FIG. 6 is a cross-sectional view of an embodiment of the disclosure taken along line 6-6 ofFIG. 3 . -
FIG. 7 is a partial cut-away front view of an embodiment of the disclosure. - With reference now to the drawings, and in particular to
FIGS. 1 through 7 thereof, a new primer installation device embodying the principles and concepts of an embodiment of the disclosure and generally designated by thereference numeral 10 will be described. - As best illustrated in
FIGS. 1 through 7 , theprimer installation device 10 generally comprises ahousing 12 defining aram chamber 14 having anupper lip 16. Aram rod 18 is coupled to thehousing 12 by being positioned in theram chamber 14. Theram rod 18 abuts theupper lip 16 when theram rod 18 is fully elevated within theram chamber 14. Aram rotor 20 is coupled to thehousing 12. Theram rotor 20 engages theram rod 18 defining a rack and pinion mechanism such that rotation of theram rotor 20 elevates theram rod 18 within theram chamber 14. Thehousing 12 may be attached to abase plate 76 configured for coupling to a support structure. - The
ram rotor 20 has a pair ofend sections 22. Each of theend sections 22 of theram rotor 20 extends from arespective side 24 of thehousing 12. Ahandle 26 is coupled to theram rotor 20 such that manipulation of thehandle 26 rotates theram rotor 20. Thehandle 26 is removably coupled to a selectable one of theend sections 22 of theram rotor 20 allowing thehandle 26 to be positioned on eitherside 24 of thehousing 12 to accommodate use of thehandle 26 by the right hand or left hand of a user. Thehandle 26 is attached to theram rotor 20 using threading or another conventional removable connection. - An
elevator 30 is coupled to thehousing 12 in vertical alignment with theram chamber 14. A position of theelevator 30 is adjustable relative to thehousing 12 as described in more detail below. Aslot 32 extends into theelevator 30. Theelevator 30 has a threadedportion 34. Awheel 36 has a threadedsurface 38 complementary to and engaging the threadedportion 34 of theelevator 30. Thewheel 36 is coupled to thehousing 12 such that thewheel 36 is rotatable within a fixed position in thehousing 12. Theslot 32 in theelevator 30 is generally engaged to prevent rotation of theelevator 30 within thehousing 12. Thus, rotation of thewheel 36 moves the elevator up and down in thehousing 12 and adjusts a position of theelevator 30 relative to theupper lip 16. - An
outer surface 38 of thewheel 36 is structured to comprise a plurality ofdetents 40. Thedetents 40 are evenly spaced around theouter surface 38 of thewheel 36 wherein thedetents 40 define a plurality ofincremental stops 42 around thewheel 36. Spacing of thedetents 40 is correlated to correspond to the threadedportion 34 of theelevator 30 such that rotation of thewheel 36 betweenadjacent stops 42 moves the elevator 30 a distance between 0.5 and 2.0 thousandths of a inch relative to theupper lip 16. A ball bearing 44 is positioned in thehousing 12 and positioned to engage each detent 40 as thewheel 36 is rotated such that engagement of the ball bearing 44 to eachdetent 40 provides resistance to rotation of thewheel 36. Abiasing member 46 is coupled to thehousing 12 urging the ball bearing 44 into contact with theouter surface 38 of thewheel 36. Ascrew 48 is coupled to thehousing 12. Thebiasing member 46 is positioned between thescrew 48 and the ball bearing 44 such that manipulation of thescrew 48 selectively compresses and decompresses thebiasing member 46 between the ball bearing 44 and thescrew 48. Thus, pressure exerted on thewheel 36 by the ball bearing 44 is adjustable by manipulation of thescrew 48. Sufficient tightening of thescrew 48 provides for resistance to prevent rotation of thewheel 36 relative to thehousing 12, fixing the position of theelevator 30 relative to theupper lip 16. - A
shell holder 50 of conventional design is coupled to theelevator 30 such that theshell holder 50 is held in a fixed position relative to theelevator 30 as theram rod 18 is actuated. Aloading pin 52 rests on theram rod 18 such that theloading pin 52 is operationally coupled to theram rod 18. Operation of theram rod 18 extends theloading pin 52 through theelevator 30 and theshell holder 50 such that theloading pin 52 is configured for installing aprimer 54 into ashell 56 positioned in theshell holder 50. Full extension of theloading pin 52 is determined by physical obstruction of operation of theram rod 18 within theram chamber 14 providing precise repeatable positioning of theloading pin 52, and thus theprimer 54, relative to theshell 56 in theshell holder 50. Abushing 58 is positioned in aconduit 60 extending through theelevator 30. Theloading pin 52 extends through theconduit 60 such that thebushing 58 centers theloading pin 52 within theconduit 60. - The
loading pin 52 may be one of a plurality ofloading pins 52 with eachloading pin 52 having a unique diameter transverse to a longitudinal axis of theloading pin 52 corresponding to loading ofprimers 54 corresponding to various sizes ofshells 56. Thebushing 58 is one of a plurality ofbushings 58. A size of acentral opening 62 of eachbushing 58 corresponds to a respective one of theloading pins 52. - A
shuttle bed 64 is coupled to and extends through thehousing 12. Theshuttle bed 64 defines aseat 66 aligned with theloading pin 52. Theseat 66 is configured for receiving theprimer 54 such that theprimer 54 is aligned with theloading pin 52. Theloading pin 52 is extended through theshuttle bed 64 when theram rod 18 is extended. Thus, theloading pin 52 is configured to urge theprimer 54 positioned in theseat 66 into theshell 56 positioned in theshell holder 50. Theshuttle bed 64 extends through thehousing 12 and into theslot 32 in theelevator 30 wherein theshuttle bed 64 prevents rotation of theelevator 30 within thehousing 12. Theshuttle bed 64 may also be one of a plurality ofshuttle beds 64 interchangeably couplable to thehousing 12 with eachshuttle bed 64 being configured to correspond to a respective one of the loading pins 52 for a particular size ofshell 56. Achute 68 is coupled to thehousing 12. Thechute 68 may be incorporated into ablock 70 coupled to thehousing 12. Thechute 68 has a dispensingopening 72 aligned with theshuttle bed 64 wherein thechute 68 is configured for delivering theprimer 54 to theshuttle bed 64 spaced from theseat 66. Aslide 74 is coupled to theshuttle bed 64. Theslide 74 is movable along theshuttle bed 64 such that theslide 74 is configured to move theprimer 54 along theshuttle bed 64 to theseat 66. Theslide 74 may be biased such that theslide 74 is urged away from theseat 66 until manipulated. Thechute 68 is transversely oriented relative to theshuttle bed 64 wherein thechute 68 is configured to receive atube 78 of vertically stackedprimers 54 such that theprimers 54 are sequentially dispensed onto theshuttle bed 64 with each manipulation of theslide 74. - In use, the
device 10 is assembled using the desired size ofloading pin 52,shuttle bed 64,bushing 58,shell holder 50, and other components which may correspond to a particular size of ammunition. Thewheel 36 is rotated to a desired position corresponding to a precise positioning of theshell holder 50 relative to theupper lip 16 within thehousing 12. Ashell 56 is engaged to theshell holder 50 and aprimer 54 is positioned in theseat 66 by manipulation of theslide 74. Thehandle 26 is manipulated to move theram rod 18 until theram rod 18 abuts theupper lip 16. Theprimer 54 is driven into theshell 56 until theram rod 18 against theupper lip 16. Theshell 56 is now primed and removed from theshell holder 50. Anew shell 56 is loaded and the process repeated with eachprimer 54 being driven to a precise, adjustable, consistent position in therespective shell 56. - With respect to the above description then, it is to be realized that the optimum dimensional relationships for the parts of an embodiment enabled by the disclosure, to include variations in size, materials, shape, form, function and manner of operation, assembly and use, are deemed readily apparent and obvious to one skilled in the art, and all equivalent relationships to those illustrated in the drawings and described in the specification are intended to be encompassed by an embodiment of the disclosure.
- Therefore, the foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the disclosure. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the disclosure to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the disclosure. In this patent document, the word “comprising” is used in its non-limiting sense to mean that items following the word are included, but items not specifically mentioned are not excluded. A reference to an element by the indefinite article “a” does not exclude the possibility that more than one of the element is present, unless the context clearly requires that there be only one of the elements.
