Abstract
Description
- This application claims the benefit of priority under 35 U.S.C. § 120 as a continuation of U.S. patent application Ser. No. 16/129,338, filed Sep. 12, 2018, which claims the benefit of priority under 35 U.S.C. § 119 to U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 62/609,997, filed Dec. 22, 2017, each of which is incorporated by reference herein in its entirety.
- The technology disclosed herein is related to technologies to process inputs to electronic list systems. Particular examples relate to the use of user history to process list inputs.
- The technology described herein includes computer implemented methods, computer program products, and systems to process inputs to electronic list systems. In some examples, the electronic list system receives, from a user device, a user input. The electronic list system parses the received user input for at least one of {product genus, product subgenus, product name, brand name, price information, retailer name, and manufacturer name}. The electronic list system queries a history of user activity using the parsed input. The electronic list system receives at least one product description responsive to the query; and presents, via the user device, each received at least one product description to the user.
- In some examples, the history of user activity is one or more of a history of user purchases initiated through the electronic list system, a history of user purchases initiated through the shopping services other than the list system, and a history of user world wide web activity, e-mail activity, and scanned receipts.
- In some examples, in response to receiving user selection of a presented item, the electronic list orders the item for the user from a shopping service associated with the selected item. In some examples presenting includes presenting, via the user device, a plurality of matching items in a hierarchy organized by product name, with lower hierarchy levels comprising one or more of price information, retailer name, manufacturer name, size, and quantity.
- In some examples, presenting includes presenting, via the user device, each previously purchased item with an indication that the item was previously purchased.
- These and other aspects, objects, features, and advantages of the technology described herein will become apparent to those having ordinary skill in the art upon consideration of the following detailed description of illustrated examples.

FIG. 8 is a block diagram depicting a computing machine and a module, in accordance with certain examples. - Smart electronic lists can leverage shopping data to help users shop a list. However, inputs to lists, such as voice and text inputs, suffer from several problems. For example, inputs can be one or more of: sporadic, generalized, and often poorly focused. As another example, inputs can mix product description, product price, product source, and product brand information—in no certain order.
- The combination of sporadic, generalized, mixed, and often poorly-focused inputs to such lists (including from multiple users of a single list), the requirement for highly-specific product descriptions required as inputs by shopping services, and the unavailability of non-electronic methods to reconcile the differences between such inputs, creates unaddressed problems unique to electronic commerce.
- By using and relying on the methods and systems described herein, the technology disclosed herein can maintain, and in some examples shop, an accessible list that is organized and includes recommendations and other helpful features. As such, the technology may be employed to address problems unique to electronic lists in electronic commerce, such as the conflict described above.
- Turning now to the drawings, in which like numerals represent like (but not necessarily identical) elements throughout the figures, examples of the present technology are described in detail.

FIG. 1 is a block diagram depicting anexample operating environment 100 in accordance with certain examples of the technology disclosed herein. While each server, system, and device shown in the operating environment is represented by one instance of the server, system, or device, multiple instances of each can be used. Further, while certain aspects of operation of the present technology are presented in examples related toFIG. 1 to facilitate enablement of the claimed invention, additional features of the present technology, also facilitating enablement of the claimed invention, are disclosed elsewhere herein. - As depicted in
FIG. 1 , theexample operating environment 100 includescomputing devices devices communications network 99. In some examples, a user associated with a device must install an application and/or make a feature selection to obtain the benefits of the technology described herein. - Network 99 includes one or more wired or wireless telecommunications means by which network devices may exchange data. For example, the
network 99 may include one or more of a local area network (LAN), a wide area network (WAN), an intranet, an Internet, a storage area network (SAN), a personal area network (PAN), a metropolitan area network (MAN), a wireless local area network (WLAN), a virtual private network (VPN), a cellular or other mobile communication network, a BLUETOOTH® wireless technology connection, a near field communication (NFC) connection, any combination thereof, and any other appropriate architecture or system, that facilitates the RF communication of signals, data, and/or messages. Throughout the discussion of examples, it should be understood that the terms “data” and “information” are used interchangeably herein to refer to text, images, audio, video, or any other form of information that can exist in a computer-based environment. - Each
computing device network 99. For example, each network device can include a server, a desktop computer, a laptop computer, a tablet computer, a television with one or more processors embedded therein and/or coupled thereto, a smart phone, a handheld computer, a personal digital assistant (PDA), or any other wired or wireless processor-driven device. - In examples described herein,
computing device 110 is alist server 110 operative to practice examples of the technology disclosed herein. In some examples, thelist server 110 provides Create, Read, Update, and Delete (CRUD) functionality for lists, and products in a list, in conjunction with one or moremobile devices 120,computing devices 130 such as laptop computers, desktop computers, tablet computers, smart watches, and wearables, andhome devices 140 such as Google Home appliance. - The Create function can provide application programming interfaces (APIs) from the
list server 110 and graphic user interfaces (GUIs) in conjunction with web browsers (122, 132, 142) or native applications (124, 134, 144) on various devices (120, 130, 140) to the user to search across the catalog(s) visible to the list server 110 (such as internal catalogs and catalogs of shopping service 150), create lists, and shop the created lists (including shopping via shopping service 150). - The Read function can provide APIs and GUIs in a similar fashion to search for and display created lists and listed products. The Update and Delete functions provide user interfaces for editing and saving created lists and listed products. Other functionality of the technology provides APIs and GUIs for setting list administrative characteristics, and provides user interfaces for communicating and collaborating with other users.
- Each of
mobile device 120 andcomputing device 130 can receive text, touch, image, and voice inputs for CRUD, administrative, and communication functions through the corresponding browser or native application.Home device 140 primarily receives voice inputs and responds with audio outputs, though some examples of home device can interact with users via a GUI. In some examples, such inputs can be processed in conjunction with anassistant server 160 implementing a virtual personal assistant, such as Google Assistant, as part of the interface to thelist server 110. - The connections illustrated are examples, and other means of establishing a communications link between the computers and devices can be used. Moreover, those having ordinary skill in the art having the benefit of the present disclosure will appreciate that the computing devices illustrated in
FIG. 1 may have any of several other suitable computer system configurations. For example,computing device 130 may be embodied as wearable device and may not include all the components described above. - In examples, the computing devices, and any other computing machines associated with the technology presented herein, may be any type of computing machine such as, but not limited to, those discussed in more detail with respect to
FIG. 8 . Furthermore, any modules associated with any of these computing machines, such as modules described herein or any other modules (scripts, web content, software, firmware, or hardware) associated with the technology presented herein may be any of the modules discussed in more detail with respect toFIG. 8 . The computing machines discussed herein may communicate with one another as well as other computer machines or communication systems over one or more networks, such asnetwork 99. Thenetwork 99 may include any type of data or communications network, including any of the network technology discussed with respect toFIG. 8 . - The example methods illustrated in the figures are described hereinafter with respect to the components of the
example operating environment 100. The example methods also can be performed with other systems and in other environments. The operations described with respect to any of the figures can be implemented as executable code stored on a computer or machine readable non-transitory tangible storage medium (e.g., floppy disk, hard disk, ROM, EEPROM, nonvolatile RAM, CD-ROM, etc.) that are completed based on execution of the code by a processor circuit implemented using one or more integrated circuits; the operations described herein also can be implemented as executable logic that is encoded in one or more non-transitory tangible media for execution (e.g., programmable logic arrays or devices, field programmable gate arrays, programmable array logic, application specific integrated circuits, etc.). - Referring to
FIG. 2 , and continuing to refer toFIG. 1 for context,methods 200 to process inputs to electronic list systems are illustrated in accordance with certain examples. Insuch methods 200, thelist server 110 receives a user input via a user device such asmobile device 120—Block 210. As a continuing example, consider a user providing the voice input “toys for Tommy from Wee Bee Toys” to ahome device 140 running anative application 144 to listen for voice commands. Thenative application 144 transmits the received voice data to theassistant server 160 overnetwork 99 for theassistant server 160 to perform speech-to-text-data conversion. Theassistant server 160 transmits a text file corresponding to voice input to thelist server 110 via an API (the receiving side of which,API 116, is shown inFIG. 1 ). In other examples, speech-to-text-data conversion occurs in either the user device, such ashome device 140,mobile device 120, andcomputing device 130. In another example, the speech-to-text-data conversion occurs inlist server 110 itself. - The
list server 110 parses the received user input for at least one of {product genus, product subgenus, product name, brand name, price information, retailer name, manufacturer name}—Block 220. In the continuing example,list server 110 uses keyword lists to identify data types of single-word and multi-word elements of the text file. Specifically, “toys,” is a product genus—but also appears as part of the string “wee_bee_toys,” a retailer name. In this case, the second use of “toys” is recognized as part of the string “wee_bee_toys.” In addition, in this case, thelist server 110 recognizes “Tommy” as a name. Note that “doll” is a product subgenus under “toys,” while a stock-keeping unit (SKU) descriptor of a specifically configured doll from a specific manufacturer (and possible a specific retailer) is the most granular level. Techniques such as Natural Language Processing (NLP), machine learning and other artificial intelligence approaches, and semi-automated classification, can be used in addition to, or in place of, keyword list comparisons. - Upon parsing a minimum set of product data for querying a shopping service, the
list server 110 queries a history of user activity using the parsed input—Block 230. In the continuing example, thelist server 110 queried the product genus “toys,” retailer “Wee Bee Toys,” and name “Tommy” are queried to a structured database of user purchase history maintained by thedata list server 110 to identify a plurality of products characterized by fields matching the parsed data. In the continuing example,shopping service 150 accepts a structured/tagged query {<genus=“toys”> AND <retailer=“Wee Bee Toys”> AND <name=“Tommy”>}. In some examples, wildcards and unstructured queries are used. - The
list server 110 receives from at least one queried user history, at least one product description responsive to the query—Block 240. In the continuing example, history maintained for the user byshopping server 110 returns 40 product descriptions across three sub-genera—“trucks,” “cars,” and “puzzles,” from which the user has previously purchased toys from Wee Bee Toys for Tommy. - While the continuing example illustrates the present technology using a user history maintained by the list server, the technology can use user histories maintained by other servers (for example, shopping service 150), and can use other sources of context such as user preferences, data from a user's email account, scanned receipts, popular items, sales items, purchase habit of others such as friends and social media personalities.
- The
list server 110 presents, via the user device, each received at least one product description to the user—Block 250. Referring toFIG. 3 , and continuing to refer to prior figures for context,methods 300 for presenting each received product description are shown, in accordance with certain examples. In such examples, thelist server 110 presents, via theuser device 120, a plurality of matching items in a hierarchy organized by product name, with lower hierarchy levels comprising one or more of price information, retailer name, manufacturer name, size, and quantity—Block 352. - Referring to
FIG. 4 , and continuing to refer to prior figures for context, auser interface screen 400 for presenting each received product description to the user via the user device is shown, in accordance with certain examples. In the continuing example, auser interface screen 400 foruser device 120 presented vianative application 144 includes the initial input “toys” from “WeeBee Toys” for the “Tommy” aslist item 410 along with ahierarchical representation 415 of the results returned byshopping service 150. The list item entry includes the retailer “WeeBee Toys” and intended recipient “Tommy” parsed from the user input. Thehierarchical representation 415 includes one second-level entry “Boys” 420, which is hyperlinked to separatenative application 144 user interface screens presenting those results under each respective heading.User interface screen 400 shows the “Boys” 420 sub-list to include lower levels of the hierarchy for “trucks” 422, “cars” 424, and “puzzles” 426. - Referring to
FIG. 5 , and continuing to refer to prior figures for context, auser interface screen 500 for presenting each received product description to the user via the user device is shown, in accordance with certain examples. In the continuing example, auser interface screen 500 foruser device 120 presented vianative application 144 is presented in response to the user selecting the “Trucks”hyperlink 422. Theuser interface screen 500 includesproduct list window 520.Product list window 520 displays product entries for two products (SuperTruck 524 and Dumpmaster 526) of entries returned in the category “Boys:Trucks” 522 fromshopping service 150 in response to the query built from the user input for “toys from Wee Bee Toys for Tommy.” The SuperTruck entry 524 includes anillustration 524 a, name andprice 524 b, and a “More info”button 522 c. The Dumpmaster entry 526 includes similar components forillustration 526 a, name andprice 526 b, and “More info”button 526 c. The product list window also includes a hyperlinked “Next Page” link for viewing the remaining product entries in in the category returned fromshopping service 150 in response to the query. Selecting the “More info” button will cause thelist server 110 to display a product page for the corresponding product via theuser device 120. While the user can use the list for tracking in-person shopping at brick-and-mortar retail locations, theuser interface screen 500 also includes a “SHOP YOUR LIST”button 530 that will, in some examples, link to a product page of the user interface. WhileFIG. 5 shows one checkbox entry of the list, the list can, and in most instances will, include multiple items. Depending on the display capabilities of the user device, more than one item per page can be displayed. With each type of user device, the technology can display multiple items across multiple pages. - Referring to
FIG. 6 , and continuing to refer to prior figures for context, auser interface screen 600 for presenting each received product description to the user via the user device is shown, in accordance with certain examples. In the continuing example, auser interface screen 600 foruser device 120 presented vianative application 144 includesproduct page 610. Product page 710 includesimage 524 a andproduct title 524 b similar to those shown in connection withFIG. 5 , along withproduct description 640. In particular,interface screen 600 includes “ADD TO CART”button 650 that adds the item to the user's cart for checkout. If the user is using the list to shop in person, then the list view ofFIG. 4 andFIG. 5 . - Referring to
FIG. 7 , and continuing to refer to prior figures for context,methods 700 to process inputs to electronic list systems are illustrated in accordance with certain examples. In such methods, thelist server 110, in response to receiving user selection of a presented item, orders the item for the user from a shopping service associated with the selected item. In the continuing example, selection of the “ADD TO CART” 750 button initiated the order process. In some examples, presenting includes presenting, via the user device, each previously purchased item with an indication that the item was previously purchased. In some examples, presenting includes presenting, via the user device, each previously purchased item with an indication of one or more of when it was purchased, from which retailer it was purchased, and notes on the recipient's review of the item. -
FIG. 8 depicts acomputing machine 2000 and amodule 2050 in accordance with certain examples. Thecomputing machine 2000 may correspond to any of the various computers, servers, mobile devices, embedded systems, or computing systems presented herein. Themodule 2050 may comprise one or more hardware or software elements configured to facilitate thecomputing machine 2000 in performing the various methods and processing functions presented herein. Thecomputing machine 2000 may include various internal or attached components such as aprocessor 2010,system bus 2020,system memory 2030,storage media 2040, input/output interface 2060, and anetwork interface 2070 for communicating with anetwork 2080. - The
computing machine 2000 may be implemented as a conventional computer system, an embedded controller, a laptop, a server, a mobile device, a smartphone, a set-top box, a kiosk, a router or other network node, a vehicular information system, one or more processors associated with a television, a customized machine, any other hardware platform, or any combination or multiplicity thereof. Thecomputing machine 2000 may be a distributed system configured to function using multiple computing machines interconnected via a data network or bus system. - The
processor 2010 may be configured to execute code or instructions to perform the operations and functionality described herein, manage request flow and address mappings, and to perform calculations and generate commands. Theprocessor 2010 may be configured to monitor and control the operation of the components in thecomputing machine 2000. Theprocessor 2010 may be a general purpose processor, a processor core, a multiprocessor, a reconfigurable processor, a microcontroller, a digital signal processor (“DSP”), an application specific integrated circuit (“ASIC”), a graphics processing unit (“GPU”), a field programmable gate array (“FPGA”), a programmable logic device (“PLD”), a controller, a state machine, gated logic, discrete hardware components, any other processing unit, or any combination or multiplicity thereof. Theprocessor 2010 may be a single processing unit, multiple processing units, a single processing core, multiple processing cores, special purpose processing cores, co-processors, or any combination thereof. According to certain examples, theprocessor 2010 along with other components of thecomputing machine 2000 may be a virtualized computing machine executing within one or more other computing machines. - The
system memory 2030 may include non-volatile memories such as read-only memory (“ROM”), programmable read-only memory (“PROM”), erasable programmable read-only memory (“EPROM”), flash memory, or any other device capable of storing program instructions or data with or without applied power. Thesystem memory 2030 may also include volatile memories such as random access memory (“RAM”), static random access memory (“SRAM”), dynamic random access memory (“DRAM”), and synchronous dynamic random access memory (“SDRAM”). Other types of RAM also may be used to implement thesystem memory 2030. Thesystem memory 2030 may be implemented using a single memory module or multiple memory modules. While thesystem memory 2030 is depicted as being part of thecomputing machine 2000, one skilled in the art will recognize that thesystem memory 2030 may be separate from thecomputing machine 2000 without departing from the scope of the subject technology. It should also be appreciated that thesystem memory 2030 may include, or operate in conjunction with, a non-volatile storage device such as thestorage media 2040. - The
storage media 2040 may include a hard disk, a floppy disk, a compact disc read only memory (“CD-ROM”), a digital versatile disc (“DVD”), a Blu-ray disc, a magnetic tape, a flash memory, other non-volatile memory device, a solid state drive (“SSD”), any magnetic storage device, any optical storage device, any electrical storage device, any semiconductor storage device, any physical-based storage device, any other data storage device, or any combination or multiplicity thereof. Thestorage media 2040 may store one or more operating systems, application programs and program modules such asmodule 2050, data, or any other information. Thestorage media 2040 may be part of, or connected to, thecomputing machine 2000. Thestorage media 2040 may also be part of one or more other computing machines that are in communication with thecomputing machine 2000 such as servers, database servers, cloud storage, network attached storage, and so forth. - The
module 2050 may comprise one or more hardware or software elements configured to facilitate thecomputing machine 2000 with performing the various methods and processing functions presented herein. Themodule 2050 may include one or more sequences of instructions stored as software or firmware in association with thesystem memory 2030, thestorage media 2040, or both. Thestorage media 2040 may therefore represent examples of machine or computer readable media on which instructions or code may be stored for execution by theprocessor 2010. Machine or computer readable media may generally refer to any medium or media used to provide instructions to theprocessor 2010. Such machine or computer readable media associated with themodule 2050 may comprise a computer software product. It should be appreciated that a computer software product comprising themodule 2050 may also be associated with one or more processes or methods for delivering themodule 2050 to thecomputing machine 2000 via thenetwork 2080, any signal-bearing medium, or any other communication or delivery technology. Themodule 2050 may also comprise hardware circuits or information for configuring hardware circuits such as microcode or configuration information for an FPGA or other PLD. - The input/output (“I/O”)
interface 2060 may be configured to couple to one or more external devices, to receive data from the one or more external devices, and to send data to the one or more external devices. Such external devices along with the various internal devices may also be known as peripheral devices. The I/O interface 2060 may include both electrical and physical connections for operably coupling the various peripheral devices to thecomputing machine 2000 or theprocessor 2010. The I/O interface 2060 may be configured to communicate data, addresses, and control signals between the peripheral devices, thecomputing machine 2000, or theprocessor 2010. The I/O interface 2060 may be configured to implement any standard interface, such as small computer system interface (“SCSI”), serial-attached SCSI (“SAS”), fiber channel, peripheral component interconnect (“PCI”), PCI express (PCIe), serial bus, parallel bus, advanced technology attached (“ATA”), serial ATA (“SATA”), universal serial bus (“USB”), Thunderbolt, FireWire, various video buses, and the like. The I/O interface 2060 may be configured to implement only one interface or bus technology. Alternatively, the I/O interface 2060 may be configured to implement multiple interfaces or bus technologies. The I/O interface 2060 may be configured as part of, all of, or to operate in conjunction with, thesystem bus 2020. The I/O interface 2060 may include one or more buffers for buffering transmissions between one or more external devices, internal devices, thecomputing machine 2000, or theprocessor 2010. - The I/
O interface 2060 may couple thecomputing machine 2000 to various input devices including mice, touch-screens, scanners, electronic digitizers, sensors, receivers, touchpads, trackballs, cameras, microphones, keyboards, any other pointing devices, or any combinations thereof. The I/O interface 2060 may couple thecomputing machine 2000 to various output devices including video displays, speakers, printers, projectors, tactile feedback devices, automation control, robotic components, actuators, motors, fans, solenoids, valves, pumps, transmitters, signal emitters, lights, and so forth. - The
computing machine 2000 may operate in a networked environment using logical connections through thenetwork interface 2070 to one or more other systems or computing machines across thenetwork 2080. Thenetwork 2080 may include wide area networks (WAN), local area networks (LAN), intranets, the Internet, wireless access networks, wired networks, mobile networks, telephone networks, optical networks, or combinations thereof. Thenetwork 2080 may be packet switched, circuit switched, of any topology, and may use any communication protocol. Communication links within thenetwork 2080 may involve various digital or an analog communication media such as fiber optic cables, free-space optics, waveguides, electrical conductors, wireless links, antennas, radio-frequency communications, and so forth. - The
processor 2010 may be connected to the other elements of thecomputing machine 2000 or the various peripherals discussed herein through thesystem bus 2020. It should be appreciated that thesystem bus 2020 may be within theprocessor 2010, outside theprocessor 2010, or both. According to certain examples, any of theprocessor 2010, the other elements of thecomputing machine 2000, or the various peripherals discussed herein may be integrated into a single device such as a system on chip (“SOC”), system on package (“SOP”), or ASIC device. - The present technology may comprise a computer program that embodies the functions described and illustrated herein, wherein the computer program is implemented in a computer system that comprises instructions stored in a machine-readable medium and a processor that executes the instructions. However, it should be apparent that there could be many different ways of implementing the present technology in computer programming, and the examples should not be construed as limited to any one set of computer program instructions. Further, a skilled programmer would be able to write such a computer program to implement the present technology as described herein based on the appended flow charts and associated description in the application text. Therefore, disclosure of a particular set of program code instructions is not considered necessary for an adequate understanding of how to make and use the technology described herein. Further, those skilled in the art will appreciate that one or more aspects of the technology described herein may be performed by hardware, software, or a combination thereof, as may be embodied in one or more computing systems. Moreover, any reference to an act being performed by a computer should not be construed as being performed by a single computer as more than one computer may perform the act.
- The technology described herein can be used with computer hardware and software that perform the methods and processing functions described herein. The systems, methods, and procedures described herein can be embodied in a programmable computer, computer-executable software, or digital circuitry. The software can be stored on computer-readable media. For example, computer-readable media can include a floppy disk, RAM, ROM, hard disk, removable media, flash memory, memory stick, optical media, magneto-optical media, CD-ROM, etc. Digital circuitry can include integrated circuits, gate arrays, building block logic, field programmable gate arrays (FPGA), etc.
- The example systems, methods, and acts described in the examples presented previously are illustrative, and, in alternative examples, certain acts can be performed in a different order, in parallel with one another, omitted entirely, and/or combined between different examples, and/or certain additional acts can be performed, without departing from the scope and spirit of various examples. Accordingly, such alternative examples are included in the scope of the following claims, which are to be accorded the broadest interpretation to encompass such alternate examples.
- Although specific examples have been described above in detail, the description is merely for purposes of illustration. It should be appreciated, therefore, that many aspects described above are not intended as required or essential elements unless explicitly stated otherwise. Modifications of, and equivalent components or acts corresponding to, the disclosed aspects of the examples, in addition to those described above, can be made by a person of ordinary skill in the art, having the benefit of the present disclosure, without departing from the spirit and scope of technology described herein defined in the following claims, the scope of which is to be accorded the broadest interpretation so as to encompass such modifications and equivalent structures.
