VISBLE INDEX CARD HOLDER Filed DSC. 15, 1952 BY l Patented Sept. 24, 1935 n 2,015,519 VISIBLE nmEx om HOLDER,
nonna A. Furlong, menester, N. Y., signor to The Yawman & Erbe Manufacturing Company, Rochester, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application December 15, 1932, Serial No. 647,325
1Claim.
The present invention relates to visible index card holders and embodies, more specifically, an improved card holder for visible indexes by means of which a card may be conveniently inserted, re-
5 tained and removed from the holder.
Holders for cards for indexes of this character are now available having pockets along the bottoms thereof the tops of the holders being formed with slots to receive the upper corners of the cards. The operation of inserting the corners of the cards into those slots is not only an inconvenient one but the corners of the cards, as well as the edges of the slots themselves frequently suffer from careless handling during these operations. In as much as the top corners o f the cards must be inserted into the slots to assure the maintenance of a full visible line at the bottom of .the card the position of the slots and size of the cards frequently gives rise to inaccurate fitting.
An object of the present invention is to provide a card holder for visible indexes which is formed in such fashion that a card'may be conveniently inserted and retained thereby.
A further object of the invention is to provide a card holder which reduces the number of operations required to position a card therein.
A further object of the invention is to provide a card holder having a retaining means thereon which not only facilitates the insertion of a card into the holder but also enables the card to be eiectively retained within the holder.
Further objects, not specifically enumerated above, will be apparent as the invention is de scribed in greater detail in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a card holder constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a view in end elevation, showing the card holder and card of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a view in section, taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1 and looking in the direction of the same properly within the recess and maintain they same in position. With reference to the accompanying drawing, a card for a visible index system is shown at I and may have suitable indicia (Cl. 12S-18.7)
inscribed thereon adjacent the bottom edge thereof, as indicated at Il. 'I'he card is adapted to be received within a holder I2 which is formed, adjacent the bottom thereof, with a pocket or recess I3. In the form of invention illustrated herein, 5 the pocket is shown as being formed by a flap Il which forms a continuation of the holder I2 and is turned back and secured by rivets I5 adjacent the sides thereof.
The ap Il may either be of opaque or transparent material or it may have a window formed therein in order that the indicia upon the portion of the card within the pocket may be viewed without removing the card from the holder. In. the form of the invention shown in Figure 1, the card holder I2 and iiap I4 are opaque and formed with a window Ii which may be cut out from the flap.
The holder I2 is provided with a top flatl I1 which overlies the upper portion of the holder and is adapted to retain the top of the card within the holder. In order that the top flap may normally lie in the position shown in the drawing, card holder hinges I8 are secured thereto in the fashion shown in Figures 2 and 3. By forming 25 the hinges with overlying portions I9 which are secured together at-ZII and securing the portions I9 in straddled relationship over the upper fold of the card holder, the hinges serve as a means to hold the top ap yieldingly in a normal position such as shown in Figures 2 and 3.
The construction shown in Figure 4 .illustrates a holder constructed in accordancewith the present invention wherein the pocket is not formed with a window as illustrated in Figure 1. vWhile the invention has been illustrated as being formed from a single piece of material, it will be apparent that it may be fabricated in any desired fashion, it being essential only that the holder have a bottom retaining means and a top securing member which folds down over the top edge of the cards. Such construction minimizes the number of motions required to insert a card thereinto and the top flap serves as a means for conveniently camming the card into the pocket and retaining the same in proper position therein.
While the invention has been described with specific reference to the accompanying drawing, it is not to be limited, save as dened in the appended claim.
I claim as my invention:
An index card holder for receiving and exposing a major portion of at least one face, of an index card comprising a at card forming a base member, a shallow pocket formed at one edge of 55 said base member by a strip attached at said edge of said base member and along two adjacent sides to form a. pocket closed on three sides for re- -ceiving and holding an index card against dis- 5 placement except in one direction, flexible hinge members attached to the base member at the edge opposite the'said pocket to support the index card holder, and a narrow hinged ap attached to the base member and to the hinge members at; the hinged edge to cover only an edge of an index card and hold said index card in place but permit ready removal by raising the hinged flap.
