Abstract

A suppressor is provided for use with a multitude of ammunition calibers. The Suppressor comprises an outer tube and an inner frame which is closely received in the outer tube defining a primary axis. The inner frame defines a plurality of lateral lineal channels which are each oriented perpendicular to the primary axis. Further, the inner frame defines a plurality of baffles which are adapted to be received in the linear channels.

Description

    CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS
  • This application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 62/683,072 filed on Jun. 11, 2018, entitled “Multi-Caliber Firearm Suppressor”, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety for all that is taught and disclosed therein.
  • FIELD OF THE INVENTION
  • The present invention relates to a firearm suppressor, and more particularly, to a suppressor for a firearm wherein a singular suppressor utilizing a modular baffle system will allow for effective use with a multitude of ammunition calibers.
  • BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
  • Firearm suppressors or silencers greatly reduce the audible report from the explosion that occurs when discharging a firearm cartridge. It also suppresses the muzzle flash associated with burning gunpowder exiting the barrel of the firearm. Because suppressors allow the user to operate firearms without the need for hearing protection, they have become very popular for use in military, law enforcement and civilian applications.
  • Suppressors would be even more popular for civilian use if not for the expense associated with acquiring them. Not only are they costly to produce, therefore demanding a high price, the legal requirements as outlined by the National Firearms Act (NFA) adds financial burden, additional documentation and a long waiting period for Federal approval. To obtain a single suppressor one must complete ATF forms and pay for a $200 tax stamp. Since most suppressors are designed for specific ammunition calibers or caliber classes (i.e. 30 caliber may accommodate .308, 30-06, 300 Win Mag etc.), multiple suppressors would be required if say an individual wanted one for a 45 cal. pistol, a 5.56 carbine and a 30 cal. rifle. There are a few suppressors on the market that claim to be universal or multi-caliber. This means that they default to the largest bore size for the caliber range knowing that all smaller caliber projectiles will be able to pass through it. However, this is much less than desirable. If one fires a relatively small caliber cartridge using a larger caliber suppressor, the otherwise unneeded suppressor bore diameter becomes quite inefficient at performing its primary function, suppressing noise. The excess bore diameter will allow for hot gases and sound waves to escape faster in the excess space between the fired projectile and the interior baffles. This is why caliber class sized suppressors are more effective and therefore desirable.
  • Because the NFA dictates that all suppressor parts are subject to the regulations, spare parts such as baffles are tightly controlled. Therefore, buying additional baffles in other calibers to interchange in a suppressor cannot be done without the aforementioned licensing process and expense.
  • The limitations of the prior art are addressed by providing a suppressor for use with a multitude of ammunition calibers.
  • SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
  • Concepts and technologies in this application relate to a suppressor for a firearm wherein a singular suppressor utilizing a modular baffle system will allow for effective use with a multitude of ammunition calibers. This concept is shown in the embodiments herein by using a removable baffle core bracket and providing different caliber class baffles with the initial purchase of the suppressor. For the majority of users both civilian and law enforcement, three caliber classes will be suitable. The caliber classes illustrated here are .17-.224, .243-.300 and .40-.458. However, the concepts illustrated here are valid for any range of caliber classes. Because the baffle core bracket will hold all baffles included there are no “extra parts”, making it compliant with NFA rules.

  • DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
  • FIG. 1 is an exploded view of all components of the suppressor. Outer tube, muzzle end cap, Removable Baffle Core, baffles, threaded muzzle brake attachment end cap. Note the upper and lower edges of baffles are straight for fitment in Removable Core Bracket.
