to be made, it is often found desirable to make a complete entry on one of the sheets and only a partial entry on another, such as for example the total amount and the cost.
15 Heretoiore, to produce an entry as above described, it was necessary to make two originals which required two set-ups oi the machine. It I is the purpose of this invention to simultaneously print original entries without the necessity 20 of duplicating the work or making two originals one after the other, or to print one of the sheets with a complete record thereon while the other sheet receives only a portion of the record.
The chief objects of the invention are the 25 provision of a plurality of platens, each having a plurality of printing elements coacting therewith which are selected in pairs by means 01' the usual depressible keys and are actuated to position them in the printing line by means of an actu- 30 ator common in adding machine construction.
A further object is the provision of a plurality of platens arranged for longitudinal movements with and independently of each other and being each provided with a paper table for guiding a sheet of paper therearound upon which simultaneous impressions may be made at various places thereon.

The link 22 is connected for movement with the link I! by means of a tension spring 23 fixed to the pin 2| and to a pin 24 on the link l8 providing a yieldable connection therewith when the actuatin mechanism is operated and the bell.-crank I6 is withheld from movement by means of the link I4 and the rack bar I! which is withheld by means of a keyboard lock mechanism common in adding machine construction (not shown).
The bell-crank I6 is also connected at 25 to a vertically disposed slide member 26 provided with elongated slot openings 26a and 26b for sliding movements on a-pair of transversely extending guide members 21 and 28. The vertically disposed slide member 26 is connected to a pair of rockable type bars 29 and 39 respectively by means of a pair of links 3| and 32 which are pivotally connected to the member 26 at 33 and 34 and to the type bars 29 and 39 at 35 and 36. The type bars 29 and 39 are pivotally connected at 31 and 38 to a pair of links 39 and 49 respectively which are pivotally supported on the shafts 4| and 42 and with the companionlinks 3| and 32 support the type bars 29 and 39 on floating centers 3631 and 36-38.
The links 39 and 49 are provided with extensions 43 and 44 respectively, adapted to be engaged by means of the extensions 45 and .46 of a member 41 carried for sliding movements on a transversely extending shaft 48 by means of a slot opening 49 therein forming a tripping mechanism for the links 39 and 49. The lower end of the member 41 is pivotally connected at 59 to a rocker arm 5| carried on a transversely extending shaft 62 and has its free end portion 63 normally engaged by an ear 54 of the vertically disposed slide member 26. The member 41 is normally retained in raised position by means of a tension spring 55 secured to a shaft 66 and to the rocker 'arm 5| which normally re tains the extensions 45 and 46 of this member 41 into the path of the extensions 43 and 44 of the links 39 and 49, thereby retaining these links in a fixed locked position for the rocking movements of the type bars 29 and 39 thereon when the vertically disposed slide member 26 is moved by means of the bell-crank l6.
The links 39 and 49 are urged to rock in a rearward direction ori'thelr shafts 4| and 42 by means of the tension springs 51 and 59 fixed thereto and to the shaft 29 and 59 which normally tend to throw the type bars rearwardly as the extensions 45 and 46 of the member 41 are withdrawn from engagement with the extensions 43 and 44 of the links 39 and 49.
Both of the links 39 and 49 are provided with outwardly extending integral portions 69 and 6| respectively adapted to be engaged by the pins 62 and 63 carried on relatively short arms 64 and 65 which are pivotally mounted on the shafts 4| and 42. These arms 64 ,and 65 are connected together by means'of a link 66 and are arranged for movement by means of a depending link 61 connected to the pin 62 with its lower end portion pivoted at 69 to a bell-crank 69 supported on a shaft 19 and with the other leg connected to the actuating mechanism (not shown), by means of a link 1|.
Each pair of type bars 29 and 39 is arranged and connected to be operated by the actuating mechanism in the manner as above described, and it isthought that a description of one will sufiice for a description of all.
' The link 61 has a finger 12 pivotally connected thereto at 13 and normally urged upwardly by means of a compression spring .14 and is limited in its upward movement by means of an ear 15 on the link 61. This finger 12 is positioned a sufficient distance below the rocker arm 5| so as to permit of a free movement therebetween as the link 61 is moved upwardly by means of the bell-crank 69 and the connecting link 1| under the control of the actuating mechanism (not shown).
The purpose of the free movement between the finger 12 and the rocker arm 5| is to permit of the disengagement of the pins 62 and 63 with the extensions 69 and 6| of the links 39 and 49. The connecting link 1| operating the release of the-pins 62 and 63 with the extensions 69 and 6| is connected with the actuating mechanism so as to be moved subsequent to the movement of the links l9 and 22 actuating the bellcrank |6 for positioning the vertically disposed slide 26 and the type bars 29 and 39 connected thereto by means of the links 3| and 32 in the printing line. These type bars 29 and 39 coaot with a pair of platens 11 and 19 which are normally positioned in the printing line. As the actuating mechanism is operated a greater distance upon its normal movement, the finger 12 carried on the link 61 will engage the end 53 of the rocker arm 5| and force the same upwardly when the'ear 54 of the vertically disposed slide member 26 is out of engagement therewith and permit of a rocking movement of the arm 5| on the shaft 52 and cause a downward pull on-the member 41 against the tension of the spring 55 and release the extensions 46 and 46 thereof from the extensions .43 and 44 of the links 49 permitting them to be urged rearwardly by means of the tension springs 51 and 56 and carrying the type bars 29 and 39 therewith for an impact against the platens 11 and 19. a
The type bars 29 and 39 are selected in the usual manner by means of the keys l9 and are positioned in the printing line by means of their LT engagement with the rack l3 and as the machine is operated, the following sequential movements must occur: the selected type bars 29 and 39 are first positioned in the printing line and thenthe pins 62 and 63 are moved out of engagement with the extensions 69 and 6| of the links 39 and 49. Then the finger 12 carried on the link61 which actuates the release of the pins 62 and 63 carries this finger 12 inteengagement with the 'rocker arm 5| and upon a further movement,
will raise the same upwardly causing the member .41 to be drawn downwardly to cause the exrocking movement of the links 39 and 49 caused by the engagement of the pins 62 and 63 with the extensions so and 6| thereof and at which time the finger 12 will be free of the rocker arm 5| and release the member 41 to be urged upwardly by means of the spring 65 until the extensions 45 and 46 thereof engage the extensions 43 and 44 of the links 39 and 49 retaining them in normal locked position.
The type bars 29 and 39 are operated by means of a vertically disposed slide member 26 which has an ear 64 overlying the end 53 of the rocker arm 5| so that as the corresponding finger 12 is moved into engagement with the arm 5|, the same will be withheld from movement by means of its contact with the ear 54. This-ear 54 forms a safety lock for the tripping mechanism 41 to prevent the type bars 29 and 39 from being moved for an impact against the platens 11 and 18 in those banks where the keys l9 have not been depressed. when the rocker arm 6| is withheld against the ear 54 upon the operation of the machine, the finger 12 on the link 61 will abut this arm 5| and will yield against the tensionof the torsion spring 14 on the pivot 18 and permit-of 'a further upward movement of the links 81 without effecting a rocking movement of the rocker arm and the release of the member 41 to release the relation with the type bars 29. and 88 supported on the platen shafts 19 and 88 respectively, and are carried in carriages 8i and 82 which are provided with pairs of rails 88 and 84 respectively coacting with pairs of rails 85 and 86 to form ball races for the carriages 8| and 82. The rails 85 and 88 are fixed to U-shaped end plates or frame members 81 and 88 which are pivotally mounted at 89 and 98 to the side frames 9I and 92 of a main carriage 93. The main carriage 98 is provided with a pair of rails 94 which provide for a longitudinal movement thereof on the tracks 95 and 98.
The platens 11 and 18 are arranged for independent longitudinal sliding movements on their platen shafts 19 and 88 in their carriages 8| and 82 and are retained in fixed adjusted position by means of the springs 91 fixed to the earriages 8I and 82, having their free end portions 91a,overhanging the rear rails 85 and 86 respectively. The springs 91 are identicaland are of a T-shape formation, the shank 98 of which is provided with the openings 99 through which the a screws I88 extend to secure the same to the carcarriages 8| and 82 and extending upwardly at an riages. The free end portion 91a of the spring 91 is provided with a depression 'I8I adapted to coact with serrated edges I82 and I88 on each of the rearwardly disposed rails 85 and 86 guiding the carriages 8i and 82, and forming retaining means to releasably secure these carriages-'81 and 82' of each of the platens 11 and 18 in fixed adjusted position with respect -to a longitudinal sliding movement independently of the main carriage 98. a
The platens 11 and 18 are each provided with a paper table I84 fixed to and carried with the angle, to the rear of these platens and having its forward ends I85 terminating into lips I 85a formed to conform to the contour ofthe platen to guide the paper fed therearound outwardly to the rear of the machine. A guard I86 is arranged in -spaced relation with each of the paper tables I84 for directing the inserted paper therebetween to the platen rolls to be g ipp d by means of the feed rollers I81 carried by the paper tables I84 and coacting with the platens 11 and 18. A paper rest I88 is also carried on'each of the carriages 8i and 82 to support the paper to guide the same outwardly of the machine. v I
The platen shafts 19 and 88 are preferably of square stock providing a key for the turning movements of each of the platens while permitting them to slide longitudinally on these shafts which are journaled in the frame members 81 and 88 and have the twirler-knobs I89-I89 fixed thereto outwardly on one side of the main carriage '93 and the twil'ler-knobs I I8I I 8 keyed to the other ends of these platen shafts I9 and 88 and arranged for sliding movements thereon. These twirler-knobs I89 and I I8 provide means for lineadjusting each of the platens 11. and 18 at whatever position they may be on their respective platen shafts 19 and 88.
The twirler-knobs'll8 are provided with hubs III which loosely carry sprocket-wheels H2 and [I3 a ound which a chain I I4 extends connecting the two for simultaneously driving them. In-

tegral with each of the sprocket-wheels H2 and 8 are clutch teeth "5 and Iliywhlch are-nor-' mally engaged by the respective clutch members II1 formed on the inner end portion of the hubs I I I of the twirler-knobs I I8 carried on the platen shafts 19 and 88. These clutch members II1 are each provided with toothed portions IIB adapted to engage the clutch teeth H5 and IIS of the sprocket-wheels H2 and H8 for a driving connection therewith in either direction of their movement being contr'olled for engagement and disengagement to manually adjust the platens for horizontallly aligned printing. The hubs of the sprockets H2 and H8 are provided with annular grooves H9 and I28 into which the ends I2I of L-shaped members I22 extend. These L-shaped members I22 are secured to the frame member 88 and retain-the sprocket-wheels H2 and H8 in aligned position with respect to each other. To retain the clutch members I I1 in either a clutched 20 or declutched position, I provide the depressed portion I28 .formed from the L-shaped brackets ,l22 which are provided with'a V-portion I24 that normally extends into the annular groove I25 of each of the clutch members II I. These 25 depressed portions I28 provide a yielding tension in the grooves I25 of the clutch members II1 and'permit of an easy release thereof by merely forcing the twirler-knobs I I8 inwardly which will cause these depressed portions I28 to yield and 30 retain the clutch members out of engagement with the clutch teeth H5 and IIS of the sprocketwheels H2 and H8.
The manual rotary adjustment of these platen shafts 19 and 88 by means-of the twirler-knobs I89 and II 8 is for the purpose of adJusting the platens independently of their mechanical feed means which will be presently described.
Adjacent the sprocket-wheel Il2 and-integral therewith is a ratchet-wheel I26 .which receives its driving power by means of a dog I21 pivotally carried on an arm I28 at I29 and whichis movable with-a rockable member I88 that is pivoted in the side frames 9| and 92 by means of The pawl I21 is normally urged into engagement with the ratchet-wheel I28 by means of a. tension spring I82 connected thereto and to the arm I28. An L-shaped arm I88 is pivotally mounted on the trunnion I8I adjacent the arm I28 and is provided with a pin I84 adapted to extend outwardly of the arm I28 and which may be positioned into the path of the pawl I21 upon its movement to render the pawl ineifective with the ratchet-wheel I28. A
v quadrant I95 is secured to the side frame 92 of the carriage 98 and retains the L-shaped arm I83 with the pin I84 thereof into or out of the path of the pawl I 21.
The rockable member I38 overlies a push-rod I98 which extends upwardly about midway of the length of the carriage 98 and which is connected for movement with the actuating mechanism upon the reverse movement of the actuator shaft for causing a rocking movement of the rockable member and a step by step feed of the pawl I21 with the ratchet-wheel I28.and the upper platen shaft 88 will be turnedthereby'by means of the chain H4 and the clutches II5II8 and IIG-I I8.

of the feed pawl I21 carried on the arm I28 fixed to the movable'member I38 and operable by the push-rod I38 connected to the operating mechanism and which may be rendered inoperable at the will of the operator In; means of manually moving the L-shaped arm I33 to cause the pin I34 thereof to be positioned into the path of the pawl I21 and withhold the same from engagement with the ratchet-wheel I28.
' It will be noted that the platens 11'and 18 are carried bodily on the frame members 81 and 88 which are mounted for swinging movements on the side frames 8| and 92 of the main carriage 93 at 89 and 98 which permits the operator to bodily swing the platens 11 and 18 as a unit with the frame members 81 and 88 on these pivots 89 and 98 to substantially a horizontal position (dotted lines Fig. 3), to permit of visibility while aligning and adjusting the paper inse ted in the desired position to be printed. The frame members 81 and 88 support a transversely extending shaft I31 which carries an L-shaped a'rm I38 on each end thereof which is provided with a finger grip I39 which coacts with a fixed finger grip I48 formed outwardly of the frame members 81 and 88. The free end I. of the arm I38 is provided with an extension I42 adapted to normally engage a notched-out portion I43 in the bosses I44 of the side frames 9| and 92 for locking and withholding the platens in their normal position and aligned in printing relation with the type bars 29 and 38. Each of the ends I42 of the arms I38 is also adapted to engage a notched-out portion I45 positioned at approximately 90 of the notch I43 in the side frames 9I and 92. These arms I38 are normally urged with the ends I42 thereof inthe notch I43 of the boss m by means or a tension spring us fixed to the arm I38 and to a pin I41 fixed in the frame member 81. After the platens TI and II are adjusted longitudinally on their platen shafts 19 and 88 respectively; the line-spacing may be had by manually turning the twirler-knobs I89 and I I8 and during the operation of the machine, a step y step rotary feed of each of the platens will be had which forms automatic line-spacing means during the printing operations offthe machine while the pawl I21 is in operative relation with the ratchet-wheel I28.
It is sometimes found desirable to bodily car-'= ry the platens 11 and 18. while they are in their adjusted positions and in order to do so, I provide a normal centering means designated as a whole as I48 which comprises a pair of inwardly directed opposed arms I49 and I58 supported on the bolts I5I and I52 seemed to an upwardly extending flange I53 of the adding machine. The arms I 49 and I58 are provided with the pins carriage 83.
I54 .and I55 respectively adapted to ,extend through the openings I58 and I51 in the flange I53 and are connected together by means of a tension spring I58 which exerts a tension on the arms I49 and I58 to hold them-in raised position 5 ments in the side frames 9| and 92 of the main The adjustable members I83 are formed to snugly fit the square shaft I84 and are arranged for sliding movements thereon to adjust the same at any desired position.
The members I83 are each provided with outwardly extending ends I82 which have a stud I85 fixed thereto and adapted to extend upwardly through a flange I88 which is provided with a cam member I81plvoted to the stud I85 by means of a pin I88 and whichis provided with a finger grip I89 for manually adjusting the same. When the members I83 are properly positioned and clamped by means of the cam I 81 to the square shaft. I84, and the main carriage 93 is moved in one direction or the other engaging either the arms I49 or I58, the same will be caused to yield --against the tension of the spring I58 while the other arm which is not being engaged'remains in position forming an abutment against which the end I82 of the member I83 abuts, forming a permanent stop therefor at which time the armthat has been depressed will be urged upwardly by means .of the spring I58, and lock the extension I 82in the space I8I provided by the notchedout portions I59 and I88 of these arms I49 and I58 while in their normal positions.
In order to release the main carriage 93 for longitudinal sliding movements, 1 provide an arm I18 fixed to each end of the square shaft I84 outwardly of the side frames 9i and 92. Each of the arms I18 is provided with a finger piece "I 5 and is retained in a normal raised position by means of a tension spring I12 fixed thereto and to a pin I13 fixed in the side frames 9| and 92. The finger piece I" serves to manually rock the shaft I84 and raise the extension I82 of the member I88 clamped thereto out of engagement with the opening I8I formed by the arms I49 and I58 at which time the carriage will be free to be moved until again engaged by the extension I82 of the next member I 83 in the same manner as 5.5 above described, and the distance which the main carriage 98 is permitted to move, depends upon the positioning of these members I83 on the square shaft I84.
A ribbon I 18 and I11.is arranged in each of the printing lines between the platen 11 and the type bars 29 and between the platen 18 and the type bars 38. These ribbons I18 and I 11 arearranged for a feed during the operating movements of the machine and .the mechanism therefor is not shown in the drawings as any type of ribbon feed may be employed.
, Each of the platens 11 and 18 may be indi- 'vidually adjusted by means of declutching the the results which maybe had with the dual type of platens and coacting type bars therefor. In Fig. 8, the printing is shown in a vertical line on the top sheet such as under the heading "Serial number the number 212 appears, under Quantity" the number 2| appears, under Total" I69 appears, and under Cost the amount of 280.10 appears. n the second line of the top sheet the numbers I40, I8, I28 and the cost 6.00 appear, and directly below and corresponding with the serial number, quantity, total and cost. All of the numbers are inserted in a vertical line below the totals under which they are to be positioned, while on the companion sheet which is printed at the same time, the total I89 and the cost 280.10 appear in -a vertical line and the total I20 and cost 116.00 are in the next space and also in a vertical line, or in the other words, the totals and the costs are in horizontal alignment in the lower sheet and the total amount of 396.10 appears at the right-hand edge of the sheet, while in the top sheet the same amount appears vertically aligned in the cost column. This is accomplished by means of a step by step feed mechanism of the platen being fed by the dog I21 engaging the ratchet-wheel I26 and driving the upper'platen so that the lower platen was clear of the typebars 29 at the time the serial numbers and the quantity numbers were inserted in the top sheet. In Fig. 9 a full record is shown on both of the sheets with the imprinting in a vertical line on the top sheet and in a horizontal line on the lower sheet.
These facsimiles only indicate various types of printing for the purpose of illustrating the kind of work which may be accomplished with a machine of this type, but many other combinations may be arranged.
With a means as above described for clutching and declutching the individual platens with respect to the automatic driving mechanism for line-spacing them as the machine is being operated, each of the platens may be operated independently of one another under the control of the driving mechanism or both of them may be operated as in the case of printing a line of figures on both sheets and all in vertical alignment. Either of the carriages may be adjusted longitudinally so as to print at the desired position on the paper. In addition to the individual longitudinal adjustments of the platens, they may also be adjusted bodily by means of the main carriage 83. g
I contemplate as being included in these improvements all such changes, variations and departures from what is thus specifically illustrated combination with a pair of platens arranged in superposed relation one with the other and type carrying elements enacting therewith, of means whereby said platens maybe adjusted longitudinally with respect to each other, and means whereby said platens may be bodily'carried independently of said longitudinal adjustment.
2. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a plurality of platens and type carrying elements coacting therewith, of means for causing a step by step rotary movement of the platens, said platens being'carried for longitudinal movements with respect to each 10 other, means releasably holding the platens in adjusted longitudinal positions, and means whereby said platens may be bodily carried while in their adjusted positions.
3. In combination with an adding machine having a duplicate set of type carrying elements a main carriage, platens arranged on the main carriage adapted to receive the impressions of said type carrying elements, means for adjusting and retaining the platens on the main carriage in printing relation with the type carrying elements, and means controlling a step by step rotary movement of the platens while in their adjusted positions.
4. In a key-set adding machine having type carrying type bars arranged in sets and an operating mechanism therefor, a main carriage, platens carried on the main carriage and adapted to receive the impressions of the selected type of the type bars, said platens being carried for independent movements and for movements with each other on the main carriage, and line-spacing means operatively connecting the platens and arranged with the operating mechanism for a step by step rotary movement of the platens.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination with a main carriage, of a pair of platens arranged for longitudinal movements and in superposed relation one with the other on the main carriage, type carrying elements coacting with each of the platens, retaining means whereby said platens may be adjusted longitudinally with respect to each other, and adjustable means. on said main carriage to determine the positions thereof while bodily carrying the platens as a unit for longitudinal adjustments therewith.
6. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a main carriage, of a plurality of platens carried for longitudinal movements on the main carriage, a set of type carrying elements for each of the platens, yieldable means retaining the platens releasably positioned with respect to their longitudinal movements on the main carriage, line-spacing means operatively connecting each of the platens, and means for 5r rendering said line-spacing means ineffective with one or the other of the platens.
7. In a key-set adding machine having type carrying type bars arranged in sets, a main carriage, platens carried for independent movements on the main carriage and adapted to be normally positioned in a printing line to receive the impressions of the selected type of the type bars, feed means associated with each of the platens for causing a rotary step by step feed thereof, and manually manipulative means associated with the main carriage and the adding machine forming means for selectively positioning said main cagliage for bodily carrying the platens therewi 8? In combination with an adding machine having a duplicate set oftype carrying elements, a main carriage, a platen for each set of type carrying elements, said platens being carried for iongitudinal movements and for swinging movements 76 on said main carriage, said longitudinal movements permitting of independent adjustments of the carriages, while said swinging movements provide for the positioning of said platens to render visibility to the operator.
9. In combination with an adding machine having duplicate type carrying elements, a main carriage duplicate platens for said type carrying elements adapted to be individually moved longitudinally on the main carriage, line-spacing means operatively connecting said platens with the actuating mechanism of the adding machine, and lock means releasably securing the platens for a swinging movement on the main carriage providing visibility for the longitudinal adjustments of the platens.
10. The combination with -a dual platen and type bars therefor, of a main carriage supporting said platens for individual longitudinal movements thereon, of line-spacing means for each of the platens, engageable means operatively connecting the platens with the line-spacing means, and means for rendering said line -spacing means ineflective while connected to said platens.
11. The combination with a main carriage, a plurality of platens supported on the main carriage in printing position with type bars adapted to coact therewith, said platens being movable for adjustments longitudinally of their axis, means retaining the platens in adjusted positions, line-spacing mechanism for the platens, and means whereby the main carriage and platens may be moved longitudinally as a unit while said platens are in their adjusted positions.
12; The combination with a plurality of platens supported in printing position and having key selected type carrying type bars coacting therewith for simultaneously making a plurality of like impressions, said platens being selectively movable longitudinally to various longitudinal positions into and out of the path of the type bars, a main carriage bodily supporting the platens in their adjusted positions, and means coacting with the main carriage adapted to be selectively set to predetermine the longitudinal positioning thereof to position the platens to receive impressions at predetermined positioned thereon.
13. The combination with a plurality of platens supported in printing position in an adding machine and having key selected type carrying type bars coacting therewith for simultaneously making like impressions thereon, said platens being movable longitudinally with respect to each other, a. main carriage supporting the platens in printing position with the type bars, stop and retaining means on the machine, and adjustable means on the main carriage coacting with the stop and retaining means, said adjustable means being manually releasable from said stop and retaining means for permitting of longitudinal adjustments of the main carriage to predetermined positionsbn the machine.
14. The combination with a plurality of hingedly supported platens in printing position with a plurality of sets of type carrying type bars, said type bars being arranged for unitary movements for making like impressions on the platens, said platens being adjustable in a path to receive im-' pressions of the type bars at various positions thereon, means retaining the platens in their adjusted positions, movable means bodily supporting the platens in their adjusted positions, lock means on the movable means retaining the same at predetermined positions for bodily adjusting the platens longitudinally with respect to the type bars, and releasable lock. means for bodily swinging the hingedly supported platens on their hinges to permit visibility thereto.
15. In a machine ofthe character described,
the combination with a movable supporting frame 5 ,the main carriage, a platen carried on each of the independently movable carriages, a set of type bars for each of the platens, said type bars being arranged in pairs for movement with each 20 other and adapted to coact with each of the platens, releasable retaining means coacting with the carriages of each of the platens and permitting of their longitudinal adjustments, and manually' controlled lock means for adjusting the 25 main carriage to bodily adjust the platens with respect ,to the type bars.
17. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a main carriage supporting a plurality of independently movable car- 30 riages, a platen carried on each of the independently movable carriages and each having a set of type bars coacting therewith, said type. bars being connected for simultaneous movementsand for an impact with their respective 35 platens, adjustable retaining means for the main carriage to bodily position the independently movable carriages and their platens with respect to each set of type bars, said independently movable carriages being also supported for a unitary 40 swinging: movement on the main carriage, and manually controlled lock and grip means for eilectingvaswinging movement of the movable carriages rendering the platens carried thereon visible to the operator. 45

The combination with a movable supporting frame having a carrying frame hingedly supported for swinging movements thereon, platens on the carrying frame, said platens being normally retained in printing position with a set of 9 type carrying type barsthat coact therewith, said platens being movable for independent adjustments on-the carrying frame, and releasable lock means for releasing the carrying frame for a swinging movement thereof and said platens-with respect to the movable supporting frame.
19. In an adding machine, the combination' with a main carriage, of a plurality of independently movablecarriages supported thereon, a of platens carried on eachof said independently movable carriages, a set of type bars for each of the platens, each being 'connected formovements one with the other for simultaneously imprintin movements with and independently or the carriage means, and a set of type carrying type'bars connected in pairs for simultaneous and duplicate impressions on each of the platens.
22. In combination with the carriage of an adding machine having a pair oi. platens carried for longitudinal adjustments thereon, said platens being arranged to swing bodily on the carriage providing visibility for their longitudinal adjustments, and lock means adapted to be controlled for securing the platens in operative and inoperative positions with respect to their swinging movements on the adding machine.
