitation beam Le into a conversion beam Lp. The part of the excitation beam Le not being converted into the conversion beam Lp by thewavelength conversion element 100 is denoted as the beam Lr inFIG. 9 . The aforementioned illumination beam L1 includes the beam Lr and the conversion beam Lp. Because the features of thewavelength conversion element 100 have been described in detail in the foregoing, no redundant detail is to be given herein. - The
light valve 220 is, for example, a digital micro-mirror device (DMD), a liquid crystal on silicon panel (LCoS panel) or a liquid crystal display (LCD), but the invention is not limited thereto. In addition, this embodiment does not limit the number of thelight valves 200. For example, theprojection apparatus 200 of this embodiment may adopt a structure of single-chip liquid crystal display panel or three-chip liquid crystal display panel, but the invention is not limited thereto. - The
projection lens 230 includes, for example, one or more optical lenses, and the diopters of the optical lenses can be the same or different to each other. For example, the optical lenses may include various of non-planar lens, such as a biconcave lens, a biconvex lens, a concavo-convex lens, a convexo-concave lens, a plano-convex lens, and a plano-concave lens, or any combination of the non-planar lens mentioned above. On the other hand, theprojection lens 230 may also include a planer optical lens. The invention does not limit the specific structure of theprojection lens 230. - In comparison with the background art, the
projection apparatus 200 of this embodiment uses the aforementionedwavelength conversion element 100. Because thesubstrate 110 of thewavelength conversion element 100 has good structural strength and therefore the surface of thesubstrate 110 has a better flatness, the excitation beam Le can be accurately focused on thewavelength conversion layer 140 to maintain stable excitation efficiency. Therefore, theprojection apparatus 200 has the advantage of good image quality. In addition, thewavelength conversion element 100 in theprojection apparatus 200 of this embodiment can be replaced with any of the above-mentionedwavelength conversion elements - In summary, the wavelength conversion element of the invention adopts the substrate having the first engaging portion and the reinforcement plate having the second engaging portion.
