Patented Oct. 22, 1935 UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE Application March 15, 1934, Serial No. 715,755 Renewed August 28, 1935 1 Claim.
This invention relates to an automobile wheel, the general object of the invention being to provide means for locking the wheel to its brake drum in such a manner that the wheel can be 5 quickly removed and replaced.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:-
Figure 1 is a View looking toward the outer face of a wheel constructed in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is an elevation of the parts carried by the wheel hub, with a portion of the spindle in section.
Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Figure 2.v Figure 4 is a section on line 4 4 of Figure 2. Figure 5 is a View of one of the studs carried by the brake drum.
Figure 6 is a section on line 6--6 of Figure 2. Figure '7 is a view looking toward the threaded end of the stud shown in Figure 5. Figure 8 is a detail edge view showing the tapered part of the plate, showing in dotted lines a head of a stud.
Figure 9 is a View of the locking means and a part of the handle. Figure 10 is a sectional view through the locking means.
In these drawings, the letter A indicates a portion of the brake drum which carries the hub a for receiving portion of the spindle. The wheel 40 is shown at B and its hub at b. This hub b is formed with an opening I in its front end which is adapted to be' covered by any suitable form of cap 2 and the inner end of the hub is closed by a plate 3 which contacts the outer face of the drum and a ring-shaped plate 4 is connected to the plate 3 by the studs 5 provided with heads and attached to the plate 3 and operating in arcuate slots 6 in the plate 4 so that a limited turning movement of the plate 4 on the plate 3 is permitted. The plate 4 is provided with a plurality of projections 1, each of which carries a keyhole-shaped slot 8 and the drum carries a plurality of headed studs 9 which pass through these slots 8, the studs also passing through the 55 plate 3 of the hub. These parts are so arranged that when the plate 4 is turned to a position where the free ends of the slots 6 shown in Figure 2 will engage the studs 5, the large parts of the slots 8 will come into register with the heads of the studs 9 so that the heads of the studs 9 can 5 pass through the enlarged parts of the slots 8, which will permit the wheel to be pulled off -the brake drum. Of course, when the parts are in the position shown in Figure 2, the wheel is locked to the drum by the small parts of the slots 8 enlo gaging the headed studs 9.
A U-shaped member I0 has its bight adjustably fastened to the plate 4 through means of the bolts I I carried by the plate 4 and passing through the slots I2 in the bight and the inner face of the 15 bight and that part of the plate 4 engaged by the bight are roughened, as shown at I3, to prevent slipping when the nuts of the bolts II are tightened. A substantially U-shaped handle I4 has the ends of its limbs bent upwardly, as shown zo at I4 and the extremities of these ends are pivoted to the upper ends of the limbs of the member Ill, as shown at I5, and the bight of this member I 4 carries a lock I 6 for engaging a keeper member I'I attached to the plate 3. Thus by 25 moving the parts to the position shown in Figures 2 and 3, and turning the key I8 in the lock, the handle will be held in the position shown so that the wheel is locked to the brake drum. When it is desired to remove the wheel, the cap 2 is 30 removed, the lock turned to unlocking position by the key I8, and then the handle is swung outwardly to release it from the two angle-shaped stops I9 attached to the plate 3 of the hub and then the handle is turned to rotate the plate 4 so 35 as to bring the enlarged parts of the slots 8 into register with the heads of the studs 9. Then the wheel can be pulled from the drum.
As shown more particularly in Figure 8, the parts 'I of the plate 4 are beveled, as shown at 'I' 40 and the inner faces of the studs 9 are beveled, as shown at 9 in Figure 5, so that as the parts move to locking position, a wedging action is set up which firmly holds the hub of the wheel to the brake drum. The lock I6 and the keeper member 45 I1 can be of any suitable form although the drawings show the keeper member as provided with aprojection which is engaged by a projection in the lock barrel when the barrel is turned to locked position as shown in Fig. 10.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination 2li l and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall Within the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:-
The combination of an inner hub having a radially outwardly extending annular flange, a demountable Wheel having a hub shell from which an annular flange projects radially inwardly, apertures in said last mentioned flange, headed studs xed to said first mentioned flange and projecting through said apertures, a plate rotatably mounted on said last mentioned flange and provided with key hole slots adapted to receive the headed studs, a handle secured to said plate, means to lock said handle to said hub shell flange after said plate has been rotated to position said studs in the smaller ends of said key hole slots to 'secure the demountable wheel to the inner hub, and lugs projecting from the hub shell ange and engaging the handle when the latter is in locking position for preventing rotary movement of the handle in a planeparallel to the median 10 plane of the wheel.
