Referring to the drawings. a series of manually depressible keys 5 are pivotally mounted upon a spindle 6| mounted in the machine frame, each so key extending through a slot, in a front panel of the machine casing and is normally main in an uppermost position as indicated in Figure 3 by a spring 3*. The forwardend l of each key is located below the front edge of auniversal so clutch bar 10 extending across all the keys in the manner shown in Figure 6 which discloses a portion of the bar 10 extending at its forward edge over the ends l of five of the keys I. The bar 10 is connectedat its ends by links H (Figures 3 and 5) tea rod l2 arranged parallel to the bar Ijfl and mounted in the ends of the arms of a stirrup member 13. The stirrup member is fixed to an oscillatable spindle 14 carried in hearings in side plates I5, 15 of the machine frame, said spindie extending through the plate 18 and having an z arm 11, Figure 2, keyed thereon. The rod 12 extends through an aperture 18 formed in the plate 16 and is connected to the upper end of the arm. Tl. The arm I! is normally urged to the right in Figure 2 by a spring 19 and bears against the free 7 end of an armature 8|! of an electro-magnetic release device for the machine having an electroma net 49. is normally maintained in an upper position against-a stop 82 as indicated in'Figure 2, by a spring 88. Energization of the magnet 48 in a manner hereinafter described lowers the armature 88 so that the free end thereof is disposed ,5 opposite to a notch 11 in the arm 11 and would thus no. longer prevent-the said arm from being movedby the spring 18. The arm 11 is provided with a nose 84 normally disposed beneath a projection 85 of -an arm 88 hand to a shaft 8 which is rotatably mounted in bearings provided in the side plates 15, 18. The nose 84 is also normally disposed beneath the heel 81 of a latch 88 pivotally mounted at 88'-'upon the arm 88. A spring88 is arranged to urge the latch 88 in a clockwise direction, Figure 2; so that if "freed by the nose 84 the said latch would be moved so as to extend into one of a series of notches 88 formed around'the periphery of a collar 8I freely rotatable upon the shaft 8. The collar 8| is provided with a sprocket 2 .82. which is coupled by a chain 88 and train of gears 84 to an electric driving motor 85.
An electric switch for the motor 85 is adapted to be" actuated by the spindle 14 in the manner described in application Serial No. 483,578 which 25 has now matured into Patent No. 1,886,626 and a description of which it is not necessary to repeat in the present application.
The universal clutch bar 18 is normally mainm tained in engagement at its ends with fixed stops 30 88 one of which is shown in Figures 3, 5, and 18.

The bars 88, I88 are provided .at their ends with limbs I8I which are pivotally mounted at their free ends upon rods I82 carried by the machine frame. The bars 88, I88 are normally urged tom wards the spindle 4| by a spring I88, Figure 18, but are maintained in the positions illustrated in the drawings by a cam I84, Figure 5, on the shaft 8 which bears against a roller I85 carried by a pivoted arm I88 to the free end of which one end of each of a pair of links I81 is pivotally connected, the other endsof the links being provided with slots I88 into which extend pins I88 carried by extensions II8 provided upon the limbs I8I of the respective .bars 88, I88. A bar III is con- 50 nected between the limbs I8I of each setting bar 88, I88 and one arm II2 of a double-armed lever .I I3 which is pivotally mounted upon the correspondingrod I82 is arranged to bear against the I bar III through the medium of a spring H4.

Each sleeve I2I 65 is provided with a forked extension I22 arranged to engage with a guide bar I23 which is carried by a pair of plates I2 secured to-a printing cylinder 2 and the hub 2 of which (Figure 3) is keyed to the shaft 3.

I2I is provided with a stop I24 one of which is illustrated in Figure 3 which is arranged to co-operate with a series of circumferentially and axially displaced steps I25 formed upon a barrel I28 which is secured to a type wheel 76 I21 which is rotatably mounted upon a spindle I28 carried by the plates I2. Each type wheel I21 (only one of which is shown in Figure 3) is urged by a spring in a clockwise direction in Fisure 3 in the manner described in the aforesaid Patent No. 1,886,626. In thenormal position of 5 the parts illustrated in the drawings the stops I24 and sleeves I2I are located nearest to the printing cylinder 2 in the axial direction of the shaft 8 and a step I25 is-arranged in engagement therewith which ensures that a zero type face upon each of the wheels I21 is disposed outwardly from the shaft 8 so as to be located at the same radial distance from the axis of the shaft 8 as the general printing surface of the printing cylinder 2, that is to say, the surface or path generated by the outer faces of the various types on the cylinder which are effective'to print when the cylinder rotates. Each type wheel I21 is provided with type faces equally disposed around the periphery thereof numbering 0 to 9 and a corresponding number of steps I are provided upon the barrel I28, so that any of the faces may be brought to the outermost or printing position relatively to the cylinder 2, by rotation of the respective type wheel. 25
The operation of the parts so far described is as follows:-
Depression of a key I such as is illustrated in Figure9, causes the differential abutments 81, 88 to be disposed in. the path of movement of their 80 respective setting bars 88, I 88 and simultaneously the nose I of the depressed key lifts the universal clutch bar 18 clear of the stops 86. The depression of the key is caused in a manner hereinafter described to actuate a switch mechanism 85 which energizes the magnet 48 so that the armature is moved into alignment with the notch 11*. The spring 18 thereupon moves the arm 11, rod 12 and clutch bar 18 to the "right in Figures 2 and :3 thus causing an oscillation of the spindle 40 14 which closes the switch for the motor 88. This movement of the arm 11 disengages the nose 84 from below the projection 85 andthe heel 81 of the latch 88. The latch "is moved by the spring into engagement with one of the notches 88 so that the arm 88 is coupled by the latch to the -collar 8I and to the driving motor 85 "so that the I85 and permitthe spring I88 to move the setting bars 88, I88 towards the spindle 4I. This movement of the bars 88 and I88 is limited by the differential abutments 81 and 88 of the depressed key. The differential movements of the bars 88 and I88 thus effected produces, through the medium of the levers H8 and H8, corresponding differential movements of the sleeves I2 I and stops I24 thereon, axially of the shaft 8. The movements of the stops I24 permit the springs of the type wheels I21 to rotate the same until further rotation' thereof is prevented by one of the steps I28.
' The arrangement is such that the differential rotatype faces mounted upon the printing cylinder are arranged to be inked by an inking roller I28 and thereafter to print upon a ticket through the medium of an impression roller I88, Figure 3, the
printed ticket being delivered through the me- 7 dium of a friction roller I3I through a slot I32 in the upper panel of the machine casing.
Each type wheel [21 is provided with a pinion formed of pins I33 arranged vin mesh witha toothedquadrant l34 (Figure 3) pivotally mountcommencement of a printing operation removes" the stops I36 from the path of movement of the arms I35 so as 'to permit rotation thereof with the printing cylinder 2 androtation thereof relatively to the said cylinder as the type wheels I21 rotate'upon the spindle I28.
Towards the end of a cycle of operation of the machine-a cam I31, Figure 5, keyed to the shaft the stirrup member 13 so as to restore the stirrup and rod 12 to the normal position in which the stops I36 are again interposed in the path of th arms I35. This causes a rotation of the quadrants I34 with the printing cylinder} to cease as soon as the arms I'abut against the stops I36 and thereafter rotation of the printing cylinder 2 causes relative movement between the quadrant B4 and the pinions I33 so as to restore thetype 30'- wheels I21 tothe normal zero-position.
V The restorationfof the rod 12 to the normal position by the cam I31 also restores the nose 84 on the arm 11 to the normal position so that as the printing cylinder rotates-during the latter to part'of a revolution the heel 81 abuts against the noose 84 and the latch 88 is disengaged from the notched collar 9| at the same moment as the projection 85 of the arm 86 abuts against the nose 84; the return movement of the rod -12 also causes the return oscillatory movement of the 20 3 is arranged to actuate an arm I38 carried by spindle 14 which opens the switch for the motor j 95. In the stationary position of the print-- ing cylinder 2 a rod I2 slidably mounted in plates -I2 carried by the printing cylinder is,arr'anged between the plates III.' "The rod I2 is provided 5 with a grooved collar I3 which is arranged to engage a pin I4 mounted upon a crank I5'secured to a spindle I6v pivotally mounted in a bracket I5 secured to the boss 2 of the printing cylinder. The spindle I6 carries the type 10 member 5 (provided with twotype faces 5, or 5) provided with a roller I1 arranged in engagement with a blade spring I8 arranged to maintain either of the type faces 5*, or 5 in register with the surface of revolution generated by the printing cyll5 inder. It will be observed that a longitudinal move-, ment of the master member 4 is communicated through the link 8 to the rod 9 which in turn moves the rod I2, collar I3, the said collar mov- 20 ing the pin I4 and thereby rotating the spindle I6 and type member 5 therewitlrin one direction or the other into one of two alternative positions, one of which is-indicated in full lines and the other in dot and dash lines in Figure 4. Thus 26 the position of the master member 4 determines which of the type faces 5, 5 will be arranged in' alignment with the surface of revolutiongenerated by the printing cylinder 2, and therefore will be in a position to print upon a ticket when 30 the printing cylinder rotates.
Adjacent the gate 'l'the master member ti is provided with a notch i9 (Figure 3) "which engages a pin 28 mounted upon an arm 2| of insulating material secured to one end of a con- 35 tact device 22 which is insulatedand is pivotally mounted in bearings 23 provided in theiframe of the machine (Figures 1 and 6).

The contact of the blade '26 with the bar 24 is utilized; in a manner hereinafter described to register a. bet at a central control station upon- 7 the win registering mechanism of the. horse, corresponding to the key depressed. When the master member 4 is moved into theposition indicated in Figure-1'0, the depression of a key I causes a contact to; be similarly established between the 7 v Three counters 29, 30, and 3| are mounted upon the machine and are each adapted to be coupled by a link 32 to a rod 32 carried in a swinging frame 32 which is operatively connected to an eccentric 32, Figure 4, keyed to the shaft 3. The rod 32* extends through a slot 32 in one end of the link 32-and the closed end of the slotted portion is urged against the rod by a spring 32. The normal position of the rod 32 is shown in Figure 3 and rotation of the shaft 3 causes the eccentric 32 to move the said rod to the right and back again, the movement to the right permitting the springs 32 to move the links 32 to the right and the movement of the rod to the left ensuring that positive return of the links; The counter 29 is arranged to be operated in a manner hereinafter described only when tickets are printed upon by" the type face 5 and so register the number of tickets of' that character issued by the machine, whilst the counter 30 registers the number of tickets issued which hear an imprint of the type face 5 whereas the counter 3| registers the aggregate of the counters 29 and".
.In order to effect the correct selection of the counters by movements of the master member 4,
the same is provided with a cam face 43 arranged in engagement with a roller 42 pivotally mountedv upon one end of an arm 40 which is pivotally mounted upon a spindle 4| arranged to sup- T port the keys I is connected to one end of a link 39 the other of the machine; The arm 40 end of which is provided with a slot arranged to receive a pin 38, mounted upon one end of a pivotally mounted selector member 96. The selectormember 35 is provided with apertures 33, 34, and 35 arranged in staggered formation at points along the length thereof.
' When the eccentric 32 rotates with the shaft 3, it swings the frame 32 to the right in Figure 3 and thus enables the springs 32 to move the links 32 to the right as the rod 32* carried by the said frameprogresses in that direction. It is to be noted however that this movement of the links can only occur when the corresponding aperture 33, 34, or 35 in the member 35 is disposed opposite to an extension 33,.onth'e link 32 so that the said extension can pass through the aperture;
otherwiseonly a very slight movement of the link is eifected which is limited by the free end of the extension thereof abutting against the member 36. When a link 32 is permitted tomove the fulldistance to the right with the rod '32 and'is then retracted with -the'rod to the normalposition by the actionof the eccentric 32, the counter which is operatively connected with the link is actuated and one unit-is added thereto.
- ,The arrangement is such that when the master member 4 is inthe position indicated in Figure 3 the aperture 33 iii the selector member 36 is disposed Opposite to the extension 31 of the link 32 which is arranged to operatelthe counter 29, the aperture 35 is so dimensioned -as to be disposed opposite, to the extension of the link of the counter 3|, whilst theaperture 34 is maintained'out of register with the extensiom of the link which operates the counter 30, so that when themachine is operatd'in this position the eration of the machine by 4 which includes the electromagnetic releasing deple the universal bar ill with the spring 52 for wise movement to the said arm which results in a counters 29 and 3| will be actuated whilst the counter 39 will remain unaffected.

scribed, the said member is constructed so that thefull width thereof -maintains the gate 1 closed whilst depressions 41 provided at points along the length therein are of such a depth as to ensure that when the said member -4 is in either of its extreme operative positions one of the depressions is aligned with the gate and provides a free space between a series of balls constituting the gate 1 which permits the depression of'one key only at a time between the balls.
When a machine is connected with a central control station for the purpose of registeringthe number and class of tickets issued thereby an op eration of a key establishes an electric circuit vice 49 for the machine (Figure 2) and also contacts 53 and 5| of-a make and break device, illustrated in Figure 5, which is arranged to be acv tuated by a cam in the form of a collar 52 hav- I ing a recess 52 and keyed upon the shaft 3', the

In a ticket printing and issuing machine the combination of a rotary printing cylinde a type member movably mounted on said cylinder and having at least two type faces either of which can be brought-selectively into position for printing by movement of said type member, actuating means operatively connected to said type member for selectively moving the same, said means being carried'on saidprinting cylinder and disposed eccentrically thereof, and manually reciprocable 15 means separated from but adapted by such reciprocation to co-operate with said actuating means to thereby selectively move said type member.

In a ticket printing and issuing machine the so combination of a rotary printing cylinder, a type member movabiy mounted on said cylinder and ,having at least two type faces either of which can be brought selectively into position for print-I ing by movement of said type member, actuating means operatively connected to said type member for selectively moving the same, said means being carried on said printing cylinder and disposed eccentrically thereof and manually reciprocable means separated from but adapted by 80 such reciprocation to co-operate with said actuating means solely in a predetermined position of said printing cylinder about its axis of'rotation to thereby selectively move said type member. i
. 6. In a ticket printing and issuing machine the combination of a rotary printing .cylinder, having a predetermined normal stationary position;
