The principal object of the present invention is to display the titles, names or inscriptions upon the tabs of index cards in such a way that the same can be clearly seen and read when the & cards are arranged in drawers or trays, disposed one above another in stacks; no matter which of the trays or drawers is viewed, even the trays or drawers at the bottom of the stack or pile.

Other objects of the invention will appear from the following description at the end of which the invention will be claimed.

Generally stated the invention consists in a tab bearing an inscription, title or name and integral with an index card and disposed at an id inclination away from the face of the card, and

the surfaces of the tab and of the adjacent marginal portion of the card from which it projects, provided with a transparent coating of waterproof lacquer varnish or the like which holds the tab in such incl-'ned position and protects the faces of the tab and the adjacent edge portions of the card.

The invention also consists in the improvements to be presently described and finally claimed.

In the following descriptionreference will be made to the accompanyingdrawing, forming part hereof, and in which Figure 1 is'a back view of a card;

4, is a score at the back of the card and at the root of the tab, and when present it.is full 5 of varnish, lacquer or the like, and this serves to additionally hold the tab in inclined position and to reinforce the union of the card and tab.

Under the varnish, lacquer, or the like, a name, title or inscription appears on the face 10 of ,the tab and by reason of the described inclination of the tab, the name, title or inscription can be easily readeven when the index cards are associated with other cards and arranged in trays or drawers disposed near the floor.

It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which the present invention relates that modifications may bevmade in details of construction and arrangement and matters of mere form without departing from the spirit of the invention which is not limited to such matters or otherwise than the prior art and the appended claim may require.

An index card having at one edge an integral index tab disposed at an inclination to the plane of the card and away from the face thereof and provided on the back of the card a-nd at the root of the tab with a, score, said tab and the marginal portion of the card adjacent thereto hav--' ing a surface coat of transparent water resisting and strength imparting material filling the I score and holding the tab in such inclined position.
